Each character has access to skills that have so many different, potent combinations with other skills or other character builds, and that's not even getting into the hundreds of Pictos you can augment your setups with. For the most part, you can get through the main story and most optional bosses on normal mode without bothering to optimise builds, though some late-game foes will put this strategy to the test. Expedition 33's Expert mode is another matter entirely, though. Enemies frequently one-shot you there, and you'll need to stack the deck in your favour as often as possible.
