Gears Of War: E-Day Is Bigger, Bloodier, And More Ambitious Than We Expected

Gears of War: E-Day(https://www.gamespot.com/games/gears-of-war-e-day/) made a big splash during the Xbox Games Showcase, as The Coalition dropped an action-packed preview on audiences. Not only is Gears looking better than ever, thanks to Unreal Engine 5 powering it, but several design choices are also adding up to make the game play better through fluid movement mechanics and levels that'll give you opportunities to put your skills to the test. GameSpot had the opportunity to take a closer look at the game and sit down with The Coalition's developers to learn more about the prequel. You can check out everything new that we learned from this interview that wasn't shown off in the initial preview in the video below. https://youtu.be/hh5Swf5p4jo Gears of War: E-Day is a fresh start for the franchise, and according to The Coalition, the developer started with an "empty hard drive" to rebuild Gears in Unreal Engine 5. The key location for E-Day is Kalona on the planet Sera, a city that will be devastated during Emergence Day when the Locust rise up to attack humanity. The Coalition says that the destruction will be felt throughout the campaign as environments change, and while E-Day isn't an open-world game, its large-scale arenas are combat puzzles waiting for players to solve them through smoother cover transitions(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/gears-of-war-e-day-is-drastically-changing-movement-for-the-first-time-in-the-series/) and ultraviolence. Some missions will have tighter spaces to fight in, while others will give players access to entire neighborhoods to wage war in. The main goal is to make players feel like they're in a big-budget action movie as they slide and mantle over obstacles so that they can flank enemies. Other interesting tidbits from our time with The Coalition include the studio mentioning that E-Day has the longest campaign that it has ever designed--with the studio estimating that it'll take around 14 hours to complete--how E-Day was the story(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/gears-of-war-e-day-happened-because-starting-over-sounded-more-fun-than-gears-6/) the studio wanted to tell next, and owners of PC gaming handhelds should expect to see it run just fine on those systems. Gears of War: E-Day launches for PC and Xbox Series X|S on October 3, but it’s not coming to PS5(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/gears-of-war-e-day-ps5-version-canceled-report-says/).

Kingdom Hearts IV Gameplay Trailer Revealed, Will Launch Simultaneously On Consoles And PC

!Kingdom Hearts IV(https://www.gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/bodydefault/public/2026/06/09/155adcf5/kh404.jpg.webp) The last time we got a trailer for Kingdom Hearts IV was in 2022(https://www.gameinformer.com/2022/04/10/kingdom-hearts-4-revealed-in-20th-anniversary-trailer). In the years since, fans have been clamoring for more information about the highly anticipated sequel, poring through screenshots(https://www.gameinformer.com/2025/05/14/kingdom-hearts-iv-development-update-new-screenshots-released-by-square-enix) and more for any glimmer of new details. Perhaps surprising everyone, Kingdom Hearts IV appeared during today's Nintendo Direct with a new gameplay trailer that also revealed it will launch on Nintendo Switch 2 alongside PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. Unfortunately, this trailer didn't say when that launch will be, so the wait continues. But this new trailer has plenty to look at, including gameplay in modern-day Tokyo, featuring a new look at the game's action combat in Shibuya. In it, we see a more realistic take on Sora fighting off Heartless in the city, and it looks awesome. Check out the new Kingdom Hearts IV teaser trailer for yourself below: Kingdom Hearts IV is currently in development and set to launch on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC. While the Nintendo Direct version of the trailer didn't reveal these additional platforms the game is in development for, the teaser trailer posted on the official Square Enix YouTube channel (the one we've linked above) does, indicating a simultaneous launch. In the meantime, check out the Kingdom Hearts IV reveal trailer(https://www.gameinformer.com/2022/04/10/kingdom-hearts-4-revealed-in-20th-anniversary-trailer).

Xbox Denies That Gears Of War: E-Day Skipping PS5 Was Last-Minute Decision, But No One Believes That

An Xbox marketing boss has denied that Gears of War: E-Day skipping PlayStation 5 was a last-minute decision despite fans discovering what they believe is overwhelming evidence that it was. After it was discovered that Microsoft hastily removed a recent video showing a PS5 logo for Gears of War: E-Day (see below), marketing boss Aaron Greenberg said it is "not true"(https://x.com/aarongreenberg/status/2064109955117158455) that Microsoft canceled a PS5 edition of the game at the last minute. "We just limited the knowledge of this news to a very small internal group. Intention was to share this news first with our players and everyone watching showcase," he said. "It is not true that it was a last-minute decision" to have E-Day be an Xbox console exclusive, he added(https://x.com/aarongreenberg/status/2064120050693685388). https://twitter.com/Wario64/status/2064094012600889582 Asked when Microsoft made the call to not bring E-Day to PS5, Greenberg said(https://x.com/aarongreenberg/status/2064129884985975134) he became aware of it "roughly a month in advance," but he didn't clarify any further. On the night before the Xbox Games Showcase, reporter Jeff Grubb said Microsoft had been working on a PS5 edition of E-Day but canceled it(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/gears-of-war-e-day-ps5-version-canceled-report-says/). “Gears of War: E-Day was going to be on PS5–it’s not anymore. That just happened. That’s a decision that just got made," Grubb said on June 6. After the Xbox Games Showcase on June 7 where E-Day was announced as a console exclusive on Xbox, Grubb said(https://bsky.app/profile/did:plc:bdacp2cmuuyawx553cv2spdy/post/3mnps3tzbes2b?refsrc=embed) there is a "basically finished version of Gears for PlayStation sitting on a drive." Retailer listings for a PS5 edition of the game were also discovered, though these can be unreliable. People also thought that E-Day was going to release on PS5 because Microsoft brought Gears of War: Reloaded to PS5 in 2025. It was the first Gears game ever on a PlayStation platform. This may not have been the first time that Microsoft told one of its teams to stop working on a version of a game for Sony's console. Redfall director Harvey Smith said in an interview in 2023, following Microsoft's buyout of Bethesda, that Microsoft told him "No PS5."(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/microsoft-says-we-havent-pulled-any-games-from-playstation-amid-redfall-discussion/1100-6512629/) At the time, Microsoft said it had not "pulled" any games from PlayStation(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/microsoft-says-we-havent-pulled-any-games-from-playstation-amid-redfall-discussion/1100-6512629/), but it did not deny what Smith had said or that it had canceled a Redfall PS5 edition. E-Day and Clockwork Revolution are two of Microsoft's upcoming Xbox console exclusives, and more are coming as part of Xbox CEO Asha Sharma's efforts to "reset" the Xbox business and convince people to buy an Xbox.(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/is-xbox-fixable/) E-Day and Clockwork Revolution are not timed exclusives for Xbox on console, Microsoft has said, suggesting they will never come to PS5. At the same time, Greenberg said in 2021(https://x.com/aarongreenberg/status/1432466477945294849) that Starfield was not a timed exclusive on Xbox ... and then it came to PS5, so it was indeed a timed exclusive. During the Microsoft vs. FTC court case to help get Microsoft's blockbuster deal for Activision Blizzard across the line, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella discussed why he is so against exclusives on consoles(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/microsoft-ceo-says-he-would-love-to-get-rid-of-xbox-exclusives-but-cant-because-of-sony/1100-6515563/). "If it was up to me I would love to get rid of the entire exclusives on consoles, but that’s not for me to define especially as a low-share player in the console market. The dominant player there Sony has defined market competition using exclusives, so that’s the world we live in. I have no love for that world." Things are different now. Microsoft is taking a case-by-case approach to exclusivity, as Halo: Campaign Evolved and the Fable reboot are still coming to PS5, and other games will as well. Under Xbox's previous leadership, including Phil Spencer and Sarah Bond, Microsoft began to release more of its games across competing platforms in an effort to reach more people, and make more money. The plan seemed to have worked, at least in some cases, as Forza Horizon 5 alone made more than $300 million on PS5(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/this-xbox-game-just-passed-300-million-in-revenue-on-ps5-report-says/1100-6537323/). Xbox's new chief strategy officer, Matthew Ball, recently discussed how Xbox--as a brand and a business--"languished"(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/is-xbox-fixable/) under Spencer and Bond.
