Xbox Game Pass lost 'millions' of players due to price hikes, reveals Microsoft

Overview & Key Takeaways

Xbox executive Matthew Ball said Xbox Game Pass lost a fair amount of subscribers over the past eight months.

Xbox substantially raised Game Pass prices in October 2025, a price hike that cost Microsoft millions of players, according to Xbox chief strategy officer Matthew Ball. He spoke at Summer Game Fest's The Game Business Live event on Monday and shared insights into the business side of Game Pass.

"We shed millions of subscribers over the span of a few months," Ball said (via GameSpot). Game Pass Ultimate, the highest tier of Game Pass, went from $19.99 to $29.99 per month, and the price change was too much for plenty of players. Xbox Game Pass had over 34 million players as of February 2024, the latest confirmed number, and Xbox hasn't shared the current Game Pass subscriber count.

In the months since the price increase, under new Xbox CEO Asha Sharma, Ball said Xbox has "corrected that offering." Sharma had admitted Game Pass became "too expensive for players" in a memo leaked in April 2026, and later in the month Xbox dropped prices. Now, Game Pass Ultimate costs $22.99 a month โ€” still more expensive than the $19.99 pre-price hike, but much more palatable than the previous $29.99 price. A cheaper, pared-down version was also announced in May as part of Xbox's partnership with Discord.

Xbox is trying to win back players not just with a cheaper Game Pass, but with more exclusive games. After dabbling in releasing its IP on other consoles โ€” hello, Master Chief on PlayStation 5 โ€” Xbox is reevaluating its approach to exclusive games.

"Players can expect a reliable pipeline that validates their historical investment in the Xbox platform, keeps them as Xbox players going forward. And everyone in the industry understands that exclusives are important to the growth and branding of that platform," Ball said at The Game Business Live event (via VGC).

However, after Sunday's Xbox Games Showcase, Xbox's emphasis on exclusive games feels more like a PR stunt for the time being. Time will tell if courting the most hardcore players back with early-2000s console war rhetoric will win back those who fled less than a year ago, let alone the newcomers the company needs to survive generational shift.

An interesting time! At least there are some legitimately good games on Game Pass.

Surprise Xbox Game To Be Announced At Gamescom, Insider Says

Microsoft is gearing up to announce a new game at Gamescom this month, it appears, and it could be from an established series. Insider NateTheHate 2(https://x.com/NateTheHate2/status/2088674549428556273) said, "I've heard of a neat Xbox announcement that should be at Gamescom." He said it will be a "new game in a series" as opposed to a new IP. And no, it's not a new Banjo-Kazooie game, he said(https://x.com/NateTheHate2/status/2089442879185748013). He added that, whatever the project is, it's from a franchise that Microsoft owns(https://x.com/NateTheHate2/status/2089457810501251429), but it's not being made by a studio that Microsoft owns(https://x.com/NateTheHate2/status/2089460969919426888). That leaves open a lot of possibilities, so your guess is as good as anyone's right now as to what it may be and which studio could be behind it. !(https://www.gamespot.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/XboxGamescom.jpg?w=636) Microsoft has an announcement on tap for Gamescom, it seems. That's all we have to go on for now, but with Gamescom coming up soon, we should find out shortly. Xbox is not holding its own dedicated showcase at Gamescom, but it's possible the announcement could come during Geoff Keighley's Opening Night Live on August 25. The Xbox booth at Gamescom(https://news.xbox.com/en-us/2026/07/28/xbox-gamescom-2026/) will feature 25 upcoming games, including Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, Fable, Minecraft Dungeons II, Gears of War: E-Day, Metro 2039, Stranger Than Heaven, and Alien: Isolation 2. There will also be live broadcasts from the Xbox booth August 26 and August 27, featuring interviews, guests, gameplay reveals, trailers, "and more." Perhaps one of the interview slots will be about this upcoming mystery game. 2026 is the 25th anniversary of Xbox, and the company has a lot planned(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/xbox-unveils-new-25th-anniversary-edition-xbox-series-x-based-on-original-xbox-and-its-gonna-be-pricey/).
