!Game Informer News(https://www.gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/bodydefault/public/2026/06/23/7282e85f/sea-of-thieves-2026-battle.jpg.webp) Rare's multiplayer pirate adventure Sea of Thieves is getting a live-action film adaptation, and it's part of a larger push by Xbox to bring its franchises to both the big and small screens, Entertainment Weekly(https://ew.com/sea-of-thieves-movie-live-action-xbox-adaptations-exclusive-12003322) reports. The film has no director as of yet, but it is being produced by Destin Daniel Cretton, director of the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day and 2021’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, through his production company, Hisako. Cretton is also the co-creator of the Disney+ series Wonder Man. There’s no word on the film’s plot, but Xbox chief content officer Matt Booty told EW, "The main character of a Sea of Thieves game is actually the player and the community. So if you sit down to think about Sea of Thieves, it's not, Who are the main characters? What's the plot? It's a super social game, but there's a tone to Sea of Thieves. It's built on a very cooperative community, so you can start to sense what that's going to be like." Sea of Thieves launched for Xbox One and PC in 2018 and is a multiplayer pirate adventure with players working together to sail the oceans of an open world to find treasure and battle rival ships and other threats. Although it initially received a tepid reception(https://gameinformer.com/games/seaofthieves/b/xboxone/archive/2018/03/23/game-informer-sea-of-thieves-xbox-one-review.aspx), years of updates and improvements have increased its popularity. Sea of Thieves jumped to Xbox Series X/S in 2020 and came to PlayStation 5 in 2024. Check out the game's Season 20 trailer from the Xbox Games Showcase earlier this month. The Sea of Thieves movie news is part of EW's larger feature covering Xbox(https://ew.com/xbox-25th-anniversary-hollywood-adaptations-cover-story-exclusive-12003252), which reveals the movie is one of a dozen film/TV adaptations based on Xbox-owned franchises in production. Among them are a sequel to A Minecraft Movie(https://gameinformer.com/2025/10/09/a-minecraft-movie-sequel-confirmed-for-summer-2027), live-action films based on Call of Duty(https://gameinformer.com/2025/10/30/call-of-duty-movie-to-be-directed-by-lone-survivor-deepwater-horizon-director-peter-berg) and Gears of War(https://gameinformer.com/2025/05/16/netflixs-gears-of-war-movie-reportedly-lands-the-fall-guy-bullet-train-director-david), a third season of Amazon’s Fallout (with Aaron Paul joining the cast(https://gameinformer.com/2026/05/11/aaron-paul-will-join-the-cast-of-fallout-season-3-in-mystery-role)), a reality TV show based on Fallout Shelter, a Wolfenstein live-action TV series(https://gameinformer.com/2025/07/25/wolfenstein-tv-series-reportedly-in-development-at-amazon), and an animated Minecraft series by Netflix(https://gameinformer.com/gamer-culture/2024/05/30/netflix-announces-minecraft-animated-series). 🟩 Xbox, Multi-platformHideo Kojima Says Every Publisher Told Him His Idea For OD Was “Crazy”
Game developer Hideo Kojima has shared new details about one of his upcoming games, the horror title OD(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/hideo-kojimas-od-release-date-gameplay-and-everything-we-know/1100-6533769/) that he's making in partnership with Xbox. In addition to calling it "a new game system," he said it includes a feature for people who might get too scared by it. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly(https://ew.com/xbox-25th-anniversary-hollywood-adaptations-cover-story-exclusive-12003252), Kojima said his aim with the game was to "do something new" and "do something different." He said he first came up with the concept for OD when he was making the original Death Stranding years ago. "I can't reveal much detail, but it's something that no one has ever seen before. A new game system," he said. A new image has been released as well. https://twitter.com/KojiPro2015EN/status/2069283202657824878 Kojima went on to say he pitched OD to "many people," including "the big companies" and "the up-and-coming companies." Every company he pitched to told him the same thing. "They said that I'm crazy, and that they really don't understande the concept--that they will not be able to do it," he said. The game was greenlit at Xbox under the leadership of former Xbox boss Phil Spencer. Asha Sharma is now Xbox CEO, and she called OD a "deeply moving game," going on to say it "represents another kind of game." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K7LCmySghGM OD will be a scary game, and that's plainly obvious from seeing the trailer, and it will be a single-player game. Kojima said the aim is to make the game "as scary as possible," but he's also come up with a system for scaredy cats. "For those that might stop playing when it gets too scary, I have thought of a system that will allow them to keep going. I can't say much more, because it'll give too much of a hint on the system, and I could get in trouble for saying too much," he said. Sharma also went on to say that OD is an example of how Xbox has "not reached the boundary of games" just yet. She said one of her goals as Xbox CEO is to make sure Xbox is a platform that is "sufficiently open" to developers of all types, so that "the next Kojima" could potentially have success on Xbox. OD features celebrity actors, including Sophia Lillis, Hunter Schafer, and the late Udo Kier. In addition to OD, Kojima is making the espionage game Phsyint(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/physint-first-look-at-hideo-kojima-new-project-teases-stealth-and-feelings/1100-6534932/) for Sony.

🟩 Xbox, Multi-platformDeath Stranding Movie Is A “Two-Hour Art Movie,” Kojima Says, Admitting It Might Not Work
Hideo Kojima has shared new insight into the Death Stranding movie, while director Michael Sarnoski has revealed a key detail about it as well. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly(https://ew.com/xbox-25th-anniversary-hollywood-adaptations-cover-story-exclusive-12003252), Kojima said he wanted to "try a different path" with the adaptation of Death Stranding for film. That path, he said, is to make a "two-hour art movie" as opposed to re-telling the story of the games. Kojima admitted this plan might not work. "I don't know if this will be successful, but that's the goal," he said. The Death Stranding movie is in the works at A24, which just reached an AI-training deal with Google,(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/elden-ring-death-stranding-movie-studio-gets-75-million-from-google-for-ai-research-report-says/) and is also behind the Elden Ring film from director Alex Garland. Sarnoski, who earned acclaim for directing the movie Pig starring Nicolas Cage and later made A Quiet Place: Day One, told The Hollywood Reporter(https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-features/death-of-robin-hood-michael-sarnoski-1236625837/) that Death Stranding is his next project. Sarnoski, who is also writing the script, said he's still working on the script, but he's confirmed it's the next movie he'll direct "for sure." Sarnoski's latest project was The Death of Robin Hood, which stars Hugh Jackman as Robin Hood and released on June 19. The Death Stranding movie doesn't have a cast, release date, or any other concrete information yet. However, Sarnoski previously talked about how the film will feature characters not seen in the game, but with the overall aim of "keeping it honest to the game." Kojima himself was approached to direct the Death Stranding movie(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/death-stranding-movie-could-have-been-directed-by-kojima-himself/1100-6534300/), but he declined. Kojima won’t be “involved too much” because if he were, he said he would “start saying a lot of things.” Kojima is also working on a new game for Xbox called OD, and a new screenshot was shared in the Entertainment Weekly story linked above.
🟩 Xbox, Multi-platformTodd Howard On The Elder Scrolls 6: “We Need To Get It Right”
The Elder Scrolls 6 is one of Xbox's most-anticipated upcoming games, and game director Todd Howard has now said the studio must stick the landing. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly(https://ew.com/xbox-25th-anniversary-hollywood-adaptations-cover-story-exclusive-12003252), Howard confirmed that the majority of the developers at Bethesda Game Studios are working on The Elder Scrolls 6 currently. "We know we need to get it right and it's been a long time," he said. Indeed it has been a long time. The game was announced more than eight years ago now(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/elder-scrolls-6-was-announced-8-years-ago-today-heres-why-it-didnt-show-up-at-xbox-showcase/), and to date, only one video has been released, and it was only a title reveal. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OkFdqqyI8y4 The game did not show up at the Xbox Games Showcase earlier in June. Xbox chief content officer Matt Booty said this was because Microsoft was waiting for "the right moment"(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/elder-scrolls-6-was-announced-8-years-ago-today-heres-why-it-didnt-show-up-at-xbox-showcase/) to show the game again. "When you decide to show it, you want it to be the best you’ve got,” he said. “And also that when you show the game, you’re also giving them a promise of, 'Hey, it’s coming soon.'” Howard has questioned whether it was the right call(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/todd-howard-talks-elder-scrolls-6-and-retirement-i-want-to-do-it-forever/1100-6517168/) to announce The Elder Scrolls 6 so early. “I have asked myself that a lot,” he said. “I don’t know. I probably would’ve announced it more casually.” He later said announcing The Elder Scrolls 6 in the way that Bethesda did was “not my preference,”(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/todd-howard-on-elder-scrolls-6-just-pretend-we-didnt-announce-it-it-doesnt-exist/1100-6538842/) but it happened anyway. He went on to joke: “Just pretend we didn’t announce it. It doesn’t exist. No one has heard a word.”
🎮 PlayStation, Xbox, Multi-platformHalo Fans Can Relax: Campaign Evolved Won’t Require PS Plus For Split-Screen
Halo: Campaign Evolved(https://www.gamespot.com/games/halo-campaign-evolved/) lands on PC and Xbox Series X|S next month, and for the first time, on a PlayStation console. Ahead of its launch, some confusion has arisen regarding how local split-screen co-op will work on PS5, with many assuming that PS Plus subscriptions would be required for both players. Fortunately, there is some good news as Microsoft has clarified what will be required from players exactly. In an update, the official Halo Studios social media channel(https://x.com/halo/status/2068499211868643333) clarified that while local splitscreen co-op does require a PlayStation account for each player, it does not require two PlayStation Plus accounts to function. Originally, senior community manager John Junyszek claimed in a community Q&A that both accounts would each need a PlayStation Plus account and be linked to a Microsoft account. "If you're playing split-screen on PlayStation 5, both accounts will need to have PlayStation Plus and be linked to a Microsoft account," Junyszek wrote at the time. "Having these active PlayStation Plus subscriptions will also provide access to online co-op play." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WwqeSUMEIY Naturally, PS5 players weren't too pleased with this statement, believing that it would cost extra on top of Halo: Campaign Evolved's $50 price tag to join a friend for some couch co-op. As for the Microsoft account requirement, this will allow for cross-progression across PC and consoles. PC and Xbox owners will only need to create a Microsoft account for local co-op. Halo: Campaign Evolved will be released on July 28, and Microsoft has already revealed the global launch times(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/halo-campaign-evolved-release-date-and-global-launch-times-revealed/) more than a month in advance for the game. A complete remake of the very first Halo, the game celebrates the 25th anniversary of the franchise and includes extra content, like improved graphics, new prequel missions, and quality-of-life updates. If you're planning on hopping in, you can check out GameSpot's Halo: Campaign Evolved buying guide(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/halo-campaign-evolved-release-date-and-global-launch-times-revealed/Campaign%20Evolved%20buying%20guide) and read up on how the game looks great in third-person(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/halo-1-remake-lets-you-play-in-third-person-and-it-looks-great/).
