Game Informer News

Rare's multiplayer pirate adventure Sea of Thieves is getting a live-action film adaptation, and it's part of a larger push by Xbox to bring its franchises to both the big and small screens, Entertainment Weekly reports.

The film has no director as of yet, but it is being produced by Destin Daniel Cretton, director of the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day and 2021’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, through his production company, Hisako. Cretton is also the co-creator of the Disney+ series Wonder Man.

There’s no word on the film’s plot, but Xbox chief content officer Matt Booty told EW, "The main character of a Sea of Thieves game is actually the player and the community. So if you sit down to think about Sea of Thieves, it's not, Who are the main characters? What's the plot? It's a super social game, but there's a tone to Sea of Thieves. It's built on a very cooperative community, so you can start to sense what that's going to be like."

Sea of Thieves launched for Xbox One and PC in 2018 and is a multiplayer pirate adventure with players working together to sail the oceans of an open world to find treasure and battle rival ships and other threats. Although it initially received a tepid reception, years of updates and improvements have increased its popularity. Sea of Thieves jumped to Xbox Series X/S in 2020 and came to PlayStation 5 in 2024. Check out the game's Season 20 trailer from the Xbox Games Showcase earlier this month.

The Sea of Thieves movie news is part of *EW'*s larger feature covering Xbox, which reveals the movie is one of a dozen film/TV adaptations based on Xbox-owned franchises in production. Among them are a sequel to A Minecraft Movie, live-action films based on Call of Duty and Gears of War, a third season of Amazon’s Fallout (with Aaron Paul joining the cast), a reality TV show based on Fallout Shelter, a Wolfenstein live-action TV series, and an animated Minecraft series by Netflix.

For more on Sea of Thieves, check out our 2024 retrospective documenting the game's development and evolution. Xbox has been in the news recently, largely due to reports of an incoming wave of mass layoffs and potential studio closures for Compulsion Games, Double Fine, and Ninja Theory. You can listen to us discuss this story in our latest episode of The Game Informer Show podcast.

Xbox Game Pass Is Losing The Witcher 3 And Several More Games In August

Another batch of Xbox Game Pass titles are on their way out at the end of the month, and it looks like the service will be losing some cool, cute, and critically acclaimed games. At the same time, you can check out several games coming to Game Pass in August(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/xbox-game-pass-reveals-its-next-wave-of-august-2026-games/) as part of its second wave of new releases. Listed on the "Leaving Soon" tab on the Xbox mobile app, the list includes the following five games exiting the subscription service on August 31: Another Crab's Treasure, I Am Your Beast, Neon Abyss, One Lonely Outpost, and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Complete Edition(https://www.gamespot.com/games/the-witcher-3-wild-hunt/). As usual, you can save 20% on these games if you decide to buy them before they leave Game Pass. Another Crab's Treasure is a cute take on the souls-like genre, I Am Your Beast plays like a first-person version of Hotline Miami, and Neon Abyss is a slick, action-packed 2D roguelike platformer. The biggest departure here is The Witcher 3, as Game Pass subscribers will be losing access to CD Projekt Red's open-world masterpiece set in a world of swords and sorcery. The good news is that the game usually retails for a pretty low price, so if you're in the middle of a quest, it's worth picking up, especially when you can score a sizable discount on it. Microsoft typically adds and removes games from Game Pass in two waves per month. Earlier this month, Game Pass saw four games(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/xbox-game-pass-loses-this-perfect-organism-and-three-more-games-in-august/) wave goodbye, but the library was bolstered(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/xbox-game-pass-reveals-first-wave-of-august-2026-games/) with new arrivals like Beast of Reincarnation and access to the Gears of War: E-Day beta. We've also gotten confirmation from Xbox that NBA 2K26(https://www.gamespot.com/games/nba-2k26/) will be leaving Xbox Game Pass on September 6.
