6668 articlesAtari And Universal Sign Deal For The Rights To Adapt 10 Classic Games Like Pong And Breakout Into Films
!Game Informer News(https://www.gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/bodydefault/public/2026/07/24/38a8da75/Atari%20Logo.jpg.webp) Over the past few years, video game adaptations have gone from "almost always bad" to "sometimes pretty good," so it's no surprise that more and more of gaming's biggest (and oldest) companies are looking to turn their digital properties into box office hits. According to Deadline(https://deadline.com/2026/07/atari-universal-deal-10-game-ip-script-matt-reilly-carl-hampe-entertainment-360-1237001656/), the latest instance of this comes from Atari (partnering with production company Entertainment 360), which just signed a deal with Universal Pictures to adapt ten of its most iconic games into film adaptations. Those games are: - Asteroids - Adventure - Beserk - Breakout - Centipede - Crystal Castles - Millipede - Missile Command - Pong - Yars' Revenge The first screenplay will come from a duo of writers, Matt Reilly and Carl Hampe, both of whom will also produce said picture. Reilly reportedly penned a spec script that kicked off the whole Atari/Universal negotiation process. Entertainment 360's Guymon Casady, who will also be a producer on the film, said, "The best Atari games dropped you into a world and let your imagination do the rest. Carl and Matt saw an opportunity to take that same spirit and build an original, large-scale adventure around it. From the moment we read the screenplay, we believed there was a great movie here.” Reilly is best known as a studio executive, working in leadership roles at Warner Brothers and 20th Century Fox, though he was most recently the executive vice president at Universal. According to LinkedIn, Reilly is currently president of production and creative at The Arena, a film-producing division of SNK, which Game Informer readers will most likely recognize as the company behind games like Fatal Fury and King of Fighters. SNK has also been scrutinized in recent years due to its acquisition by the Saudi government-owned Electronic Gaming Development Company. Meanwhile, Hampe is better known as a producer and production supervisor, working on films like 2019's Hellboy, Jungle Cruise, and most recently, 65. Neither Reilly nor Hampe seem to have prominent writing credits. While Atari has been out of the console game for quite a while now, it's still around in the modern scene, publishing games like Bubsy 4D(https://gameinformer.com/review/bubsy-4d/bobcat-banality) and co-publishing Total Chaos(https://gameinformer.com/review/total-chaos/a-haunting-catharsis). Atari is perhaps best known through its subsidiary, Digital Eclipse, which we recently learned would be releasing retro collections of classic Barbie(https://www.gameinformer.com/sgf-2026/2026/06/06/barbie-rewind-is-a-digital-eclipse-collection-of-16-classic-games-baked-into-a) and Toy Story games(https://www.gameinformer.com/2026/06/02/digital-eclipse-reveals-toy-story-retro-collection-and-toy-story-3-remaster). Phoenix Cyclops Revealed As First DLC Character In Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls At San Diego Comic Con
!Game Informer News(https://www.gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/bodydefault/public/2026/07/24/7a4a6881/marveltokonfightingsouls-year1dlccharacterphoenixcyclopsps5pcgames0-15screenshot.jpg.webp) We're just weeks away from the release of Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls, but developer Arc System Works intends to support the game well past launch, and they demonstrated that yesterday by revealing the game's first DLC character. Phoenix Cyclops is the first character in the game's upcoming wave 1 DLC, and you can check him out in action below. "Phoenix Cyclops" isn't exactly the name of a superhero, to be clear; this is an iteration of X-Men's Cyclops being inhabited by the Phoenix force, a powerful, fiery cosmic entity, and a nod to the character's appearance as a member of the Phoenix Five in the Avengers vs. X-Men comics. The character is voiced in English by Ray Chase, who also plays Cyclops in Marvel Rivals and X-Men '97. "In addition to powerful Optic Blasts and exceptional hand-to-hand combat abilities that define the character, this Cyclops also possesses the Phoenix Force, so expect Scott Summers to bring the heat!" Takeshi Yamanaka, producer of Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls, wrote on the PlayStation blog(https://blog.playstation.com/2026/07/23/phoenix-cyclops-revealed-as-marvel-tokon-fighting-souls-first-year-1-dlc-character/). "We’ll have more to share about how these abilities are incorporated into his gameplay, so please stay tuned for future updates on his fighting style." Phoenix Cyclops is the first of four characters in the Year One DLC pack, which will also include a new stage and a set of result screen character poses. The Year One DLC is also included in the game's ultimate edition, which also includes alternate chromatic colored skins for each character, one skin each for Spider-Man, Storm, Iron Man, Captain America, and Doctor Doom, and cosmetics to be worm in the game's explorable lobby. Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls launches on PS5 and PC on August 6, but if you want to try it out sooner, you can play the free open beta this weekend(https://www.gameinformer.com/2026/07/16/the-open-beta-for-marvel-tokon-fighting-souls-starts-next-week).
🎮 PlayStation, Multi-platformPSN Is Down
Sony's PlaYStation Network is experiencing network issues currently. The official PlayStation Status page notes that, "All services are experiencing issues." This includes account management, gaming and social, PlayStation Video, PlayStation Store, and PlayStation Direct. The website Downdetector(https://downdetector.co.uk/status/playstation-network/) notes that the PSN issues have been ongoing for hours already. People are reporting issues with logging in, launching games, and connecting to servers. !(https://www.gamespot.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Screenshot-2026-07-24-at-11.07.28-AM.png?w=636) Oof. Whenever the PSN goes down, it's unfortunate, but the timing is especially tough for people wanting to try the Marvel Tokon multiplayer beta that started today, July 24. "We're aware that some PlayStation players are experiencing login and network issues. Our team is actively investigating the problem and working to identify the cause. We'll share updates as soon as we have more information," the developers wrote(https://x.com/MARVELTokon/status/2080634440670191989). On the PlayStation Status page, Sony wrote, "We're working to resolve the issue as soon as possible. Thank you for your patience."
🎮 Multi-platformHere’s Why The New Resident Evil Movie Has Snow And Smartphones
There's undeniable hype and chatter for filmmaker Zach Cregger's Resident Evil movie(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/resident-evil-movie-release-date-cast-story/1100-6534453/), but one talking point from fans concerns the evident differences in setting between the adaptation and the Resident Evil 2 game, despite the film "living in the world" of that game(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/resident-evil-movie-director-says-it-lives-in-the-world-of-these-specific-games/1100-6534441/). But Cregger hasn't been shy to address these creative changes, and he candidly spoke about why his movie is set in the present day with a snowy backdrop. Speaking at San Diego Comic-Con (per DiscussingFilm), Cregger reminded fans that he "took liberties to tell a story he wanted to tell and make a movie look the way he wanted to look." While the Raccoon City outbreak depicted in Resident Evil 2 and 3 takes place in September 1998, Cregger's film depicts characters using contemporary iPhones and sets the outbreak during wintry weather. "I am not doing exactly a one-to-one Resident Evil 2 adaptation," Cregger said. "There are differences between the movie and the game." He added that the snow is an aesthetic choice, and he "looks really fking cool to have a horror movie set in the snow." https://twitter.com/DiscussingFilm/status/2080477872934854745?s=20 These statements are consistent with what Cregger has been saying about his film for the past couple of years--he's previously talked about how his film is "following the rules" of the Resident Evil world(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/resident-evil-movie-director-says-he-is-following-the-rules-but-also-telling-a-new-story/1100-6534939/) while wanting to create an original story in that universe. The latest Resident Evil trailer(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/watch-the-new-resident-evil-movie-trailer/) certainly shows the writer-director's love for the series, with numerous easter eggs(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/the-new-resident-evil-movie-already-looks-like-a-love-letter-to-the-games/) and moments that tonally fit with the Resident Evil games. The original Resident Evil 2 takes place in 1998 because, well, it released in 1998. It was a present-day setting at the time, and Cregger has chosen to set his film, which premieres September 18 this year, in our present day. Series purists might disagree(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/resident-evil-movie-director-knows-fans-of-the-games-may-not-be-happy/1100-6539740/), but Cregger is arguing that he'd rather capture the spirit of a Resident Evil game in a movie rather than creating a story completely subservient to lore. "If the barrier of entry is whether I do a one-for-one port, then I guess in that regard, I have failed," Cregger said at San Diego Comic-Con. "But I think the movie is stronger for it." 🎮 Multi-platformResident Evil 4 Has Sold More Than Twice As Much As Any Other Current-Gen Remake
The launch of Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced has proven that there's still a strong appetite for video game remakes, and at 3.5 million sales(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/ac-black-flag-resynced-is-a-hit-but-people-are-particularly-upset-about-one-thing/) and counting, Ubisoft's new game is off to a smashing start. That's not too bad, and if you look at the numbers, the Black Flag remake is already one of the best games in this category of the current generation. It still has a long, long way to go before it can dethrone the current king of remakes, as 2023's Resident Evil 4 is still a sales juggernaut. According to new data by Alinea Analytics(https://alineaanalytics.substack.com/p/this-gens-top-remakes-and-remasters), the Resident Evil 4 remake(https://www.gamespot.com/reviews/resident-evil-4-remake-review-stranga-stranga-now-thats-a-remake/1900-6418047/) has reached lifetime sales of 16.8 million units across PC and console so far. One thing to note is that the game has lifetime sales of 13.6 million units(https://www.capcom.co.jp/ir/english/business/million.html) as of March 31, 2026, according to Capcom, and it hasn't updated those figures yet. If Resident Evil 4 has sold another 3 million units in the last couple of months, then that would make it the company's fifth-best-selling game of all time, leaping over the lifetime sales of Resident Evil Village (14.90 million) and Monster Hunter World: Iceborne (16 million). We've reached out to Alinea Analytics for clarification on the figure and will update as soon as we hear back. !(https://www.gamespot.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Sales-remakes.jpg?w=636) The remake gold rush has a clear champion. As for the rest of the list, the other entrants all boast impressive numbers of their own. Alinea counted games released for the current console generation--starting on November 10--and its data covers overall estimates of copies sold across PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. In the number two spot is Ark: Survival Ascended, the 2023 remake of 2015's Ark: Survival Evolved, with 7 million units sold so far. Steam is where the lion's share of the sales came from (3.9 million), followed by PlayStation (2.1 million) and Xbox (1 million). The Last of Us Part 1(https://www.gamespot.com/reviews/the-last-of-us-part-i-ps5-and-pc-review-desolation-row/1900-6417949/) took third place with 6.3 million lifetime sales, which is pretty high considering that it was only available on PS5 and PC. Oblivion Remastered generated 4.5 million lifetime sales, Dead Space(https://www.gamespot.com/games/dead-space/reviews/) reached 4.3 million units sold, and Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth(https://www.gamespot.com/reviews/final-fantasy-7-rebirth-review-destinys-child/1900-6418187/) sits at 4.2 million units sold since it launched in early 2024. Bloober Team's Silent Hill 2 remake(https://www.gamespot.com/reviews/silent-hill-2-remake-review-born-from-a-wish/1900-6418296/) rounds out the list at 3.2 million lifetime sales, but since Ubisoft revealed the Black Flag remake sales numbers this week, it looks like the Ubisoft game has already outperformed it and in record time. Not even sales chart success could save Dead Space !4206823-dead-space.jpg(https://www.gamespot.com/wp-content/uploads/original/1601/16018044/4206823-dead-space.jpg?w=636) Dead Space Sadly, while Dead Space occupies a prime spot on the list, it wasn't enough to save the franchise from going on hiatus. The sci-fi horror series is reportedly on ice at EA(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/dont-expect-a-new-dead-space-game-anytime-soon/1100-6536760/), and there are no plans for a new sequel, remake, or even reboot of the IP in the future. Dead Space co-creator Glen Schofield revealed last year that he's attempted to revive(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/dead-space-co-creator-is-making-calls-about-dead-space-4/1100-6535502/) the series at EA with pitches that he claimed would save the company tens of millions if they greenlit it, but so far, there has been nothing but radio silence regarding its future. Schofield also recently announced that he is retiring(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/glen-schofield-talks-200-million-call-of-duty-games-canceled-vietnam-game-and-how-dead-space-came-to-be/) from day-to-day game development. Remakes are more valuable than you think !4597850-silent-hill-2.jpg(https://www.gamespot.com/wp-content/uploads/original/1601/16018044/4597850-silent-hill-2.jpg?w=636) Silent Hill 2 Alinea noted that while remakes have been around for decades, in recent years, they've become a vital part of the video game industry for many publishers. "The way I see it, it's a direct response to the AAA market's woes," Alinea's Rhys Elliott wrote. "A brand-new IP is a six-to-eight-year gamble with no guaranteed audience, the riskiest bet on the board at the worst possible time to be making those bets. A high-fidelity remake is different, with a proven design blueprint, a built-in fanbase, and a much shorter, cheaper production cycle. So the budget gatekeepers aren't gambling on whether people want the thing--the demand’s proven. AKA, less risk." As Elliot noted, constantly remaking games is not a sound business strategy. Capcom appears to have cracked the right approach, as it uses remakes to help make the production of new games less risky, resulting in critically acclaimed titles like Pragmata. A remake is seen as a dependable source of revenue that also keeps an IP relevant, giving a publisher the space it needs to work on a new project. Mario and The Legend of Zelda creator Shigeru Miyamoto has also spoken about remakes, defending them(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/nintendos-shigeru-miyamoto-defends-remakes-ahead-of-ocarina-of-time-switch-2-remake/) as a way to connect with new audiences. Meanwhile, last year saw dozens of familiar IP dominate the JRPG genre. The top-rated games--according to GameSpot's sister site Metacritic--were remakes and remasters(https://www.gamespot.com/gallery/the-best-rpgs-of-2025-according-to-metacritic/2900-7301/7), with only a handful of original IP like Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 and Sea of Stars: Throes of the Watchmaker emerging to earn critical acclaim. 🎮 Multi-platformReacher Star Alan Ritchson Loves Call Of Duty, Would Be Up For Being In The Movie
Alan Ritchson, known for his role as Aquaman on Smallville and Jack Reacher on Reacher, has revealed that Call of Duty is his favorite video game and that he would be interested in appearing in the upcoming Call of Duty movie. Appearing on the Happy Sad Confused podcast(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LUAInbhIi9c), Richtson said video game adaptations(https://www.gamespot.com/gallery/video-game-movies-in-the-works/2900-5059/) "scare me a little bit" because "so few work." He's right that video game movies have a spotty track record when it comes to critical and commercial success, with many notable flops, like 2024's Borderlands(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/borderlands-movie-reviews-call-it-miserable-failure-fun-and-generic/1100-6525625/). There have been huge hits, too, including The Super Mario Bros. Movie, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, Five Nights at Freddy's, and Minecraft. "I think the ones that work are the ones that are made directly for kids. Minecraft is a good example. If you make it for kids first, or it's fun... or self-aware, they tend to work. But ones that take themselves too seriously ... shrugs. It has to know what it is and it has to be ready to have a good time," he explained. !(https://www.gamespot.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Screenshot-2026-07-24-at-10.14.02-AM-1.png) Alan Ritchson and his muscles in a scene from Reacher. Asked if he would be up for a role in the Call of Duty movie, he said, "I do love Call of Duty, man... if the story is right." He also advocated for the Call of Duty movie to feature Zombies, which he said are the best part of the Call of Duty series. The Call of Duty movie is set in the Modern Warfare universe(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/call-of-duty-movie-gets-a-key-update-about-its-setting/), which is not normally associated with the franchise's Zombies mode. But in Hollywood, anything is possible. https://twitter.com/LoganTaaffe/status/2080401000675029023 The Call of Duty movie has no confirmed casting yet, but we do know it's going to be directed by Lone Survivor's Peter Berg, with Sicario's Taylor Sheridan writing. Paramount is producing the movie. As for the Call of Duty game series, Modern Warfare 4 is the next entry in the series and it's coming this October. A free multiplayer beta takes place in August.(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/call-of-duty-modern-warfare-4-beta-dates-revealed-heres-how-to-get-in/)

🎮 Multi-platformAtari Announces 10-Movie Deal With Universal But Don’t Expect Them All To Get Made
Video games are the hot new thing in Hollywood AKA the next content library to mine for ideas and stories. Atari has announced a 10-movie deal with Jurassic World and The Odyssey studio Universal to adapt some of the company's legendary video game properties for the big screen. Announced at San Diego Comic-Con, Atari has partnered with Entertainment 360 to make a deal with Universal Pictures to give the movie studio the option to develop 10 Atari games into films. Not all of them are expected to go forward, as is often the case with development deals in Hollywood. According to Deadline,(https://deadline.com/2026/07/atari-universal-deal-10-game-ip-script-matt-reilly-carl-hampe-entertainment-360-1237001656/) Universal has, however, already bought the first project from the 10-movie deal and hired Matt Reilly and Carl Hampe to write and produce. What this movie is, however, remains a mystery, but Deadline said it's an "original spec" from Reilly. He is a former Universal executive who switched to screenwriting and producing. Hampe, meanwhile, was a producer on 2019's Hellboy and also worked on Jungle Cruise. The 10-movie deal includes the following Atari properties: - Asteroids - Adventure - Berzerk - Breakout - Centipede - Crystal Castles - Millipede - Missile Command - Pong - Yars' Revenge Atari CEO and chairman Wade Rosen said, "We are excited to work with Universal and Entertainment 360 to bring the spirit of our iconic brand and games to a new medium.” There are 50+ video game movies(https://www.gamespot.com/gallery/video-game-movies-in-the-works/2900-5059/) currently at various stages of production in Hollywood. In terms of movies that are definitely coming out, Zach Cregger's Resident Evil movie arrives in September(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/resident-evil-movie-actor-nearly-died-during-filming-after-150-pound-blood-bag-almost-hit-him/), followed by Street Fighter in October(https://www.gamespot.com/gallery/street-fighter-movie-release-date-cast-and-everything-we-know-so-far/2900-6770/).
