D&D unveils new Arcana Unleashed book, which includes the first real testing ground for 5.5e

Overview & Key Takeaways

Arcana Unleashed is a high-magic-focused D&D product that will include the first big adventure for 5.5e, releasing this September.

Despite a somewhat slow start owing to a big team restructuring, the latest edition of Dungeons & Dragons, now officially called D&D 5.5e, has delivered a good slate of products, ranging from the core rulebooks to campaign settings for both Forgotten Realms and Ravenloft. However, one thing was missing until now.

The large adventure campaigns that were the trademark of 5e and one of the reasons behind that edition's success are finally returning as part of Arcana Unleashed, the newest mainline D&D product, launching this September as part of the "Season of Magic." The main book is an expansion for players and Dungeon Masters that focuses on high magic, "featuring powerful spellcasting options, evolving magic items, arcane factions, and magical threats that can shape the fate of entire worlds," according to a news release. It is accompanied by Arcana Unleashed: Deadfall, a large adventure for high-level characters (levels 11โ€“20), set in Thay, the dangerous land ruled by the powerful and malicious Red Wizards.

With 128 pages, Arcana Unleashed: Deadfall is a decently bulky adventure, but it's still half the size of similar products that defined the 5e era. Curse of Strahd, Rime of the Frostmaiden, Descent into Avernus, Out of the Abyss, and other similar products all clocked in around 250โ€“300 pages. The scope, however, seems similar. Deadfall promises 10 levels of character progression, which makes for a long and interesting campaign. The theme will be "magical spy thriller," according to the description of the book on D&D Beyond, as players will have to navigate the intricacies of Thay society, where every mistake can lead to a painful death, with the ultimate goal of confronting the country's immortal ruler, the lich Szass Tam.

The book includes:

  • A complete level 11โ€“20 adventure
  • Thay Gazetteer (24 pages) โ€” a DM's guide to Thay's provinces, Zulkirs, Red Wizard politics, society, and intrigue
  • 14 magical items
  • 6 high-CR creatures, including stat block for Szass Tam, and advice on how to play him
  • 5 chapters detailing the adventure with 20+ dedicated maps
  • Advice on how to run a magical spy thriller and adventures in Thay

The core Arcana Unleashed book's contents are as follows:

  • 8 new and revised subclasses inspired by powerful arcane traditions
  • 33 new and revised spells that unleash spellcasting prowess in new ways
  • 19 magical creatures ranging from mysterious allies to deadly foes
  • 9 arcane factions and 6 group patrons that shape the politics and power of magical society
  • 47 magical items including evolving relics and legendary artifacts
  • Tomb of the Shadow Serpents: A level 1 introductory adventure for 1 to 2 sessions of play
  • 10 backgrounds and 20+ feats rooted in arcane factions and magical traditions
  • Pre-Order Bonus: The Arcane Mastery Digital Dice Set, Dungeon Masters: Arcana Unleashed Play-Along Pack, and D&D Encounters: Red Wizardsโ€™ Gambit mini adventure

The products can be purchased separately or as part of a bundle that includes the Arcana Unleashed Map Pack.

The subclasses will likely include finalized versions of those that appeared in the Unearthed Arcana arcane subclasses playtest material. If you want a sneak peek at how these new rules look at the table, then you should check out the second season of Dungeon Masters, the official D&D actual play show, which started airing on July 8 on the D&D YouTube channel. The cast (Devora Wilde, Neil Newbon, Mayanna Berrin, and Christian Navarro) led by DM Jasmine Bhullar did a fantastic job with the first season, set in Ravenloft, and they will now have to contend with the treachery of the Red Wizards.

While the core Arcana Unleashed book is the centerpiece of this release, and it includes a plethora of new, interesting options, Deadfall will be more significant as a testing ground. It's not a stretch to say that D&D 5.5e is still trying to find its identity. Speaking with Polygon last month, D&D principal game designer Wes Schneider said that the team's priority is listening to what the players say and trying, whenever possible, to deliver products that satisfy their demands. Players who transitioned from 5e to 5.5e surely miss the big adventure campaigns. The latest edition seems to have taken a different approach, focusing on broader products such as campaign settings and introducing mini-adventures, which are meant to give DMs a quick, easy-to-follow adventure outline rather than a big campaign sandbox.

Arcana Unleashed: Deadfall will be 5.5e's first attempt at delivering the type of product that made 5e the most popular D&D edition ever. โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹

GTA 6 Leak Shows Off Apparent Nudist Colony

A new clip showing leaked Grand Theft Auto 6(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/grand-theft-auto-6-everything-we-know/1100-6503729/) footage has made its way online, and it looks like you're going to be able to visit a nudist colony in Leonida. The clip, which just runs for a few minutes, shows co-protagonist Jason walking near a pool and several hot tubs, with dozens of naked people hanging around and dancing. Some of them seem relatively neutral to Jason's presence, while others are annoyed with the completely clothed man walking around and looking at them with binoculars. That seems like a reasonable reaction. One woman in particular notices Jason leering with binoculars and physically attacks him. Again, reasonable. While we've seen a whole bunch of GTA 6 clips from a still-at-large leaker(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/gta-6-leaker-has-not-been-identified-yet-report/) over the last week, they may not have a particularly negative effect on Rockstar. According to a former technical director at the studio, the vast majority of players don't care about the leaked footage, and it pales in comparison to the controversial Hot Coffee incident(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/gta-6-leaks-dont-matter-and-arent-as-bad-as-hot-coffee-scandal-ex-rockstar-director-says/) that affected Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. Still, Take-Two is actively subpoenaing information(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/microsoft-and-discord-subpoenaed-in-gta-6-leak-case/) related to the leaks in an effort to uncover the leaker's identity. We'll get our first official look at gameplay on August 27, exclusively on Netflix(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/gta-6-extended-look-coming-august-27-on-netflix/). Grand Theft Auto 6 launches for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19.
