All Xbox studios remaining following mass layoffs and restructure

Polygon RSS FeedGiovanni Colantonio6 min read(about 1 month ago)

Overview & Key Takeaways

Here's what we know about every studio remaining at Xbox following the company's mass layoff announcement.

Xbox announced a significant overhaul of its business Monday, which will see the company cutting 20% of its organization over the next 12 months. As part of that change, Xbox is parting ways with four studios, and potentially cutting a fifth down the line. Double Fine and Compulsion Games are once again going independent with runway funding from Microsoft, and taking their IP with them. Undead Labs and Ninja Theory have been sold to new buyers who have yet to be disclosed. Arkane Studios’ fate is up in the air as Xbox says the studio is reviewing its “potential strategic options.”

Less clear is the future of the studios still owned by Microsoft. Xbox is cutting 3,200 jobs as part of the move, with only 350 of them tied to the four studios it is divesting from. (That number doesn’t include Arkane Studios.) It’s currently unclear how the studios remaining under the Xbox umbrella will be impacted by the layoffs. In a post on Xbox Wire, CEO Asha Sharma only said that cuts will “vary in size” across its remaining teams. She also says that no games that those studios were working on have been canceled.

As the dust settles on a hard reset, we have some idea of what Xbox will look like going forward. The details are still hazy, but you can get a sense of what franchises Xbox will focus on based on the studios it is keeping open. Here’s what the lay of the land looks like right now, though note that the details of how many employees have been cut from the following studios is still unclear.

Activision

Xbox announced a significant overhaul of its business Monday, which will see the company cutting 20% of its organization over the next 12 months. As part of that change, Xbox is Considering that Microsoft acquired Activision Blizzard in 2023 for a final total cost of $75 billion, it’s safe to say that the publisher will remain an integral part of Xbox’s strategy going forwards. On the Activision side, the publisher is largely focused on Call of Duty right now, with most of the studios under its umbrella working on the series in some way. That includes Infinity Ward, Raven Software, Treyarch, and Sledgehammer Games. The series’ next game, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, is scheduled to release on Oct 23. It will not be a day-one release on Xbox Game Pass, as Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 was in 2025.

Blizzard

It’s currently unclear how Blizzard has been impacted by the layoffs, though Sharma’s memo does seem to indicate the publisher will face cuts. At the moment, Blizzard is juggling several IPs including Overwatch, World of Warcraft, Hearthstone, and Diablo. Blizzard is still scheduled to host its dedicated convention, BlizzCon, on Sept. 12-13, so we should get more concrete details on the company’s future then.

King

The biggest shake-up from the Activision Blizzard side of Xbox has to do with Candy Crush developer King. The studio will now directly report to Sharma, alongside Mojang. It sounds as though King will be a major part of Xbox’s strategy going forward, per Sharma’s memo: “These two studios have increasingly become platforms and are our largest by monthly active players. They bring critical geographic, demographic, and differentiation to XBOX.”

Bethesda

Acquired by Xbox in 2021, Bethesda will also undergo some changes as part of the layoffs. Arkane Studios is currently under Bethesda’s wing, so that’s one studio it will lose if it is sold or closed. Bethesda’s other studios will remain open, though some have reportedly been hit with layoffs. Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier reports that Doom studio Id Software and Elder Scrolls Online developer ZeniMax Online Studios cut a “significant number of staff” as part of the news. There’s no word at present on cuts to Wolfenstein developer MachineGames or Starfield developer Bethesda Games Studio. Sharma’s confirmation that no games have been canceled would indicate that the latter is still working on The Elder Scrolls 6.

The Coalition

As for teams remaining under the Xbox Game Studios banner, you can see Xbox’s focus tightening on a handful of IPs. The Coalition, the developer behind the Gears of War franchise, will continue working on the series. That’s no surprise given that Gears of War: E-Day is set to be one of Xbox’s big holiday games, and a proper exclusive for Xbox Series X consoles. It's set to launch on Oct. 6.

Halo Studios

Also unsurprising is that Halo Studios is remaining at Xbox. The team is currently working on Halo: Campaign Evolved, a remake of the shooting series’ first game, and it is scheduled to release on July 28. The studio’s plans beyond that are unclear, though. Rumors are currently circulating that the team recently canceled an upcoming Halo multiplayer project codenamed Project Ekur. Xbox has yet to confirm that rumor publicly.

Mojang Studios

Minecraft is also likely to become a major priority for Xbox moving forward. (The series’ next game, Minecraft Dungeons 2, will launch on Sept. 29.) Developer Mojang Studios will now report directly to Sharma, just as King will. According to a report from Game File, Sharma believes that Sharma has been “massively underinvested.” Also significant is that Minecraft franchise vice president Helen Chiang has become Xbox’s first chief operating officer as part of the shakeup.

Obsidian Entertainment

Following a mistaken report last week that Obsidian Entertainment could face closure as part of Xbox’s layoffs, the studio remains open under the Xbox Game Studios banner. Its future is a bit mysterious, though. The team isn’t actively working on an IP at the scale of Halo or Gears of War. Currently, it’s still working on updating Grounded 2, but we don’t know much about what it’s making beyond that. The important detail to remember here is that Obsidian developed Fallout: New Vegas, so it still has ties to a major franchise that Xbox has struggled to capitalize on as Bethesda Game Studios has been head down on The Elder Scrolls 6. We wouldn’t be surprised to learn Obsidian will be working on a new Fallout project, though nothing’s been made official at this stage.

Playground Games

Considering that Playground Games just launched a major hit inForza Horizon 6, and will release Fable next year, it’s no surprise that Xbox is hanging on to the studio. Here’s a sobering detail, though: Playground Games is now the only studio remaining from Xbox’s 2018 expansion of its publishing efforts. At that year’s E3, Xbox announced that it had acquired Playground Games, Compulsion Games, Undead Labs, and Ninja Theory. That’s also where it announced that it was opening The Initiative, a studio that was shut down in 2025 as it was mid-development on a Perfect Dark reboot.

Turn 10 Studios

Even aside from Playground Games remaining at Xbox, it’s clear that Forza will be a priority franchise for the company in its next phase. Turn 10 Studios, the team behind the Forza Motorsport series, will remain at Xbox. Keep in mind, though, that Turn 10 already suffered a major blow during Xbox’s 2025 layoff wave. The team lost 70 employees and pivoted away from the Motorsport series to support Playground Games on the Forza Horizon series.

Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Beta Trailer Shows Off Franchise’s Most Ambitious Map Yet

Activision has released a teaser trailer for the upcoming Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 first beta weekend(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/call-of-duty-modern-warfare-4-beta-dates-revealed-heres-how-to-get-in/), and it looks pretty great. The trailer shows off some of the content in the beta, and that includes, for the first time in the franchise's history, a slice of the game's single-player campaign. The first beta runs April 21-25, and it's available for those who preorder the game on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. The beta allows players to try the campaign mission, Entrenched, along with the modular map Kill Block(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/see-cod-modern-warfare-4s-constantly-changing-kill-block-map-in-action/) (among others). Kill Block, the most ambitious Call of Duty multiplayer map ever(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/see-cod-modern-warfare-4s-constantly-changing-kill-block-map-in-action/), mashes up several fan-favorite Call of Duty maps in a unique way that should keep players on their toes. Modern Warfare 4’s Kill Block is set at the fictional West Bridge Advanced Military Training Facility, where modular battlegrounds reconfigure before every match, creating hundreds of potential map combinations. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VGQoDkezJ0Y MW4 is coming to Nintendo Switch 2, but the first beta weekend won't be available on that platform because preorders don't begin until August 26 on Nintendo's console, for reasons Activision has not disclosed. The MW4 beta will open to everyone August 28-31, with no preorder requirement. This second period includes the same single-player campaign mission, along with different multiplayer maps, access to the big Ground War mode, and a first opportunity to try Warzone's new Resurgence Zodiac map. MW4 launches on October 23, which is about a month before GTA 6 arrives on November 19. The game is coming to PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Switch 2. It's the first Call of Duty game on a Nintendo platform since 2013's Call of Duty: Ghosts. It's also the first Call of Duty game since Ghosts to skip PS4 and Xbox One. MW4 is also notable because, unlike Black Ops 7 and Black Ops 6 before it, the game will not launch directly into Xbox Game Pass as part of Microsoft's shifting multiplatform release strategy.

Mistfall Hunter Players Are Begging For This One Addition, And The Devs Just Won’t Do It

Mistfall Hunter(https://www.gamespot.com/games/mistfall-hunter/) has been out for almost three weeks now, with the extraction brawler launching on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S on July 29. Dating back to even its open beta, the community has been begging developer Bellring Games for one addition: a dedicated mode for teams of two. All over the game's official subreddit(https://www.reddit.com/r/MistfallHunter/) are posts from players asking that the developer include a duos mode. "I need duos," Redditor broman510 titled an August 11 post(https://www.reddit.com/r/MistfallHunter/comments/1vh8nrv/ineedduos/). "In this, duos vs trios seems so hard and almost impossible; most of the time one of us is getting jumped by 2 and poked down by one." "We need duos," Matta114 posted on August 17(https://www.reddit.com/r/MistfallHunter/comments/1vqkbwt/weneedduosdothedevsreadthissubreddit/). "I don't care if the game is balanced for trios. I'll take unbalanced duos over trios with some random 3rd dude that runs the opposite direction every game." "Upvote for duos," wrote PuwudleRS in an August 8 post that generated 1.3 upvotes(https://www.reddit.com/r/MistfallHunter/comments/1vioube/upvoteforduos/). "I am addicted to this game, but I CRAVE the duo experience this game has to offer. Please devs, I am begging with my life." The common complaint from the community is that duos would allow friends more flexibility when playing together. Not everyone has two other people online at the same time and willing to play the same game. You can queue into trios, but you and your bestie will get a random third fill-in--and randoms are oftentimes unpredictable and unreliable. "Between the lack of comms from randoms, to people flaking out in fights and leaving their teammates die, to the stealing all the loot (especially if the third is a melee and they can grab the bodies first)," Redditor kennypeace wrote on August 5(https://www.reddit.com/r/MistfallHunter/comments/1vgaxpd/gameisgreatbutneedsduoqueueurgently/). "The amount of times I've died, watching someone loot a dead player, whilst their teammates are fighting for their lives, is unbearable. Three stack is miserable at the moment, and I'm not even gonna mention the bloody lag (in Europe, hope you Americans are faring better over there) that may be helped by lowering the team count." Unfortunately, the community's call may never be answered. Back in March 2026, developer Bellring Games took to X(https://x.com/MistfallHunter/status/2029389233832730625) to share that it currently has "no plans" to add a duos mode to Mistfall Hunter. Even though the studio knows it's a "highly requested feature," duos would impact the game's matchmaking efficiency. "More importantly, it would exacerbate balance issues," Bellring Games said. "It is difficult to ensure balanced gameplay for duos while also maintaining balance for trio and solo modes. For now, we are prioritizing other areas of development." Redditors have called for users to "make a suggestion for duo queues" in the Discord, and now the support-hub server is rife with users begging the team to add duos. Aside from the official statement posted on X, Bellring Games hasn't said anything else regarding a duos mode. It appears this tug-of-war will probably go on for a while. At least Mistfall Hunter is a cool experience, a fascinating amalgam of souls-like combat and extraction shooter elements to create something of an extraction brawler. It's made me a believer in extraction games(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/mistfall-hunter-has-made-me-a-believer-in-extraction-games/) as a whole.
