2024’s Greatest Roguelike Is a Must-Play on Xbox Game Pass

Overview & Key Takeaways

Balatro may look like a simple riff on poker, but beneath its simple pixel-art surface lies an engine for boundless experimentation.

In the original Star Wars, Han Solo says of the Millennium Falcon, “She might not look like much, kid. But she’s got it where it counts.” The same is also true of Balatro, the roguelike from solo developer LocalThunk that took the gaming world by storm back in 2024. It was nominated for five Game Awards and took home three, and had sold a whopping 5 million copies as of January 2025.

Balatro may look like a simple riff on poker, but beneath its pixel-art surface lies an engine for boundless experimentation. Your task is to play several poker hands of five or fewer cards to beat a score requirement that gets higher each round. There are eight antes, or levels, and each one contains three rounds. Depending on the luck of the draw, you can play any traditional poker hand you like, ranging from a simple high card to a straight flush.

It’s an old aphorism that “you can’t change the hand you’re dealt.” In Balatro, not only can you change the hand you’re dealt, your success absolutely depends on it. When you visit the in-game shop between rounds, you can buy more cards for your hand, making it lopsided with face cards. (Or threes, I guess, if you’re some kind of sicko.) And the customization doesn’t stop there. There are also tarot cards, which add extra points or increased point multipliers to the cards in your deck. Planet cards, meanwhile, increase the points you get for specific poker hands. Over time, that could mean that an easy-to-get hand like a pair actually earns you far more points than a technically better hand, like four-of-a-kind. As you progress through each ante, you’ll want to pick a lane and just run one or two hand types to maximize your score.

But it’s the jokers that allow Balatro to evolve from “poker with a gimmick” into an enchanting number-go-up machine that will captivate you for hours on end. You start each run with five joker slots, but depending on the circumstances, you can end up with plenty more than that. There are 150 different jokers in the game, and each one has a wildly different effect. Some are short-lived, like the Popcorn joker, which adds +20 to your multiplier, though the value diminishes by four points each round. Others are absurdly strong but hard to come by, like Cavendish, which adds a 3x multiplier to your entire hand.

In the early rounds, you’re free to experiment. But if you want to get past ante 8 — or beyond that into the infinite play mode that requires truly bonkers scores — you’ll need to find jokers that multiply your multiplier (like Cavendish, Gros Michel, and Baron) to send your points into the stratosphere. There are even jokers that duplicate the effects of other jokers (like Blueprint and Brainstorm). The way you organize your jokers at the top of the screen is important, too. Balatro demands that you respect the order of operations: put your points jokers to the far left, then additional mult, and then Xmult.

I’ll admit that sounds very complicated on paper, and at first, it kind of is. Early rounds of Balatro are all about learning through failure, but discovering wacky new jokers and experimenting while you vibe to the groovy tunes keeps it fun the whole time. Balatro becomes a transcendent experience once you’ve acquainted yourself with its systems enough to make you feel like you're breaking the game, even when you're playing it precisely as it was designed to be played. Despite the snarky jester Jimbo heckling you every time you lose, eventually, Balatro will make you feel like a once-in-a-generation math genius.

Prevents Death if chips scored are at least 25% of required ships. Self destructs.” Image: LocalThunk/Playstack via Polygon

While Balatro is wonderful on a handheld device like a Nintendo Switch or even your phone, I would warn you against dancing with the devil in this way. This is not a game you want to bring anywhere near your bed. It will wreak absolute havoc on your sleep hygiene, even if you have a great time doing it. Taking Balatro for a spin on Xbox Game Pass is the best way to see if it clicks for you. Just don’t say I didn’t warn you.

In addition to Game Pass, Balatro is available now on Android, iOS, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.

Mistfall Hunter Players Are Begging For This One Addition, And The Devs Just Won’t Do It

Mistfall Hunter(https://www.gamespot.com/games/mistfall-hunter/) has been out for almost three weeks now, with the extraction brawler launching on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S on July 29. Dating back to even its open beta, the community has been begging developer Bellring Games for one addition: a dedicated mode for teams of two. All over the game's official subreddit(https://www.reddit.com/r/MistfallHunter/) are posts from players asking that the developer include a duos mode. "I need duos," Redditor broman510 titled an August 11 post(https://www.reddit.com/r/MistfallHunter/comments/1vh8nrv/ineedduos/). "In this, duos vs trios seems so hard and almost impossible; most of the time one of us is getting jumped by 2 and poked down by one." "We need duos," Matta114 posted on August 17(https://www.reddit.com/r/MistfallHunter/comments/1vqkbwt/weneedduosdothedevsreadthissubreddit/). "I don't care if the game is balanced for trios. I'll take unbalanced duos over trios with some random 3rd dude that runs the opposite direction every game." "Upvote for duos," wrote PuwudleRS in an August 8 post that generated 1.3 upvotes(https://www.reddit.com/r/MistfallHunter/comments/1vioube/upvoteforduos/). "I am addicted to this game, but I CRAVE the duo experience this game has to offer. Please devs, I am begging with my life." The common complaint from the community is that duos would allow friends more flexibility when playing together. Not everyone has two other people online at the same time and willing to play the same game. You can queue into trios, but you and your bestie will get a random third fill-in--and randoms are oftentimes unpredictable and unreliable. "Between the lack of comms from randoms, to people flaking out in fights and leaving their teammates die, to the stealing all the loot (especially if the third is a melee and they can grab the bodies first)," Redditor kennypeace wrote on August 5(https://www.reddit.com/r/MistfallHunter/comments/1vgaxpd/gameisgreatbutneedsduoqueueurgently/). "The amount of times I've died, watching someone loot a dead player, whilst their teammates are fighting for their lives, is unbearable. Three stack is miserable at the moment, and I'm not even gonna mention the bloody lag (in Europe, hope you Americans are faring better over there) that may be helped by lowering the team count." Unfortunately, the community's call may never be answered. Back in March 2026, developer Bellring Games took to X(https://x.com/MistfallHunter/status/2029389233832730625) to share that it currently has "no plans" to add a duos mode to Mistfall Hunter. Even though the studio knows it's a "highly requested feature," duos would impact the game's matchmaking efficiency. "More importantly, it would exacerbate balance issues," Bellring Games said. "It is difficult to ensure balanced gameplay for duos while also maintaining balance for trio and solo modes. For now, we are prioritizing other areas of development." Redditors have called for users to "make a suggestion for duo queues" in the Discord, and now the support-hub server is rife with users begging the team to add duos. Aside from the official statement posted on X, Bellring Games hasn't said anything else regarding a duos mode. It appears this tug-of-war will probably go on for a while. At least Mistfall Hunter is a cool experience, a fascinating amalgam of souls-like combat and extraction shooter elements to create something of an extraction brawler. It's made me a believer in extraction games(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/mistfall-hunter-has-made-me-a-believer-in-extraction-games/) as a whole.

Fortnite's Upcoming Season Includes Crossovers With Iconic Games Like Sonic, Mega Man, Persona, and Kingdom Hearts

!Game Informer News(https://gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/bodydefault/public/2026/08/17/a7d19c04/chapter7season4overrideofficialtrailer0-32screenshot.jpg.webp) Fortnite's newest season, Override, begins on August 20, and yesterday's trailer confirmed the new map and battle pass will be centered on a wide range of video game crossovers. The most notable inclusion is Sonic the Hedgehog; he'll be playable as a skin (stretched to fit Fortnite's standard proportions), and elements of Green Hill Zone will appear on the map. The new footage shows Jonesy running fast enough to go upside-down on one of the series' staple gravity-defying loops. However, Sonic is just the tip of the iceberg in Chapter 7, Season 4 of Fortnite. In addition to other characters from his universe, including Tails, Dr. Eggman, and Shadow, the trailer also includes glimpses of Mega Man, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro the Dragon(https://gameinformer.com/xbox-games-showcase/2026/06/07/spyro-a-realm-beyond-is-a-brand-new-spyro-adventure), Joker from Persona 5, and giant Tetris blocks that fall from the sky. Key art released by the official Fortnite account also shows glimpses of Pac-Man and Sora from Kingdom Hearts (who we recently saw a lot of in the new D23 footage(https://gameinformer.com/2026/08/17/kingdom-hearts-iv-gets-2027-launch-window-coco-world-reveal-kingdom-hearts-anime)). Meanwhile, it looks like other characters who have appeared as skins in past seasons, like Master Chief, Geralt, Ryu, and Lara Croft, are also returning (to the battle shop). !Game Informer News(https://gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/bodydefault/public/2026/08/17/ab1eeeff/fortniteoverride.jpg.webp)(https://gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/nocompression/public/2026/08/17/ab1eeeff/fortniteoverride.jpg.webp) Gameplay-wise, the trailer also shows a backpack-based power-up system, where wearing items associated with characters like Sonic or Tails gives you the powers of speed or flight, respectively. We also see weapons like Mega Man's arm cannon and the 8-bit shotgun, the latter of which seems to track the player's score. The trailer concludes with a glimpse of Geno, a major villain in Fortnite's lore who will presumably be appearing as a boss for players to battle. You can check out the full trailer below: Fortnite's Chapter 7, Season 4 Override begins on August 20, and you can play it on basically every platform you can think of: PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch 2, PS4, Xbox One, Switch, PC, iOS, and Android.
