New Uwe Boll Zombie Movie Riffs On House Of The Dead And 28 Years Later

With video game adaptations being all the rage, it was only a matter of time before Uwe Boll returned to the world of filmmaking. The infamous director behind several video game movies like Postal and Far Cry, Boll has begun production on 23 Years Later: The Castle of the Dead, a spiritual successor to his 2003 adaptation of Sega's House of the Dead. The title for the movie is also suspiciously similar to the two 28 Years Later movies that were recently released.
Despite the crowdfunding push for the movie failing--no funds were collected from the whopping 39 backers who initially pledged $14,000 to the project--filming will kick off on September 5 in Germany. Jonathan Cherry and Ona Grauer, who starred in the original House of the Dead, are back for this project and Boll has teamed up with his longtime producer Michael Roesch to bring it to life.
Plot details are being kept under wraps, but Roesch said to THR that the film will be an upgrade when compared to House of the Dead, which was mostly set inside of a derelict home that was besieged by zombies. "We're upgrading from a house full of zombies to a castle full of zombies," Roesch said.

When the project was first announced, Boll spoke about how he couldn't make a House of the Dead film because of "somebody else" at the time. That someone else is Resident Evil and Event Horizon director Paul W.S. Anderson, who is adapting a new House of the Dead film that will feature The Last of Us star Isabela Merced.
"When I heard that Paul Anderson is rebooting House of the Dead, I immediately knew that it will be a soulless CGI orgy," said Boll in a statement. "And I want to do a completely different zombie movie: Bloody, gory, and handmade."
Boll--who directed several video game adaptations and also punched the daylights out of critics in several "Raging Boll" boxing matches--had actually retired from filmmaking in 2016 following a disastrous Kickstarter campaign and embarked on a restaurateur career that won him several awards. While Boll and Anderson are working on their respective zombie movie projects, Weapons director Zach Cregger's adaptation of Resident Evil will hit theaters in September.
The first trailer for the movie recently dropped, and it's already building hype for being a radical departure from the games it's based on.
