Rock Paper Shotgun ยป Guidesโœ Ollie Tomsโฑ 5 min read(3 months ago)

Overview & Key Takeaways

Oxygen is your most important resource in Subnautica 2, and it's important to give yourself as many ways as possible to top up your Oxygen, wherever you are in the ocean. The best way to do this is by building yourself a base near anywhere you'll be diving often. But after you've fashioned yourself a Habitat Builder and constructed your first base, you might be wondering: how do you supply your base with Oxygen?

There's a very simple answer to this question, and it involves Power. Read on to find out exactly how to get Oxygen in your base in Subnautica 2, so that any base you construct in the world becomes a safe haven of breathable air for all your diving needs.

How to get Oxygen in your base

To get Oxygen in your base, you simply need to power your base, as this will automatically fill the entire structure with unlimited breathable air. The easiest way to power your base is by building Solar Panels on top of your base roof using the Habitat Builder. As long as your Energy supply is greater than your Energy demand, your base will be fully Oxygenated.

Each Solar Panel costs 1x Titanium and 2x Quartz. Both these resources are extremely easy to come by in the area immediately surrounding the Lifepod. Each Solar Panel automatically supplies your base with 1-8 Energy depending on how much sunlight is reaching it.

The tricky part is keeping your base filled with Oxygen at all times, because Solar Panels will dip in power during the night. The solution is either to build a huge farm of Solar Panels so that even when each is only providing 1 Energy, that's still enough to power your whole base; or, look towards alternate, more consistent power sources.

The player in Subnautica 2 floats above the roof of their first base, looking at the array of Solar Panels on the roof providing Energy and Oxygen to the base. Here's the full list of all the ways you can provide your base with power (and, by extension, Oxygen):

Power SourceEnergyRecipe
Solar Panel1-8/sec1x Titanium, 2x Quartz
Hydroelectric Turbine12/sec3x Titanium, 3x Copper, 3x Silver
Thermal Plant1-16/sec3x Titanium, 3x Copper, 3x Gold
Bioreactor1-20/sec2x Titanium Ingot, 2x Copper Ingot

Hydroelectric Turbines must be built inside natural air currents, but they provide very stable Energy at all times, which means stable Oxygen. The Thermal Plant needs to be built inside the Zezuran Desert (the hot biome) for it to work properly, so you'll need to know how to enter that region safely, but afterwards it provides excellent consistent Energy.

Both these structures must be built outside your base, and connected to your base using Power Transmitters. The final Power Transmitter must be attached to your base exterior in order to link the power to your base.

The player in Subnautica 2 places down a Power Transmitter to connect a Hydroelectric Turbine to their base for increased Energy supply. The player in Subnautica 2 places down a Power Transmitter to connect a Hydroelectric Turbine to their base for increased Energy supply.

The other option you have is the Bioreactor, which can be built inside your base. It also provides the highest amount of Energy, but you need to manually keep it fuelled, ideally with Biofuel Blocks (which can be crafted in the Processor from Fibrous Pulp, Pents, or Crab Feces).

Using any of these Energy-supplying methods (or a combination of them), you can ensure that your base is always filled with Oxygen, making it a proper safe space for you at all times.

If you're wondering where to get the blueprints you need to craft some of these power sources, look no further than our massive list of All Databank entries in Subnautica 2, where we'll tell you exactly where to find each one.
