Subnautica 2: Where to find Silver

Rock Paper Shotgun ยป Guidesโœ Ollie Tomsโฑ 7 min read(3 months ago)

Overview & Key Takeaways

Silver is probably the most elusive of the basic materials in Subnautica 2. It's easy enough to find Titanium, Copper, and Quartz, but for Silver you will need to leave the starting biome behind. And you'll need to find Silver soon, because without it you have no way of increasing your Oxygen supply for longer and deeper dives.

Even if you have already found Silver nodes, it's highly likely you've only found the large Silver nodes which can't be mined without specialised equipment. And here's the kicker: that specialised equipment requires Silver to make! So how do you get your first Silver in Subnautica 2? I'll show you exactly where to go below, as well as the best and most efficient Silver locations later on in the game.

How to get your first Silver

Silver can be found in either large or small ore nodes. But large nodes can only be mined once you have a Sonic Resonator tool - which itself requires Silver. So to get your first Silver, you need to find small Silver ore nodes which can be mined by hand.

The best place to find Silver is inside the Silver cave 200 metres north of the lifepod, on the edge of the starting biome. To enter the Silver cave, head to the Angel Comb at the "Blackbox - Anita" signal location, then swim a few metres north until you see a cave entrance in the ocean floor, beside a platform of wreckage.

You'll know when you've found the cave, because the sides of the cave entrance are covered in glowing blue flowers. There's also another Blackbox (belonging to Singh) which you can pick up just outside the entrance.

Make your way through the cave collecting Silver as you go, and you'll very quickly fill your inventory. There's well over 100 Silver to be mined here, and there's a particularly strong concentration of Silver in the area towards the end of the cave, where the ceiling opens up into a ravine-like split which leads back into the ocean above.

You may also notice that there's a hidden habitat inside this cave, which you can use to refill your Oxygen easily!

Where to find large Silver nodes (Sonic Resonator needed)

Later on in Subnautica 2, you'll be able to craft a Sonic Resonator - a tool which allows you to mine the large Silver ore nodes. Once you do this, you'll have an even easier time topping up your Silver reserves, because there's a Silver deposit even closer to home.

The rocky biome 200 metres southeast of the lifepod is home to a great many large Silver nodes, so this is the best place to get Silver once you have a Sonic Resonator. Swim past the Welcome Center wreckage until you exit the starting biome, and begin to see several large rock pillars. Start at the largest nearby pillar - it's easily recognisable because it sticks out of the surface of the water like a three-fingered hand.

From here, this is the path I like to take when mining Silver:

  1. Swim down to the base of the pillar to find the first large Silver node.
  2. Another large Silver node is on the ocean floor, on the west side of the pillar (outside the cave).
  3. Swim southwest to another medium-sized pillar and you'll find a third large Silver node at its base.
  4. Head down the cliff to the southwest, and you'll see two more large Silver nodes at the base of two more pillars near the wreckage.
  5. On the opposite side of the wreckage is another large pillar with a fifth large Silver node halfway up.

For each of these Silver nodes, you can mine them by equipping your Sonic Resonator on your hotbar, pointing it at the node at close range, holding down right-click to charge up the tool, and then releasing once it's fully charged. Each node will break and deposit 5x Silver directly into your inventory, so this path is more than enough to fill your entire inventory with Silver.

If you do need more Silver for whatever reason, just keep exploring the various pillars in this rocky biome to the southeast, as it's home to dozens of large Silver nodes, and hundreds of Silver.

What is Silver used for in Subnautica 2?

Silver is primarily used in the fabrication of electronic components such as Wiring Kits, although it is used directly in the creation of certain pieces of equipment as well. Here's the full list of items which require Silver (or Silver components) in Subnautica 2:

That wraps up this primer on where to get Silver in Subnautica 2, so hopefully now you're all set to increase your Oxygen supply and swim deeper than ever before. If you want to create that Sonic Resonator, you'll need some other elusive resources too, so be sure to check out our guide on how to get Lead while you're here!

To that end, our next stop is the Flooded Village. Unlike the very similarly named Sunken Village(https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/mortal-shell-2-walkthrough-part-4-sunken-village) you just came from, the Flooded Village is a mere optional dungeon - but it holds two things of great interest: an optional boss, and a powerful new weapon which will serve you well for the rest of the game. Follow along with the steps below in our Flooded Village walkthrough, and I'll show you how to find and open the path to the Flooded Village dungeon, and how to conquer its interior and lay claim to the prize within.
