Subnautica 2: Heat Tolerance explained

Rock Paper Shotgun ยป Guidesโœ Ollie Tomsโฑ 5 min read(3 months ago)

Overview & Key Takeaways

If you've done much exploring to the east of your starting area in Subnautica 2, you'll likely have come across a region of the ocean where the temperature starts to increase. This "hot biome" is home to a great many thermal vents which spew out boiling hot water, and if you try to push into the area, you'll find that your flimsy terrestrial body simply cannot handle the heat.

Fortunately, there's a way to adapt to the incredible heat in this region. In the guide below, I'll walk you through exactly how to explore the hot biome in Subnautica 2, by unlocking the Heat Tolerance Adaptation via the Bloom infestations near spawn.

How to explore the hot biome in Subnautica 2

By default, you can't withstand temperatures greater than 80 degrees in Subnautica 2. As you venture further into the hot biome, temperatures will reach 100 degrees or higher, so before you can properly explore this incredibly hot biome, you need to adapt - just like you adapted to the crushing pressure of the ocean at the beginning of the game.

To explore the hot biome, you need to unlock the Heat Tolerance Adaptation. This Adaptation allows you to withstand temperatures of over 100 degrees Celsius. You can still be damaged by particularly intense heat by swimming too near the thermal vents in the hot biome, but you will still be able to withstand the ambient temperature of the region, allowing you to explore it fully.

Below I'll walk you through exactly where to go to gain this Adaptation, so you can enter the hot biome and explore key areas inside like the Tadpole Pens.

How to unlock the Heat Tolerance Adaptation

To unlock the Heat Tolerance Adaptation, you must destroy the three nearby Bloom infestations around the starting biome. You will need to unlock and build a Sonic Resonator so that you can destroy the Bloom Cankers around each of these infestation sites.

Here are the locations of the three Bloom infestations you need for the Heat Tolerance Adaptation:

  1. Below the Spider Dome, 230m WSW of the Lifepod.
  2. On the edge of the Jelly Barrens, 240 NNW of the Lifepod.
  3. 200m from the Lifepod, bearing 300 degrees. (MUST BE DONE LAST)

At each of these locations, you must use your Sonic Resonator to destroy the Bloom Cankers (the small Bloom flowers) around the Bloom Core. Once you've destroyed all of them at a location, the Bloom Core itself will open, cleansing the area of the infestation.

At the final of the three infestation areas, the Bloom Cankers will be closed and invulnerable until you wipe out the other two Bloom sites. Return to this third site once you've done this, and destroy the Bloom Cankers.

Be aware that this final Bloom area is guarded by a dangerous Marrowbreach, and with the Bloom Cankers open, the Bloom Parasites will attach to the Marrowbreach and make it even more aggressive. Use your Sonic Resonator to repel the Marrowbreach, and focus on destroying the Bloom Cankers as quickly as possible.

Don't have a Sonic Resonator?

There are two Sonic Resonator fragments inside the Old Habitat, a base 370m north of the Lifepod. Once you've scanned both fragments, you can craft your own at a Fabricator out of the following materials:

  • 1x Basic Battery
  • 2x Titanium Ingots
  • 2x Lead
  • 1x Wiring Kit (requires Silver)

Once you've destroyed all three Bloom Cankers, the Bloom Core at the centre will open up, revealing an Angel Comb. Interact with the pink jelly-like centre of the Angel Comb to at long last unlock the Heat Tolerance Adaptation.

Once you've done this, your body will automatically be able to tolerate much higher temperatures. The hot biome is now available for you to properly explore!

That's all you need in order to start exploring the hot biome and its incredible cave systems in Subnautica 2! You'll also soon find this region to be an excellent source of both Gold and Lithium, but you may first want to consult our guide on how to increase your max Oxygen supply before venturing too deep. For everything else, look no further than our massive Subnautica 2 Databank entries list.

To that end, our next stop is the Flooded Village. Unlike the very similarly named Sunken Village(https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/mortal-shell-2-walkthrough-part-4-sunken-village) you just came from, the Flooded Village is a mere optional dungeon - but it holds two things of great interest: an optional boss, and a powerful new weapon which will serve you well for the rest of the game. Follow along with the steps below in our Flooded Village walkthrough, and I'll show you how to find and open the path to the Flooded Village dungeon, and how to conquer its interior and lay claim to the prize within.
