PlayStation Reminds Players Of Its All-Digital Future In The Worst Way Possible

Polygon RSS FeedAshely Claudino3 min read(about 3 hours ago)

Overview & Key Takeaways

Recently, Sony has been sending PlayStation owners the console's terms and user agreements, leaving a bitter taste in their mouths.

The end is nigh for physical games on PlayStation, and Sony is making an effort to remind you of that. The company recently sent out an email reminding people of the terms and conditions they agreed to so they could use PlayStation consoles, underlining that digital purchases grant you a license, not a game. This has left a bitter taste in fans' mouths, especially after Sony announced plans for an all-digital future.

Starting January 2028, Sony will cease disc production. If that wasn't bad enough, some games released before 2028 are already hopping on the all-digital bandwagon, as they will not be available in a physical format at all. For example, Grand Theft Auto 6 will be a digital-only game. Any physical edition of GTA 6 will consist only of an empty box containing a download code. This takes away players' choice to actually own a game by buying a disc. Instead, they will be forced to make a digital purchase.

People already haven't reacted well to that announcement, which is why the recently sent out email from Sony stung even harder. This particular part of the PlayStation End User License Agreement is particularly gut-wrenching:

"1.4 The License to you

The Software is licensed to you, not sold. You are granted a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable, and personal license to play or use the Software for your private, non-commercial use on the system or device it was intended for. This license is only effective from the indicated Software release date, early access date, or beta release date. Any rights in the Software that we do not say are granted to you in this license are reserved, including all intellectual property in the Software."

It further reinforces these ideas in a clause about access restriction:

"4.2 Access Restrictions; Availability Limits

Virtual Content is licensed, not owned; Sony Interactive Entertainment can terminate your access to Virtual Content (whether paid for or free) if you breach these Software Terms, if any account associated with the Software is closed, terminated, banned, or suspended, or if the Software is modified in accordance with section 3.2 such that Virtual Content is discontinued. You understand and agree that in addition to licenses of Virtual Content being subject to purchase and cancelation terms and conditions of the storefront/vendor, the availability of Virtual Content is not guaranteed, prices are subject to change, and order sizes may be limited without prior notice to you. Purchases of Virtual Content licenses may be non-refundable; please check the terms and conditions of the Virtual Content storefront/vendor carefully."

Ultimately, Sony wants to remind players that when they buy a digital game, they don't actually own it. The content is licensed to them and can be revoked or become unavailable later on. While a boycott has been organized in response to PlayStation's all-digital plans, Sony is adamant about going that direction in the future and is unlikely to budge.

Call Of Duty: Black Ops 2 Port From 14 Years Ago Sold Better In July Than Any Other Game In US

Circana has released its latest monthly sales report, revealing which games sold the best in the US, and Activision's Call of Duty: Black Ops 1 and 2 ports performed particularly well. The Black Ops 2 port for PS4 and PS5 was July 2026's best-selling game overall in the US ranked by dollar sales. The Black Ops 1 port, meanwhile, ranked No. 5. !(https://www.gamespot.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/BlackOpsports.webp) The Black Ops ports for PS4 and PS5 did gangbusters in July. These games shadowdropped on July 9, priced at $40 (or $20 through August 6 for PS Plus subscribers). The games do not feature many technical or visual improvements, and that was kinda the whole point, as fans called on Activision to give them the OG experience for both, warts and all. That worked out well for Activision and Microsoft, as the games reportedly combined to sell more than 11 million copies, generating more than $430 million(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/black-ops-1-and-2-ports-sold-11-million-copies-combined-on-playstation-benefitting-both-xbox-and-sony/). Previously, the only way to play the games on PlayStation was to find an old PS3 and go from there since they were never made available via backwards compatibility on PS4 or PS5. The pent-up demand helped bolster sales(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/black-ops-1-and-2-ports-sold-11-million-copies-combined-on-playstation-benefitting-both-xbox-and-sony/), industry analyst Rhys Elliott said. He added that Activision spent basically zero dollars to market them, nor does the company need to spend money for ongoing development. Microsoft and Activision are the big winners here, and so is Sony–its 30% cut of the $430 million works out to about $130 million “for doing basically nothing” but hosting them, Elliott said. The games have no doubt sold more copies since Elliott released his report in early August, further enriching the parties involved. Circana said EA Sports College Football 27, which was July's No. 2 best-selling games based on dollar sales, would have been No. 1 had that game and the EA Sports MVP Bundle been combined. That bundle includes CFB 27 and Madden 27. Below you can see the top 10 best-selling games of July 2026 in the US. The figures include physical sales and estimated digital sales.
