Call Of Duty: Black Ops 2 Port From 14 Years Ago Sold Better In July Than Any Other Game In US

Overview & Key Takeaways

Circana has released its latest monthly sales report, revealing which games sold the best in the US, and Activision's Call of Duty: Black Ops 1 and 2 ports performed particularly well.

The Black Ops 2 port for PS4 and PS5 was July 2026's best-selling game overall in the US ranked by dollar sales. The Black Ops 1 port, meanwhile, ranked No. 5.

The Black Ops ports for PS4 and PS5 did gangbusters in July.

These games shadowdropped on July 9, priced at $40 (or $20 through August 6 for PS Plus subscribers). The games do not feature many technical or visual improvements, and that was kinda the whole point, as fans called on Activision to give them the OG experience for both, warts and all. That worked out well for Activision and Microsoft, as the games reportedly combined to sell more than 11 million copies, generating more than $430 million.

Previously, the only way to play the games on PlayStation was to find an old PS3 and go from there since they were never made available via backwards compatibility on PS4 or PS5. The pent-up demand helped bolster sales, industry analyst Rhys Elliott said. He added that Activision spent basically zero dollars to market them, nor does the company need to spend money for ongoing development.

Microsoft and Activision are the big winners here, and so is Sony–its 30% cut of the $430 million works out to about $130 million “for doing basically nothing” but hosting them, Elliott said. The games have no doubt sold more copies since Elliott released his report in early August, further enriching the parties involved.

Circana said EA Sports College Football 27, which was July's No. 2 best-selling games based on dollar sales, would have been No. 1 had that game and the EA Sports MVP Bundle been combined. That bundle includes CFB 27 and Madden 27.

Ex-PlayStation Boss Says Game Development Will Have A “Tough Future” Because Of AI

As a veteran of the industry, former PlayStation Studios boss Shuhei has a lot of thoughts about where things are currently headed. And with AI infiltrating just about every major developer under the sun, he is both fascinated by and worried about artificial intelligence's overall impact on game development. In an August 18 Gamerbraves interview(https://www.gamerbraves.com/exclusive-from-playstation-to-indie-advisor-shuhei-yoshida-talks-games-ai-and-the-future-of-the-industry/), Yoshida said AI tools are "allowing almost anybody to become a game developer." Because AI can do things like write code for you, an artist or a designer can create entire games by themselves now. This, in his mind, will lead to more games being created and released than ever before. While he praised the speed at which developers will be able to launch games with AI, Yoshida was quick to put the rose-tinted glasses away, highlighting the adverse effects it could have on gaming. "For anyone who wants to make money by developing games, we'll see even tougher competition going forward,” he said. "As a fan of games, I'm very excited about the future and seeing so many interesting games come out. But from a developer's standpoint, it's going to be a really tough future." For him, "tougher competition" is the greatest concern, as the exorbitant amount of games released will give consumers more options and probably a greater sense of decision paralysis. Yoshida also commented on PlayStation's decision to end all physical disc production in January 2028(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/playstations-disc-based-game-sales-have-dropped-dramatically-in-recent-years/), saying it may not be "such a big issue(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/former-playstation-boss-weighs-in-on-sony-killing-off-physical-game-discs/)" since physical-disc games still often require downloads, just like digital media. Still, he did acknowledge how much it'd suck if "physical games were no longer available to collect." Yoshida has been opening up about all facets of the games industry, from explaining why he was fired from his position(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/former-playstation-exec-shuhei-yoshida-says-he-was-fired-after-top-boss-asked-him-to-do-ridiculous-things/1100-6539492/) to sharing his thoughts on the Steam Machine(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/former-playstation-exec-is-less-than-impressed-with-steam-machine/). This muzzle is off.

PlayStation Is Reportedly Overhauling Live-Service Horizon Spin-Off Hunters Gathering Following Poor Playtest Feedback

!Game Informer News(https://gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/bodydefault/public/2026/02/05/a2668036/horizonhuntersgatheringaloyanderend.jpg.webp) Horizon Hunters Gathering, a live-service spin-off of Guerilla Games' Horizon series(https://gameinformer.com/2026/02/05/guerrilla-games-reveals-its-cooperative-horizon-multiplayer-game-horizon-hunters), was announced earlier this year to mixed reception. While it retains worldbuilding elements from Horizon Zero Dawn and Forbidden West, the genre and art style are completely changed, and anecdotally, it seemed to alienate more than it attracted. That was before anyone had played the game, however. According to a report from Bloomberg(https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2026-08-19/playstation-reboots-horizon-hunters-gathering-as-live-service-strategy-struggles?accessToken=eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiIsInR5cCI6IkpXVCJ9.eyJzb3VyY2UiOiJTdWJzY3JpYmVyR2lmdGVkQXJ0aWNsZSIsImlhdCI6MTc4NzE0MjM0MSwiZXhwIjoxNzg3NzQ3MTQxLCJhcnRpY2xlSWQiOiJUSzBOVElSS1YyVjUwMCIsImJjb25uZWN0SWQiOiJCMUVBQkI5NjQ2QUM0REZFQTJBRkI4MjI1MzgyQTJFQSJ9.W2rmWr4vHOvYW2YsXBRftk6tzRuk5-lCzHVi21wLDU), playtest feedback has caused the developer to take a step back and reevaluate what the game should look like. The report comes from Jason Schreier, a seasoned reporter in the video game space. He cites anonymous sources familiar with Hunters Gathering's development, but who are not authorized to speak about it publicly. While Schreier's reporting has a very strong track record for accuracy, PlayStation has yet to confirm or deny the facts in his article and declined to comment. Game Informer has also reached out for comment, and this article will be updated should we receive a reply. "Following poor feedback in private testing earlier this year, the plan now is to strip out the live-service component and turn it into more of a traditional cooperative multiplayer game with a story mode and a far smaller scope," the Bloomberg article reads. While the game is not yet cancelled, Schreier's sources indicate that the team has "through December to impress executives on their next milestone." Many of the game's developers are also being reassigned to a different project, to be evaluated at the end of the year. This rework of Hunters Gathering is a kinder fate than other multiplayer PlayStation projects have received. Best known for its critically acclaimed single-player experiences, the Japanese gaming giant has spent the 2020s trying to expand into the online live-service market to little success. Multiplayer spin-offs of God of War(https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-01-16/sony-cancels-two-more-playstation-projects), Spider-Man, and The Last of Us(https://gameinformer.com/2023/12/14/naughty-dog-ceases-development-of-the-last-of-us-online) were all canned before their proper reveals. Destiny 2 got its final update this year(https://gameinformer.com/2026/05/21/destiny-2-is-getting-its-final-content-update-next-month-as-bungie-ends-active). Most infamously, Concord was shut down less than a week after its launch. While PlayStation's single-player games have fared better, fans of the Horizon series unfortunately have to wait a while for their next single-player outing as Aloy. According to Bloomberg, most of the Horizon Forbidden West team is working on Hunters Gathering, not the next mainline entry. "A tiny team has been plotting out the next single-player Horizon game but it remains years away from completion, according to the people familiar with the studio’s plans," Schreier writes.
