Double Fine Boss Breaks Silence on 'Brütal Legend 2'

Overview & Key Takeaways

Tim Schafer confirmed that Brütal Legend 2 is not in development at Double Fine, which was recently spun off from Xbox Game Studios

If you were hoping that a new Brütal Legend game was in the works now that Double Fine is independent again, Tim Schafer unfortunately confirmed that's not the case. Instead, Double Fine plans on focusing on smaller and weirder projects for now, although Schafer seems open to making a sequel someday.

During an August 21 appearance on Kinda Funny Games Daily, Schafer was directly asked "Brütal Legend 2 when?" by someone in the stream's chat. "We're not working on that now," Schafer said in response. "But maybe someday. I mean, there's a lot there to work with. But we just, right now, we're going to make a whole bunch of crazy little weird things."

Another chatter went on to point out that a new Brütal Legend game might be tough to make because heavy metal icons like Ozzy Osbourne and Lemmy Kilmister had died. Schafer seems to think that there's room to spotlight a new generation of artists in a sequel if Double Fine ever were to make it.

"Making Brütal Legend, there's all that stuff I loved in high school, and then making the game I found out a whole bunch of other bands and stuff that I never heard of. Since then, people approach me with metal bands, so I'm always like there's always new metal bands and new legends. We still have Rob Halford still with us and Lita Ford, but we did lose Ozzy and Lemmy. I really love that you can play Brütal Legend and see this really beautiful representation of those guys... It's like this little time capsule of these legends in their prime, in their element, and stuff. So there's just always new great people we could have in the game."

Schafer seems open to working on a sequel someday, even if he's transparent about the fact that no such project is currently in the works. Instead, Double Fine fans can look forward to updates for Kiln as well as the Amnesia Fortnight 2026 - Indie Reboot Kickstarter, which will fund a game jam and documentary, in the short term. One game made during that jam will even become an officially released game, potentially the first since Double Fine was spun off from Xbox Game Studios.

Double Fine was a subsidiary of Xbox Game Studios between June 2019 and July 2026. It was one of five studios Xbox's new CEO Asha Sharma announced plans to divest from last month, writing on Xbox Wire at the time that "it is neither possible nor desirable to own every great independent studio." Double Fine laid off 23 developers in the weeks that followed, but has now regained the rights to all of its IP and is charting a new path forward for itself.

As of now, that path does not imminently include Brütal Legend 2. If you want to play the original Brütal Legend, it's easily playable on PC or through its backward compatible Xbox 360 version on Xbox One and Xbox Series X. It's even still part of the Xbox Game Pass Premium catalog.

Your Mortal Shell 2 Weapons Don’t Have To Get You Killed

Cold Symmetry's Mortal Shell 2(https://www.gamespot.com/games/mortal-shell-ii/) is finally out on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Maybe you've been bodying bosses while collecting shells and leveling up your character. Or maybe you've been getting bodied as bosses pummel you into the dirt and your weapons betray you. I can't help you with the former, but I do have some tips and tricks to alleviate the latter. When you start your Mortal Shell 2 journey, a handful of settings are on by default. A couple of these settings make your weapons an enemy magnet, which is good since you want your bullets and your swings to hit your targets. However, when you go in shooting and swinging wantonly, you may find yourself blown to smitherens--just like Redditor xkukazu50, who posted a video on August 21(https://www.reddit.com/r/MortalShell/comments/1vuddap/lovethisgamebutsomethinghastobedoneabout/) of their character getting burnt to a crisp. https://www.reddit.com/r/MortalShell/comments/1vuddap/lovethisgamebutsomethinghastobedoneabout/ The problem here, as xkukazu50 noted, is the weapon tracking. Whenever you pull out your sidearm or swing with your primary weapon, the game's technology pulls your attacks toward the nearest enemy like a vortex. But if you tweak some settings, your life will be made a lot easier. Make your Mortal Shell 2 weapons fight for you. Press pause, toggle over to "Game" in the Settings menu, and check out the "Target Steering" and "Enable Free Aim" options. "Target Steering," which is set to "Default," makes your melee attacks prioritize the nearest enemy you're aiming at. Changing this setting to "Light" or "Off" makes your melee attacks much less sticky so that you can swing at whatever you want without getting sucked to the closest enemy--or environmental hazard--you're looking at. "Enable Free Aim" is exactly what it sounds like. Set to "No" by default, it automatically locks your reticle onto the nearest enemy you point your gun at. If you change this to "Yes," then you can freely aim your gun without that snappy auto-lock on, but if you press the right trigger in with "Enable Free Aim" on, you can still lock onto a target and change your target's lock. That way, you won't accidentally shoot an explosive barrel or something like that. Outside of this, there are two more settings I recommend you change in Mortal Shell 2. The first is setting the "Auto Pick Up Gold" option to "Yes" to save your thumb from breaking the interact button--A on Xbox or X on PlayStation--on your controller, since you'll be picking up gold all the time. The second is changing the "Camera Style" from Immersive to Action, which pulls the camera farther back so you can see more on the screen. This gives you a greater field of view; that way, you know what's coming. There are many more settings to test as you whoop ass or get your ass whooped in Mortal Shell 2. However, these are the handful of settings I suggest you change to make your combat feel more responsive as you tackle the game's very gross bosses.
