TPC reveals a wide variety of new illustrations for the 30th anniversary set, from tragic takes on Pikachu to deeply silly renditions of the mascot

30 years ago, illustrator Ken Sugimori delighted the world with his chubby rendition of Pokémon's iconic mascot. Over the years, Pikachu's design has shed its baby fat in favor of a more svelte look. For the Pokémon trading card game's 30th anniversary, Sugimori has offered a new take on the electric rodent's classic design. The new Fat Pikachu silhouette just isn't landing for some fans, though.

The new Pikachu, pictured above, looks fine at first. Some aspects of its design, like the freakish left claw present in the original '90s version, are arguably an improvement. The problem only becomes noticeable when you compare both designs side by side. While the new Sugimori art retains its plump shape, Pikachu's body is slimmer than its predecessor. Nu-Pikachu isn't fatter, it just has a bizarrely large head that is disproportionate to the rest of its body. Classic Fat Pikachu, on the other hand, maintains a harmonious cherubic ratio.

In social media posts sharing the official artwork, commenters often say the new Pikachu has a whiff of AI to it. People aren't accusing Sugimori of cutting corners. Fans seem to be using the term AI as a shorthand for Pikachu's uncanny effect. The mascot looks like it's supposed to, but it's also completely wrong.

Ken Sugimori's updated card is one of 30 Pikachu designs that will be available as a part of the set coming on Sept. 16. As the date approaches, The Pokémon Company is slowly doling out more official artwork for the collection — and the variety is fantastic. Shimari Yukichi's gluttonous Pikachu picks up on the spirit of Fat Pikachu in a card where the yellow mouse can be seen gorging on a variety of berries. Appropriately, the 28th card of the Pikachu collection has a move called Satisfied Spark.

The standout of the bunch has to be sowsow's deceptively cute Pikachu card. This Pikachu is frowning while clutching a pillow resembling a Friend Ball. In the background, there's a picture of a Pichu holding the hand of a young trainer who is just out of frame. The sad Pikachu has one ear tilted downward, and it comes packed with a move called Lonely Gaze. Pitifully, the depressed Pikachu's single move only hits for 20 health points. Tacitly acknowledging that only a total monster would attack this poor baby, sowsow's card has an ability that reduces enemy attacks by 20 damage as well.

Fortnite's Upcoming Season Includes Crossovers With Iconic Games Like Sonic, Mega Man, Persona, and Kingdom Hearts

!Game Informer News(https://gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/bodydefault/public/2026/08/17/a7d19c04/chapter7season4overrideofficialtrailer0-32screenshot.jpg.webp) Fortnite's newest season, Override, begins on August 20, and yesterday's trailer confirmed the new map and battle pass will be centered on a wide range of video game crossovers. The most notable inclusion is Sonic the Hedgehog; he'll be playable as a skin (stretched to fit Fortnite's standard proportions), and elements of Green Hill Zone will appear on the map. The new footage shows Jonesy running fast enough to go upside-down on one of the series' staple gravity-defying loops. However, Sonic is just the tip of the iceberg in Chapter 7, Season 4 of Fortnite. In addition to other characters from his universe, including Tails, Dr. Eggman, and Shadow, the trailer also includes glimpses of Mega Man, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro the Dragon(https://gameinformer.com/xbox-games-showcase/2026/06/07/spyro-a-realm-beyond-is-a-brand-new-spyro-adventure), Joker from Persona 5, and giant Tetris blocks that fall from the sky. Key art released by the official Fortnite account also shows glimpses of Pac-Man and Sora from Kingdom Hearts (who we recently saw a lot of in the new D23 footage(https://gameinformer.com/2026/08/17/kingdom-hearts-iv-gets-2027-launch-window-coco-world-reveal-kingdom-hearts-anime)). Meanwhile, it looks like other characters who have appeared as skins in past seasons, like Master Chief, Geralt, Ryu, and Lara Croft, are also returning (to the battle shop). !Game Informer News(https://gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/bodydefault/public/2026/08/17/ab1eeeff/fortniteoverride.jpg.webp)(https://gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/nocompression/public/2026/08/17/ab1eeeff/fortniteoverride.jpg.webp) Gameplay-wise, the trailer also shows a backpack-based power-up system, where wearing items associated with characters like Sonic or Tails gives you the powers of speed or flight, respectively. We also see weapons like Mega Man's arm cannon and the 8-bit shotgun, the latter of which seems to track the player's score. The trailer concludes with a glimpse of Geno, a major villain in Fortnite's lore who will presumably be appearing as a boss for players to battle. You can check out the full trailer below: Fortnite's Chapter 7, Season 4 Override begins on August 20, and you can play it on basically every platform you can think of: PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch 2, PS4, Xbox One, Switch, PC, iOS, and Android.
