Nintendo Just Teased a Big Story Twist for 'Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave' in New Trailer

Overview & Key Takeaways

Eagle-eyed fans took to social media to point out that a time-skip could be featured in Nintendo's latest Fire Emblem game.

As the release of Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave approaches, more answers are emerging from Intelligent Systems' and Nintendo's latest Fire Emblem title. Is Fortune's Weave a sequel, prequel, or neither? What role do the Nabateans and Agarthans play here? Why the heck are guns considered gauntlets? Does Leda kiss girls?

All equally important questions, but the latest Fire Emblem trailer from Japan might have unintentionally answered another that's been on fans' minds: will Fortune's Weave have a time skip?

Many Fire Emblem games have featured time-related mechanics. The most notable is Fire Emblem: Three Houses, which featured a five-year time-skip that occurs after players finished the Monastery section, and followed protagonist Byleth returning to see that their students from the Black Eagles, the Blue Lions, and/or the Golden Deer house had all grown up in their absence. It was heartwarming, and gave us great new designs for all our favorite Three Houses characters.

It hasn't yet been officially confirmed whether this is the case for Fortune's Weave, but if you linger on the gameplay shown via the game's latest trailer, you'll notice in the portion where the player avatar character is fighting off the dark forces in the future, that they are joined by several different characters.

A character that stands out among them is Cai, who is sitting on a horse and wielding a lance. At first glance, he doesn't look all that different, but at a closer look, his arms are larger and, even on a horse, he looks much taller. His hair, too, is noticeably different. It isn't just Cai, however. Dietrich, known for his luscious locks and spiky armor, stands a little taller with his hair cropped. The only way we recognized him in any way is because of his sword, a Heroes' Relic.

Now there could be another explanation for these changes in appearance: different class outfits. If Fortune's Weave is like every other Fire Emblem game out there, a character can have their look changed depending on what class they choose. A brawler in Three Houses will wear almost a caveman set-up, while a fortress knight wears clunky armor and wields a big shield.

However, changing classes only changes outfits — not hairstyles. This leads us to believe that a time-skip may indeed be in Fortune's Weave. We're not the only ones who think that either: several users on Reddit have also discussed that the battle shown in the trailer has highlighted several different designs for Fortune's Weave's characters. Why have a change in character design, if not for a time-skip?

Until we get Fortune's Weave in our hands, it's impossible to know whether we'll receive an actual time-skip or not. But, from what we've seen so far? Things are looking very good for fans who were hoping that was the case.

Fortnite's Upcoming Season Includes Crossovers With Iconic Games Like Sonic, Mega Man, Persona, and Kingdom Hearts

!Game Informer News(https://gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/bodydefault/public/2026/08/17/a7d19c04/chapter7season4overrideofficialtrailer0-32screenshot.jpg.webp) Fortnite's newest season, Override, begins on August 20, and yesterday's trailer confirmed the new map and battle pass will be centered on a wide range of video game crossovers. The most notable inclusion is Sonic the Hedgehog; he'll be playable as a skin (stretched to fit Fortnite's standard proportions), and elements of Green Hill Zone will appear on the map. The new footage shows Jonesy running fast enough to go upside-down on one of the series' staple gravity-defying loops. However, Sonic is just the tip of the iceberg in Chapter 7, Season 4 of Fortnite. In addition to other characters from his universe, including Tails, Dr. Eggman, and Shadow, the trailer also includes glimpses of Mega Man, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro the Dragon(https://gameinformer.com/xbox-games-showcase/2026/06/07/spyro-a-realm-beyond-is-a-brand-new-spyro-adventure), Joker from Persona 5, and giant Tetris blocks that fall from the sky. Key art released by the official Fortnite account also shows glimpses of Pac-Man and Sora from Kingdom Hearts (who we recently saw a lot of in the new D23 footage(https://gameinformer.com/2026/08/17/kingdom-hearts-iv-gets-2027-launch-window-coco-world-reveal-kingdom-hearts-anime)). Meanwhile, it looks like other characters who have appeared as skins in past seasons, like Master Chief, Geralt, Ryu, and Lara Croft, are also returning (to the battle shop). !Game Informer News(https://gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/bodydefault/public/2026/08/17/ab1eeeff/fortniteoverride.jpg.webp)(https://gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/nocompression/public/2026/08/17/ab1eeeff/fortniteoverride.jpg.webp) Gameplay-wise, the trailer also shows a backpack-based power-up system, where wearing items associated with characters like Sonic or Tails gives you the powers of speed or flight, respectively. We also see weapons like Mega Man's arm cannon and the 8-bit shotgun, the latter of which seems to track the player's score. The trailer concludes with a glimpse of Geno, a major villain in Fortnite's lore who will presumably be appearing as a boss for players to battle. You can check out the full trailer below: Fortnite's Chapter 7, Season 4 Override begins on August 20, and you can play it on basically every platform you can think of: PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch 2, PS4, Xbox One, Switch, PC, iOS, and Android.
