Dead Cells studio thanks Guillermo del Toro for playing its game, gently suggests he try the easy mode

Overview & Key Takeaways

We've all been there.

In a July 29 IGN interview, prolific director Guillermo del Toro shared his love of the hardcore action-roguelike, Dead Cells, but lamented its difficulty, wishing there was a mode that eased up on the roguelike restarts. Dead Cells studio Motion Twin has since responded to IGN, and recommends del Toro try the easy mode it's already got in there.

"We'd like to officially add this moment into our own personal Cabinet of Curiosities," the studio told IGN. "We are surprised and truly honored to see that Mr. del Toro is a Dead Cells player, and we can even help him right now: there is an Assist mode in the game!

"This mode lets you resurrect at the start of the current biome or closest checkpoint, rather than restarting the entire run. Thank you very much Guillermo for your kind words and your time on the game. We hope this little message will help you!"

Assist mode kinda sounds like exactly what del Toro was asking for: "You get 35 levels in and then you start again, you get faster, but please do a version without respawning for the elderly players." We could be mistaken, but I and PCG news writer Elie Gould interpreted his complaint to be directed at the roguelike genre's consequences on death: Losing all your stuff and the map getting randomized. Hopefully the director will find what he's looking for in Assist mode.

And lest you judge del Toro too harshly for not catching Assist mode before going on the record about it, a frequent, recurring Google query we've noticed in our eternal quest for SEO succor is "How do I save in [X new videogame]," a question usually answered with "pause the game, then hit the 'save' button." None of us are free from sin. There are (almost) no dumb questions.
