Dungeons & Dragons and World of Warcraft crossover leaks ahead of Gen Con

Polygon RSS FeedCorey Plante3 min read(28 days ago)

Overview & Key Takeaways

A now-deleted blog post from Roll20 has seemingly leaked an impending announcement for a major D&D crossover.

A deleted Roll20 blog post seemingly revealed an official crossover between Dungeons & Dragons and World of Warcraft ahead of a planned announcement, presumably at Gen Con 2026 next week. EN World first reported that Roll20 briefly published a post declaring that preorders for “D&D World of Warcraft” were live, accompanied by promotional artwork featuring the two franchises’ logos. Although Roll20 quickly removed the post, its preview and imagery remained accessible for a short time afterward.

Neither Wizards of the Coast nor Blizzard Entertainment has officially announced the project, and it remains unclear what form the crossover will take. But the apparent leak arrives less than a week before Gen Con, where D&D is expected to reveal more about its future during a keynote presentation on July 30.

Polygon has reached out to Wizards of the Coast for comment and will update this story when we hear back.

World of Warcraft has technically dipped into D&D before, albeit unofficially. Warcraft: The Roleplaying Game was released in 2003 using the Open Game License with rules derived from D&D’s third edition. It was followed in 2005 by World of Warcraft: The Roleplaying Game, which used revised 3.5 rules. Both were published by White Wolf’s Sword & Sorcery Studios rather than Wizards of the Coast.

A new release would therefore mark Warcraft’s first major tabletop role-playing game in more than 20 years — and potentially one of D&D’s most substantial crossovers to date. 5th Edition has previously ventured into licensed universes with products based on Stranger Things and Rick and Morty, but those releases were primarily boxed starter sets and adventures rather than full-fledged campaign settings. There have also been crossovers between D&D and Magic: The Gathering in the form of sourcebooks like Guildmaster's Guide to Ravnica (2018), Mythic Odysseys of Theros (2020), and Strixhaven: Curriculum of Chaos (2021) — but both of those properties are within the Wizards of the Coast ecosystem.

The apparent World of Warcraft collaboration suggests that D&D is moving toward a crossover-heavy strategy similar to Magic: The Gathering, in which Universes Beyond has explored franchises like Final Fantasy, The Lord of the Rings, and Marvel Comics. While Universes Beyond has proven a bit contentious among fans of Magic, some of its most successful crossover sets have been those that focus on fantasy that's similar to the core Magic multiverse. Compare that to the potential crossover we're looking at, and the high fantasy setting presented in World of Warcraft seems like a natural fit for D&D.

In a May interview with Games Radar, Hasbro CEO essentially confirmed that D&D crossovers of this nature were in the pipeline.

"I don't want to take away any headlines from the D&D team," Cocks said. "But I think you can definitely expect more crossovers inside of D&D. I mean, we've had such a fantastic experience with [crossovers] with Magic: The Gathering. D&D is a fantastic play system that I think is very open-ended. You already have a fairly wide spectrum with things like Spelljammer to Curse of Strahd. So you already kind of have the DNA for it handled inside the system."

For now, Roll20’s now-deleted post provides little more than a name and confirmation that preorders are presumably planned. We’ll likely find out exactly what “D&D World of Warcraft” entails when Gen Con begins on Thursday.

CoD: MW4 DLC Honors Real-Life Medal Of Honor Recipient Who Lost His Eye And Teeth In Grenade Blast

Activision has announced that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 will have day-one DLC, and like in years past, it will focus on a real-life military hero, with proceeds going to charity. The Call of Duty Endowment Valor Pack, launching on October 23 alongside the game, adds the real-life Medal of Honor recipient Kyle Carpenter to the game as a playable character. Carpenter was in Marjah, Afghanistan, when, on November 21, 2010, he put himself in front of a grenade to help save the life of his fellow Marine, Nick Eufrazio. Carpenter sustained serious injuries from the grenade blast. He was unconscious for five weeks, had his teeth stripped from his mouth, and lost an eye. He sustained numerous other life-threatening injuries in the blast. Carpenter received the Medal of Honor from President Barack Obama in 2014. "No matter how wrecked your world gets, the world keeps spinning," Carpenter said in the video below. https://twitter.com/CODE4Vets/status/2090856990872650127 The Call of Duty Endowment is Activision's charity that supports military veterans and specifically helping soldiers find jobs after leaving the service. Proceeds from this new Valor Pack will benefit the endowment. There have been numerous other DLC packs for Call of Duty games supporting the endowment. A previous DLC pack for Black Ops 7 brought the real-life soldier Chris Cassidy to the game(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/real-life-soldier-chris-cassidy-is-coming-to-call-of-duty-in-a-charity-bundle/1100-6539766/); he was among those hunting down Osama bin Laden immediately after 9/11, and then he became a NASA astronaut. Modern Warfare 4 launches on October 23, but the game's beta is going on right now for those who preordered the game(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/cod-modern-warfare-4-aims-for-fast-and-fluid-movement-but-a-classic-mode-isnt-off-the-table/). An open beta for everyone will be held August 28-September 1.
