Star Trek reboot writers Daley and Goldstein announce the film will look even further into the future

The big Star Trek Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con isn't until tomorrow, July 25, but fans are already getting exciting updates on the franchise's future. During the Directors on Directing panel, the team behind the next Star Trek feature film dropped some of the first details on what to expect from the highly anticipated reboot.

The panel, which was hosted by Collider's Steven Weintraub, included Resident Evil director Zach Cregger as well as writing duo Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley. Goldstein and Daley (Spider-Man: Homecoming, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves) were announced as the writers behind Paramount Skydance's next Star Trek film last November, but details on the project have been scarce. Weintraub almost immediately asked for an update on the project.

Goldstein and Daley said the script is in progress and shared that fans shouldn't expect to see any familiar faces from the franchise in their reboot. Past Star Trek films have either seen the cast of shows like The Original Series and The Next Generation return to reprise their roles, or have recast iconic characters with new actors, such as in J.J. Abrams' Kelvin timeline. However, what's most interesting is what the duo said about the film's setting. Goldstein revealed that the next Star Trek film will take place "further in the future than we've been before."

Star Trek is itself set in our own future, but has been pushed further and further depending on what series or film we are talking about. If Goldstein includes the recent shows Discovery and Starfleet Academy, the furthest Star Trek has ever gone into the future is the 32nd Century. Reaching that distant time period involved time-travel shenanigans. If Goldstein and Daley ignore that, then Star Trek has only reached the 24th Century.

Whichever definition the writing duo decides upon, it sets the stage for a reinvention of the series that could honor the past while still allowing for a fresh start. Hopefully, tomorrow's Hall H panel will give even more insight into what the future of Star Trek holds.

CoD: MW4 DLC Honors Real-Life Medal Of Honor Recipient Who Lost His Eye And Teeth In Grenade Blast

Activision has announced that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 will have day-one DLC, and like in years past, it will focus on a real-life military hero, with proceeds going to charity. The Call of Duty Endowment Valor Pack, launching on October 23 alongside the game, adds the real-life Medal of Honor recipient Kyle Carpenter to the game as a playable character. Carpenter was in Marjah, Afghanistan, when, on November 21, 2010, he put himself in front of a grenade to help save the life of his fellow Marine, Nick Eufrazio. Carpenter sustained serious injuries from the grenade blast. He was unconscious for five weeks, had his teeth stripped from his mouth, and lost an eye. He sustained numerous other life-threatening injuries in the blast. Carpenter received the Medal of Honor from President Barack Obama in 2014. "No matter how wrecked your world gets, the world keeps spinning," Carpenter said in the video below. https://twitter.com/CODE4Vets/status/2090856990872650127 The Call of Duty Endowment is Activision's charity that supports military veterans and specifically helping soldiers find jobs after leaving the service. Proceeds from this new Valor Pack will benefit the endowment. There have been numerous other DLC packs for Call of Duty games supporting the endowment. A previous DLC pack for Black Ops 7 brought the real-life soldier Chris Cassidy to the game(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/real-life-soldier-chris-cassidy-is-coming-to-call-of-duty-in-a-charity-bundle/1100-6539766/); he was among those hunting down Osama bin Laden immediately after 9/11, and then he became a NASA astronaut. Modern Warfare 4 launches on October 23, but the game's beta is going on right now for those who preordered the game(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/cod-modern-warfare-4-aims-for-fast-and-fluid-movement-but-a-classic-mode-isnt-off-the-table/). An open beta for everyone will be held August 28-September 1.
