Indiana Jones returns with new series set after Raiders of the Lost Ark

Overview & Key Takeaways

Marvel Comics' The Sword of Pandemonium will take place after Raiders of the Lost Ark and is penned by Thor legend Jason Aaron.

The Lucasfilm Publishing panel at San Diego Comic-Con was, not too surprisingly, filled with announcements about upcoming Star Wars projects from Marvel. Unexpectedly, however, the panel also revealed that Indiana Jones would be getting his first Marvel Comics series in over three decades.

Marvel Comics editor-in-chief C.B. Cebulski revealed Indiana Jones and the Sword of Pandemonium during the July 24 panel. The comic will be a limited five-issue series from multi-Eisner-Award-winning writer Jason Aaron and artist Aaron Kuder. Aaron is best known for his seminal yearslong Thor saga that included the creation of Gorr the God Butcher and the introduction of Jane Foster as the wielder of Mjölnir. His work also includes an acclaimed run in Star Wars comics, Wolverine and the X-Men, and the creator-owned series Southern Bastards. Kuder's interior artwork has been featured in Action Comics, Daredevil, and The Fantastic Four, among others.

Marvel said that this new series will kick off an all-new era of comic book adventures for Indy, suggesting more to come if sales justify it. Here's the official synopsis of the limited series:

In the wake of Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark, Indy's most notorious villains, including the impossible return of an archenemy, seek a terrifying new source of power to recoup their loss—one that's fallen into the hands of his former companion, Marion Ravenwood. Now, Indiana Jones has to race to the far corners of the globe in search of a biblical weapon, embarking on an epic quest that will put both his archeology skills and skepticism of the supernatural to the ultimate test!

In an official news release, Marvel also noted that this next chapter of Indiana Jones comics will be set alongside the original films. That is at least true of Sword of Pandemonium. One interesting aspect of the synopsis is the reference to Marion Ravenwood as Indy's former companion. The pair appear to be on good terms after Raiders of the Lost Ark; the synopsis raises the question of what might disrupt that relationship. Marvel previously published The Further Adventures of Indiana Jones in the 1980s, which was also set around the timeframe of the original films. It is unknown if Sword of Pandemonium will acknowledge that series as canonical to the new adventure or ignore it completely.

Indiana Jones and the Sword of Pandemonium is set to be released this December.

CoD: MW4 DLC Honors Real-Life Medal Of Honor Recipient Who Lost His Eye And Teeth In Grenade Blast

Activision has announced that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 will have day-one DLC, and like in years past, it will focus on a real-life military hero, with proceeds going to charity. The Call of Duty Endowment Valor Pack, launching on October 23 alongside the game, adds the real-life Medal of Honor recipient Kyle Carpenter to the game as a playable character. Carpenter was in Marjah, Afghanistan, when, on November 21, 2010, he put himself in front of a grenade to help save the life of his fellow Marine, Nick Eufrazio. Carpenter sustained serious injuries from the grenade blast. He was unconscious for five weeks, had his teeth stripped from his mouth, and lost an eye. He sustained numerous other life-threatening injuries in the blast. Carpenter received the Medal of Honor from President Barack Obama in 2014. "No matter how wrecked your world gets, the world keeps spinning," Carpenter said in the video below. https://twitter.com/CODE4Vets/status/2090856990872650127 The Call of Duty Endowment is Activision's charity that supports military veterans and specifically helping soldiers find jobs after leaving the service. Proceeds from this new Valor Pack will benefit the endowment. There have been numerous other DLC packs for Call of Duty games supporting the endowment. A previous DLC pack for Black Ops 7 brought the real-life soldier Chris Cassidy to the game(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/real-life-soldier-chris-cassidy-is-coming-to-call-of-duty-in-a-charity-bundle/1100-6539766/); he was among those hunting down Osama bin Laden immediately after 9/11, and then he became a NASA astronaut. Modern Warfare 4 launches on October 23, but the game's beta is going on right now for those who preordered the game(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/cod-modern-warfare-4-aims-for-fast-and-fluid-movement-but-a-classic-mode-isnt-off-the-table/). An open beta for everyone will be held August 28-September 1.
