Xbox’s Console Future Looks Bleak In New Industry Forecast🎮 PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, Xbox, Multi-platform

Xbox’s Console Future Looks Bleak In New Industry Forecast

Next year could be a grim one for Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft, as console sales are expected to dramatically decline in 2027 by almost 20%. Thanks to component shortages, video game consoles like the Switch 2, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S have only gotten more expensive over time--a complete reversal of how systems used to get cheaper the longer they were on the market. According to a report from S&P Global Market Intelligence Kagan (via GamesIndustry.Biz(https://www.gamesindustry.biz/analyst-game-console-shipments-expected-to-decline-195-to-339m-units-in-2026)), the math is simple: more expensive machines(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/ps5-xbox-and-switch-2-heres-how-their-prices-have-changed-since-launch/), fewer consumers able to buy them. The firm is predicting that console shipments will fall to about 27.1 million units by 2027, but it could recover to 37.4 million units by 2030 if the component crisis begins to stabilize by 2028. This would allow Sony and Microsoft to release their next-gen consoles--the PS6(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/playstation-6-everything-we-know-about-sonys-next-generation-console/1100-6533561/) and Project Helix(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/next-xbox-release-date-specs-display-price/1100-6525379/), respectively--and S&P Global Market Intelligence analyst Neil Barbour projected that the consoles will sell for between $600 and $800 each. "For now, the market faces a compounding problem: hardware that is either too old or too expensive for the median consumer, a software slate that is thin outside a handful of tentpole releases, and a macro environment that keeps any meaningful price relief off the table," Barbour said to GamesIndustry.Biz. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4FatSqS3VYY For the Switch 2, S&P has forecast that it'll sell 17.1 million units in 2026, while Nintendo's own expectations have sales pegged at 16.5 million units sold in the console's second fiscal year. That would make for a decline of 16.9% compared to its launch year(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/nintendo-switch-2-continues-to-be-a-massive-hit-selling-over-10-million-units-in-six-months/1100-6535903/), but it's not just the looming $50 price hike in September(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/the-nintendo-switch-2-is-officially-getting-a-price-hike-in-september/1100-6539854/) contributing to this. S&P believes that the lack of a killer game for 2026 is hindering Switch 2 sales, although the launch of Pokemon Winds and Waves(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/pokemon-winds-and-waves-release-date-gameplay-and-everything-we-know-so-far/1100-6538522/) in 2027 could see a spike in sales. Nintendo is also rumored to be exploring an OLED version of the Switch 2(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/nintendo-exploring-a-switch-2-oled-but-is-worried-about-price-report/), but the potential price for it is said to be a topic of concern at the company. As for the PS5, recent price hikes(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/ps5-price-increase-confirmed-by-sony-amid-market-pressures/1100-6539060/) haven't helped the console improve its recent sales, either. S&P's forecast is a 15.2% decrease year-on-year, with Sony likely shipping 13.2 million units in 2026--a big drop compared to how Sony shipped 17.1 million PS5s in 2025. Xbox could be hardest hit, as the outlook doesn't look positive for the Microsoft gaming division. S&P says that Microsoft shipped 3.2 million Xbox Series X|S consoles last year--a figure that Microsoft has never publicly revealed, as it's notoriously cagey with sales numbers--and that was the lowest annual total to date. S&P predicts 2.5 million Xbox Series X|S units will be sold in 2026, followed by "a rapid wind-down toward zero" as it prepares for a next-gen console launch. With Project Helix expected to be expensive due to its ability to support both console and PC marketplaces, S&P has forecast launch-year sales of 2 million units, reaching roughly 7.3 million units by 2030. Barbour added that the sales outcome could look different, and that S&P is "splitting the difference" between a traditional Xbox console successor and a living-room PC that has been given an Xbox certification. That 2028 launch year for next-gen consoles is looking more solid--although anything can change in these turbulent times--as court documents(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/next-console-generation-may-start-in-2028-xbox-court-docs-say/1100-6515423/) and statements(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/sony-mentions-ps6-release-year-if-only-this-document-werent-redacted/1100-6509450/) have the expected starting period of the next generation of consoles penciled in for 2028.

Nintendo Exploring A Switch 2 OLED, But Is Worried About Price – Report🍄 Nintendo Switch, Multi-platform

Nintendo Exploring A Switch 2 OLED, But Is Worried About Price – Report

From the moment the current Nintendo Switch 2 launched with its LCD screen there have been questions around whether or not Nintendo would release an OLED version in the future. It's the strategy it followed with the original Switch to great success, but could still be a while away for its follow-up. According to a report by ZDNet Korea(https://zdnet.co.kr/view/?no=20260713182948) (via Digital Foundry(https://www.digitalfoundry.net/news/2026/07/report-nintendo-mulling-switch-2-oled-with-samsung-display-panel)), Nintendo could be looking at an upcoming 1080p OLED panel from Samsung Display as an option for the potential Switch 2 OLED. The concern currently, according to the report, is not with the hardware itself, but the potential premium the upgrade would demand, and whether consumers will be willing to purchase an even more expensive console in today's memory-strapped market. Nintendo has already announced plans to increase the price of the current LCD Nintendo Switch 2(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/the-nintendo-switch-2-is-officially-getting-a-price-hike-in-september/1100-6539854/), and there's no guarantee that it won't have to hike the price further in the near future. That makes a potential Switch 2 OLED releasing in 2028 at the earliest a difficult product to predict, and even tricker to try and price before development kicks off by the end of this year. An OLED panel would present a big upgrade over the current LCD panel, which is ill-equipped for the Switch 2's more capable hardware. Its HDR capabilities are sorely lacking, and its distractingly-bad motion clarity has been a sore point for many users, especially those migrating over from the inky blacks and smooth response times of the older Nintendo Switch OLED. While 2028 is far away, Nintendo is planning to launch a new version of the Switch 2 in the European Union(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/switch-2-is-getting-a-consumer-friendly-upgrade-in-europe/) soon, which will feature a replaceable battery in order to comply with it latest consumer regulations. As a result, it will also discontinue the original Switch in the region.

Square Enix Once Again Skips Switch 2 Upgrade Path For Octopath Traveler Collection🍄 Nintendo Switch, Multi-platform

Square Enix Once Again Skips Switch 2 Upgrade Path For Octopath Traveler Collection

The Octopath Traveler(https://www.gamespot.com/games/octopath-traveler/) games established a new line of "HD-2D" games at Square Enix, and fans of the series can look forward to a new Switch 2 release of the first two entries in the series--with a catch. While Octopath Traveler and its sequel have been available on the original Switch for years now, there'll be no upgrade option for players to continue their journey on Switch 2, meaning no discount or transfer their saves across. Both games are lengthy experiences, full of optional detours and challenging quests, so starting from scratch isn't a tempting proposition. Throw in the fact that they still look pretty great for their age thanks to the timeless HD-2D design, making it likely that current players could skip the Switch 2 editions. https://youtu.be/CbWT5KUr3FU While numerous Switch games offer upgrade packs(https://www.gamespot.com/gallery/every-game-getting-switch-2-edition-enhanced-versions/2900-6398/) for their Switch 2 editions--some free, others costing a few bucks--the lack of one for Octopath Traveler could make it a very hard sell for fans of the RPG series. Some people online have labeled this as an anti-consumer move on Square Enix's part, as this move rules out the idea of purchasing a cheap secondhand copy of Octopath Traveler and grabbing the upgrade. It also doesn't allow for anyone who purchased the game previously--digitally or physically--to cheaply upgrade. Square Enix has been in hot water in the past for offering zero upgrade paths for several of its HD-2D games. Octopath Traveler 0(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/octopath-traveler-0-wont-even-let-you-pay-to-upgrade-from-switch-to-switch-2/1100-6533602/) and the physical versions(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/upcoming-dragon-quest-remakes-wont-upgrade-from-switch-to-switch-2/1100-6533168/) of Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake all required players to commit to one Switch platform to play them, choosing either a last-gen or a current-gen version. If you are planning to get Octopath Traveler 1 and 2 for Switch 2--and you're jumping in for the first time--there are some nice technical upgrades in this version. The package will be available in both digital and physical editions, with improved frame rates and resolutions on Switch 2 when it launches on October 1.

The First Two Octopath Traveler Games Are Coming To Switch 2 In October, But There's No Upgrade Path Or Save Data Transfer🍄 Nintendo Switch, Multi-platform

The First Two Octopath Traveler Games Are Coming To Switch 2 In October, But There's No Upgrade Path Or Save Data Transfer

!Octopath Traveler II(https://www.gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/bodydefault/public/2023/02/15/c434e257/ot4.jpg.webp) Octopath Traveler and Octopath Traveler II are coming to Switch 2 on October 1. The move coincides with the series 8th anniversary. Both games will be available separately, digitally and physically, as well as in a digital-only bundle.  Octopath Traveler and Octopath Traveler II, first released in 2018 and 2023, respectively, feature improved frame rates and resolutions on Switch 2. Unfortunately, reading the fine print of the announcement trailer states that if you own the original Switch versions of these HD-2D RPGs, Square Enix is not offering an upgrade path for the Switch 2 editions. Furthermore, save data is not compatible between the two versions, meaning you cannot transfer a Switch save to the Switch 2 version, and vice versa. A New Update For The Adventures Of Elliot: The Millennium Tales Fixes The Game's Most Annoying Feature🎮 PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, Xbox, Multi-platform

A New Update For The Adventures Of Elliot: The Millennium Tales Fixes The Game's Most Annoying Feature

!The Adventures of Elliot The Millennium Tales HD-2D Team Asano Square Enix PS5 Xbox Series X/S PC Steam Nintendo Switch 2(https://www.gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/bodydefault/public/2026/07/10/ecb13f14/adventuresofelliotheader.jpg.webp) Octopath Traveler(https://www.gameinformer.com/review/octopath-traveler/an-arduous-but-rewarding-journey) series developer Team Asano launched(https://www.gameinformer.com/nintendo-direct/2026/02/05/the-adventures-of-elliot-the-millennium-tales-arrives-in-june) its HD-2D action RPG, The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales(https://www.gameinformer.com/product/the-adventures-of-elliot-the-millennium-tales), last month on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC. Though many are enjoying the game, there is near-universal agreement that Faie, the companion fairy that accompanies Elliot on his adventure, talks way too much. A new update released today across all platforms lets you turn off Faie's voice completely, providing a fix for the game's most annoying feature. The Adventures of Elliot is, no doubt, aiming to be a Zelda-like adventure, and Faie can be seen as a stand-in for Navi. Despite general grievances with Link's fairy in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, you'd be hard-pressed to find someone who finds Navi to be more talkative than Faie. Team Asano was seemingly aware of Faie's communication style, giving players the option to tone down how often she speaks in the game's options – which was available from the jump. However, listening to player feedback since the game's launch, today's 1.1.0 update allows you to completely turn off Faie's voice. The update's patch notes(https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/3483510/view/680754149992695962?l=english) are short and sweet. In addition to adding an option to turn off Faie's voice, this update also "adjusts tutorial behavior," fixes FPS drops on some PCs when Faie is present, and fixes some minor bugs. The update is available to download right now on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC. In the meantime, read Game Informer's review of The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales(https://www.gameinformer.com/review/the-adventures-of-elliot-the-millennium-tales/history-repeats-itself) to learn why we enjoyed the game, despite Faie's insistence on preventing any and all silence.
