Netflix Closes Two More Studios

Earlier this summer, Netflix-owned developer Night School released Unhinged(https://www.gamespot.com/games/unhinged/), a horror game that was playable on televisions/screens through the streaming app. Unhinged was met with acclaim(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/you-can-play-oxenfrees-devs-new-game-unhinged-in-30-minutes-and-it-rules/) by players, and Netflix co-CEO Greg Peters recently called Unhinged one of "our two most successful cloud game debuts" during an investor call(https://s22.q4cdn.com/959853165/files/docfinancials/2026/q2/Netflix-Inc-Earnings-Call2026-07-16T000000English-1.pdf). Regardless, Night School has been shuttered by Netflix's latest round of cuts. As reported by Game File(https://www.gamefile.news/p/netflix-closes-night-school-moonloot), Night School and Moonloot are the latest gaming developers to be closed down by Netflix. According to the outlet, Netflix justified the closures by noting that the streamer is narrowing its focus to games for kids, party games, story-driven titles, or "games with mainstream hooks." "We see an opportunity to be more focused in our execution, so we are making organizational changes to the business to match those priorities," said Netflix in a statement to Game File. "Games continue to be an opportunity for us to expand the variety of entertainment we offer Netflix members." This isn't the first time that Netflix has made gaming cuts at one of its developers after praising its work. Earlier this month, Netflix laid off 85% of the staff(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/this-game-was-labeled-a-success-its-developer-laid-off-85-of-staff-2-months-after-release/) of Refactor Games, the developer behind a FIFA World Cup title(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/fifa-world-cup-game-coming-to-netflix-with-updates-based-on-how-the-tournament-goes/) that Netflix identified as the other most-successful cloud game debut alongside Unhinged. In July, Netflix boasted that its gaming engagement had gone up 600%(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/netflix-says-part-of-its-games-business-is-up-600-but-its-still-early-days/) from the previous year. While Netflix has previously shared its ambition for a larger stake in the gaming world(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/netflix-reveals-its-vision-for-gaming-and-teases-interesting-releases-coming-this-year/1100-6539467/), the company was notably uninterested in purchasing Warner Bros.' gaming assets(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/games-werent-a-big-part-of-netflixs-attempted-wb-takeover/1100-6536812/) before the proposed sale fell through and Paramount emerged as the winning suitor. Another report indicated that Netflix considered buying EA(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/netflix-considered-buying-ea-report/1100-6536751/), one of the largest third-party gaming publishers. EA was later sold to a group(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/ea-has-officially-been-sold-and-what-comes-next-could-be-painful/) that includes Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund and taken private.

Netflix Closes Two Gaming Studios, Including Oxenfree Developer Night School

!Game Informer News(https://gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/bodydefault/public/2022/06/10/eab54e04/oxenfreeii-03-dialogue-bubbles.jpg.webp) Netflix has spent the last five years attempting to expand its chokehold on the film and television industry into the video game space, but it's had limited success. Today, Game File reports(https://www.gamefile.news/p/netflix-closes-night-school-moonloot?r=2o0p2h&utmmedium=ios&triedRedirect=true) that the streaming giant is receding from the gaming world a little more by closing two studios: Moonloot, which had yet to release a game, and Night School, known for its work on Oxenfree and Afterparty. Netflix is also cutting staff from its internal team, though it "declined to say how many jobs were being lost" when speaking to Game File. Moonloot is a Helsinki-based team, founded in September of 2022 and led by Marko Lastikka,(https://about.netflix.com/en/news/building-our-internal-games-studios) who had experience working at Zynga and EA in the years prior.  Unfortunately, Moonloot never got the chance to release a game. Meanwhile, Night School made a name for itself long before its Netflix acquisition, releasing Oxenfree in 2016 and Afterparty in 2019. Under Netflix, it also released Oxenfree II: Lost Signals in 2023, Thronglets in 2025, and Unhinged, which launched very recently, on June 30. Game File reports that Netflix co-CEO Greg Peters praised Unhinged in a recent investor call, but given today's news, it seems Netflix was still dissatisfied with Night School. The indie studio's acquisition in 2021 was one of Netflix's earliest investments in the world of video games, so closing the studio is a significant step. Game File says Netflix is choosing to focus its future efforts on "kids gaming, party games, story-driven fare and games with mainstream hooks, such as a recently released FIFA game." Studio closures and mass layoffs have sadly become commonplace in the video game industry over the past several years. Earlier this week, Directive 8020 developer Supermassive had its third wave of layoffs since 2024(https://gameinformer.com/2026/08/11/until-dawn-and-directive-8020-developer-supermassive-games-will-lay-off-up-to-75-people). Earlier this year, Battlefield Studios had layoffs despite releasing the best-selling game of 2025;(https://gameinformer.com/2026/03/09/battlefield-studios-hit-with-layoffs-months-after-successful-battlefield-6-launch) Bungie was decimated and Destiny 2 released its final update(https://gameinformer.com/2026/06/25/bungie-is-laying-off-most-of-the-destiny-2-development-team), and Xbox parted ways with several of its development studios, laying off thousands(https://gameinformer.com/2026/07/06/xbox-parts-ways-with-five-studios-over-3000-layoffs-announced). That last instance, at least, recently received pushback; just yesterday, Xbox's new CEO visited Bethesda and was greeted by a giant inflatable rat(https://kotaku.com/xbox-boss-asha-sharma-says-elder-scrolls-vi-looks-great-so-stop-talking-about-that-giant-rat-outside-bethesdas-office-2000723542). Matthew McConaughey Discusses Passing On Playing Joel In The Last Of Us Show🎮 Multi-platform

Matthew McConaughey Discusses Passing On Playing Joel In The Last Of Us Show

Pedro Pascal plays Joel in HBO's popular The Last of Us, based on the Naughty Dog game, and he has been praised for his performance. However, he wasn't the only actor in the mix for the role. Oscar-winner Matthew McConaughey revealed more details on the Happy Sad Confused(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=peXOgVAUm40) podcast about why he didn't star on the show. The Last of Us "was really good but it wasn't for me at the time," the actor said. He added that signing on to The Last of Us would have also meant committing himself to the project for potentially years on end. "In success, this is something you'll be doing for years and years and years," he said. At the time he was circling The Last of Us, McConaughey said he "wasn't really acting" and was focusing more on writing and leadership roles in filmmaking. It would have been a reunion for McConaughey and HBO, as he previously starred on True Detective. That is an anthology series, and McConaughey appeared in the first season only, alongside Woody Harrelson. https://youtu.be/peXOgVAUm40?si=iOBaVWIfRAm1mX3X&t=2364 Before this, The Last of Us showrunner and writer Craig Mazin said he had talked to McConaughey about playing Joel(https://variety.com/2023/tv/news/matthew-mcconaughey-the-last-of-us-casting-talks-joe-1235653037/), but it was more of, "Hey, here's something we can talk about" as opposed to a definite thing was that happening. "Look, Matthew McConaughey is an amazing actor. I’m sure it would’ve been great, but it would’ve been different and I like the one that we made," Mazin said. The Last of Us Season 1 was released in January 2023 and it was a huge hit. Season 2 followed in 2025, and a third season is now coming in 2027(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/the-last-of-us-season-3-release-date-trailer-cast-story/1100-6534454/). In addition to Pascal as Joel, the series stars Bella Ramsey as Ellie and Kaitlyn Dever as Abby. As for the game series, it's rumored that Naughty Dog is working on The Last of Us: Part III(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/the-last-of-us-3-release-date-trailer-story/1100-6531075/), but this is not confirmed. What we do know is that Naughty Dog is making a new game, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet(The Heretic Prophet), though we have not seen it in some time.

Former Uncharted Dev On Possible New Remake Or Remaster: “What’s The Point?”🎮 Multi-platform

Former Uncharted Dev On Possible New Remake Or Remaster: “What’s The Point?”

Remakes and remasters are popular, but Benson Russell, a designer on Uncharted: Drake's Fortune at Naughty Dog, has said he's not interested in a new one for the 2007 game. Speaking to FRVR(https://frvr.com/blog/uncharted-trilogy-designer-doesnt-want-a-remake-as-it-makes-no-sense-just-make-a-new-game/), Russell said he's not against the idea of remakes and remasters generally, but he said Uncharted is "still in the zeitgeist" and available on modern platforms. "What's the point of remastering or remaking it?" he said. Instead of a remake or a remaster, Russell said a better idea might be to do what fans have been clamoring for: make a new one. “Take the lessons of Uncharted 4 and make a new game ..." he said. Russell went on to say a remake or remaster of the original Uncharted could feel "more like a cash grab" than something that people was thought was "necessary" to bring it up to modern standards. He would like to see Naughty Dog "take the spirit" of the franchise and make a new game. Bloomberg previously reported(https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-04-09/sony-s-obsession-with-blockbusters-is-stirring-unrest-within-playstation-empire) that Sony considered remaking or remastering Uncharted, but decided against it because it would be "expensive and require too much added design work." While Uncharted never got a remake or remaster, Naughty Dog's The Last of Us and The Last of Us 2 both had remastered versions. As for a new Uncharted game, a new entry in the series was reportedly planned some years ago(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/uncharted-5-underwent-some-planning-years-ago-report-says/1100-6539244/) and fans now believe Naughty Dog is teasing a new game(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/uncharted-5-fans-believe-cryptic-naughty-dog-dev-post-is-teasing-the-game/1100-6539214/). The original Uncharted game is playable today on PS5 and PS4 via Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection--this also includes Uncharted 2 and 3. These include updated, remastered versions of those three games. A lot of people embrace and enjoy remakes, while others say developers should instead spend more time and resources on entirely new games. Gaming legend Shigeru Miyamoto, for his part, defended remakes and remasters(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/nintendos-shigeru-miyamoto-defends-remakes-ahead-of-ocarina-of-time-switch-2-remake/), saying they are good for a number of reasons, including to help younger generations experience games they might have missed. Additionally, money from remakes and remasters can fund future games, he said.
