EA Says Saudi Takeover Deal Is Set To Close Next Week🎮 Multi-platform

EA Says Saudi Takeover Deal Is Set To Close Next Week

Electronic Arts will become a private company again very soon, with the gaming giant set to be acquired by an investors' group led by the Saudi Arabian government. As revealed in today's SEC filing(https://d18rn0p25nwr6d.cloudfront.net/CIK-0000712515/794ae72c-0dde-4a1b-b8e5-27c35e281317.pdf), "all regulatory approvals required to complete the Merger have been obtained. Electronic Arts currently expects the Merger to close on or about the close of trading on August 4, 2026." The news comes just after the deal was approved by the European Union(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/ea-sale-to-saudi-arabia-clears-a-major-hurdle/). The $55 billion deal is among the biggest ever seen in the gaming industry and will see EA--which has long been a publicly traded company--be taken private. Alongside Saudi Arabia, which is involved in the deal through its controversial Public Investment Fund, the other partners are private-equity firm Silver Lake and Affinity Partners, which was founded by Donald Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner. The buyout comes during a particularly tumultuous time for EA, which has seen several mass layoffs and canceled projects in recent years. Much of its resources have been funneled into a few key franchises, particularly Battlefield. Critics remain concerned that the Saudi government's involvement could influence the themes and values present in EA's games, perhaps most prominently in The Sims series(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/sims-team-says-values-are-unchanged-ahead-of-potential-saudi-ea-deal/1100-6537303/), but that remains to be seen. Most recently, EA CEO Andrew Wilson was given a massive pay increase(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/ea-ceo-got-a-huge-pay-increase-while-company-laid-off-devs/?thumbnailid=1439681) despite laying off many of the people responsible(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/ea-employees-slam-55-billion-buyout-in-open-letter/1100-6535484/) for his company's successful games. The deal will also saddle the newly private company with a tremendous amount of debt, and it's unclear how that will be addressed.

Square Enix Insists That Cursed Kingdom Hearts Art Was Not AI-Generated

Last month's Nintendo Direct(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/nintendo-direct-june-2026-all-the-biggest-announcements-and-games/) was full of all types of treats for Kingdom Hearts fans, including the announcement that native versions of the entire Kingdom Hearts trilogy will be coming to Switch 2(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/all-the-new-switch-2-ports-confirmed-in-nintendo-direct-june-2026/) via the release of The Kingdom Hearts Collection I-III. Players did not respond well to the trilogy's key art, which Square Enix shared on X(https://x.com/KINGDOMHEARTS/status/2064362651036369250) shortly after the announcement. Players quickly noticed several strange details in the image, and accused Square Enix of using generative AI(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/players-think-kingdom-hearts-new-art-is-ai-generated/) to create it. GameSpot reached out for comment at the time, and Square Enix has now decided to clear things up. According to a statement shared with GameSpot, The Kingdom Hearts Collection I-III art is not the result of AI. "We're aware of feedback regarding recent Kingdom Hearts visuals," reads the statement, which was shared via phone call with a Square Enix PR rep. "These assets were created by our development team without the use of generative AI, and the issues resulted from human error." Some of the "issues" being referenced here include Donald Duck having 4 fingers on one hand and 5 on the other, the hands on the clocktower appearing warped, the Keyblade's keychain links appearing uneven, Sora's crown-shaped belt chain links melting into each other, the absence of the crown-shaped pattern usually seen on the bottom of Sora's shoes, and various clothing zippers seeming to fade into nothing, among other issues. "Quality is extremely important to us, and updated assets have been implemented where appropriate," the statement continued. !An altered version of The Kingdom Hearts Collection I-III's new key art, which replaces Donald Duck's five-fingered hand with a proper, four-fingered hand.(https://www.gamespot.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/KHfixedartSquare.png?w=636) The new art fixes Donald's hand, but other odd flaws remain. The X post that started it all is still up, but elsewhere online, the image has been replaced with a new version. (The official trailer's YouTube thumbnail features a third version of the image(https://i.ytimg.com/vi/ldMqRmTwy80/maxresdefault.jpg), in which Donald's five-fingered hand is simply obscured.) The new image still features some of the strange details players pointed out in the original key art, including the warped crowns on Sora's belt chain, the lack of crowns on his shoe soles, and and the strange links on Mickey's Keyblade keychain. The clocktower's hands look a bit straighter, but for the most part, it appears the main goal was correcting Donald Duck's five-fingered hand, which now features the correct four digits. Square Enix did not provide any commentary as to how the original image came to be.
