🎮 PlayStation, Multi-platformSony’s Latest PS5 Sales Data Shows Digital Pulling Even Further Ahead
Sony's plans to embrace an all-digital future(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/sony-confirms-playstation-disc-production-will-end-in-2028/) are starting to gain ground, as the company has confirmed that 82% of all PS5 games, microtransactions, and DLC from Q1 2026--covering April 1 to June 30--were sold digitally. This is an increase of the previous ratio of digital games sold across the entire 2025 financial, which averaged 78%. It is worth noting that each quarter in that period had different numbers--83% in Q1 2025 FY, 72% in Q2, 76% in Q3, and 85% in Q4--so there's still plenty of time to see what the average ratio is when the next three quarters are added in. That quarter also saw several big games launch for PS5, such as Starfield, Saros, and 007 First Light. While the numbers point toward the inevitability of a digital-only games marketplace future for PlayStation, a section of the playerbase is still aiming to convince Sony to reverse course and keep offering physical games to some extent. Sony's social platforms have been under siege(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/over-220000-people-petition-sony-not-to-kill-physical-playstation-game-discs/) from a dedicated number of people who reply to every post with calls to keep physical games alive, and a week-long boycott of the company will kick off later in August. !(https://www.gamespot.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/PS5-sales-hardware.jpg?w=636) Will those initiatives help? Probably not, as Sony says that it will still "cautiously" move forward with its plans, but it is aware of the strong emotional connection that people have with physical media. Sony CFO Lin Tao said during a Q&A investors meeting that the "digitalization of content" has been steadily progressing and that Sony won't be doing a U-turn. Sony also stands to gain financially(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/why-is-sony-killing-discs-its-all-about-profitability-and-control-expert-says/) from the decision, as it'll earn 100% of the profits from sales of its first-party game. With physical sales of third-party PS5 games also coming to an end in 2028, the company can also claim a cut of those sales when people purchase games through its online marketplace. In other news from Sony's Q1 report, PS5 sales are slowly closing in on the 100 million lifetime sales milestone, monthly active user numbers are up, and company profits are up despite game sales remaining flat, thanks to tariff refunds and favorable exchange rates.
PS5 Is Closing In On 100 Million Sales, But It’s Losing Ground To The PS4
Sony is starting to feel the pinch of console price hikes, as the last quarter--April 1 to June 30 of 2026--saw the company sell 1.6 million PS5s, a slight increase when compared to the previous quarter that saw 1.5 million consoles sold. That's a steep decline of 36%(https://www.sony.com/en/SonyInfo/IR/library/presen/er/pdf/26q1sonypre.pdf) when compared to the same period in 2025, and so far, PS5 lifetime sales have reached 95.3 million units sold. In comparison, the PS4 had moved 100.2 million units by the same point in its lifecycle, albeit with the help of regular discounts and the MSRP of the system decreasing over time. The PS5 hasn't enjoyed the same benefits as its predecessor, as the ongoing shortage of RAM and other crucial components has resulted in PS5 console prices increasing(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/ps5-xbox-and-switch-2-heres-how-their-prices-have-changed-since-launch/) instead of decreasing, a first for PlayStation hardware. Sony noted that revenue from hardware sales is also down by almost 10%, while software unit sales are up from 65.9 million to 66.1 million, year-on-year. Despite its decision to end PS5 disc production being met with almost-universal backlash, digital game sales also increased from 78% to 82% during Q1. !(https://www.gamespot.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/PS5-business-2026.jpg?w=636) Monthly active user numbers are also up by 2 million, with Sony recording 125 million people using its services. Overall, sales are holding steady across game and network divisions, but profits did increase by 37% thanks mostly to US tariff refunds and favorable exchange rates. Nintendo also benefited from tariff refunds(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/nintendo-will-not-refund-tariff-fees-it-passed-onto-customers-saying-they-received-exactly-what-they-bargained-and-paid-for/) lately, but the company refuses to pass any refunds on to its customers. Sony has also noted that it has "secured the quantity of memory necessary" for all the PS5 consoles it expects to manufacture and sell this calendar year. The next few months will be a crucial period for Sony, as the release of GTA 6(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/grand-theft-auto-6-everything-we-know/1100-6503729/) is expected to give the company a sales bump during the holiday season.
🎮 PlayStation, Multi-platformSony Defends Going Digital, But Says It Understands Players’ Love Of Physical PS5 Games
Sony's decision to kill PS5 disc production in 2028(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/sony-confirms-playstation-disc-production-will-end-in-2028/) has been met with massive criticism since it was first announced, and the company has acknowledged the backlash. In a Q&A session(https://www.irwebmeeting.com/sony/fast/20260731/N5SWmcH4/2027031q02en/index.html) for investors following the posting of its Q1 financial results today--running from April 1 to June 30--Sony revealed more details about its decision to shift toward an all-digital future, and how the announcement had been met with "strong views" from its community of gamers. "We announced that from January 2028 onwards we will no longer be manufacturing game discs, so one-and-a-half years ahead," Sony CFO Lin Tao said (via an interpreter). "There are various reasons we made this decision, the biggest being that digitalization of content overall has been progressing. That's the big factor. It’s not just for PlayStation, but for all kinds of content; digitalization is progressing. When we think about the future, we put in a lot of thought and time, and we cautiously considered this, and we came to this conclusion and we're going to cautiously move this forward." Tao added that Sony has since then received "various opinions" from people with "strong views," acknowledging how its consumers have a strong emotional attachment to physical media. "We understand those emotions; we want to consider that. And in the future digital ecosystem, how we engage the gamers is something that we would like to continue to explore," Lin concluded. Sony's plans to move past physical media have been the subject of a lot of debate over the last couple of weeks. Digital adoption at Sony has surged in the last few years, with 82% of consumers choosing this option. Sony also stands to benefit financially(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/why-is-sony-killing-discs-its-all-about-profitability-and-control-expert-says/), as it'll get to keep all of the revenue from selling a first-party game and take a cut of the profits from third-party sellers through its online marketplace. While PlayStation gamers have been vocal(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/over-220000-people-petition-sony-not-to-kill-physical-playstation-game-discs/)--going so far as to voice their displeasure with every single social media post that Sony makes and organizing a rally for August--developers and publishers have also voiced their opinions. Ubisoft boss Yves Guillemot believes that there could be a benefit(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/ubisoft-boss-has-a-hot-take-on-sony-killing-game-discs/) to gaming being a digital-only hobby, while Rockstar Games co-founder Dan Houser says that Sony should provide an option for players(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/rockstar-co-founder-and-gta-co-creator-on-physical-games-companies-should-provide-it-if-people-want-it/) to have physical copies still--even if digital games offer several benefits. There might be some hope on the horizon, however, as Sony has suggested that there could still be code-in-a-box releases for games--an option that GTA 6 is using for its physical release in November(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/gta-6-physical-copies-wont-include-discs-just-download-codes/).

🎮 Multi-platformFor The First Time, Doom And Its Composer Will Melt Faces In Real Life
Fans of one of gaming's most iconic soundtracks will soon get to experience it in a whole new way, as composer Mick Gordon is set to play the Doom soundtrack live on stage for the first time as the headliner at Radar Festival in the UK next summer. Although Gordon played a medley at The Game Awards in 2016, this will be his first full-length set with a live band, orchestra, and full production. Gordon is known for defining Doom's identity with crushing riffs, industrial synths, and earth-shaking electronic production. His work on 2016's Doom and 2020's Doom Eternal established a new benchmark for video game soundtracks, with titles like Rip & Tear(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zZMg9ryeWOw), BFG Division(https://youtu.be/QHRuTYtSbJQ?list=RDQHRuTYtSbJQ), and The Only Thing They Fear Is You(https://youtu.be/nJNBDmm07Q) becoming firm fan favorites. They've earned millions of streams and remain staples of game music playlists years after release. https://youtu.be/QHRuTYtSbJQ?list=RDQHRuTYtSbJQ While the music has always had the scope for being performed live, Radar Festival marks the first time it will be performed with both a live orchestra and full backing band. If you've long hoped to experience the soundtrack in a live setting, that time has finally come. It's an even rarer opportunity considering Gordon's split from developer id Software(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/doom-eternal-composer-distances-himself-from-the-n/1100-6476272/) after the release of Doom Eternal raised questions about whether he'd be able to perform these tracks live again. Speaking exclusively to GameSpot ahead of the reveal, Gordon said he hopes that the live performance opens up the potential for more collaborations between festivals and video game music. "I hope this thing shows the potential of this type of stuff to publishers and developers," he said. "The game isn't just that gap between the player and the television." Gordon explained how the collaboration came to be. "Ever since Doom 2016 … there's been rumblings and multiple attempts to try and get some version of this into a live setting," he said. "I've been trying for a number of years to get this thing off the ground. Then out of the blue Joe James, Radar Festival organizer came to me with a really awesome opportunity through Radar." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zZMg9ryeWOw Gordon commended Radar Festival for its audience blend of metalheads and gamers, since the festival features three days of live alternative music alongside a marketplace where developers and players join together to preview new games, run tabletop sessions, or just chat about all things gaming. Gordon noted the crossover between metal music and gaming spanning is pretty wide, adding, "For a long time, I've wanted to take what I love about video game music and put it into a live setting that matches the energy you would get from a live rock or metal show … Radar feels like the absolute perfect festival to do it. There's no better," he said. But there was a time when Gordon thought a production of this magnitude might not be possible. "We released Doom Eternal on March 20, 2020, and lockdown was already in effect. I remember thinking, 'Shit, anything we could have done around this exact moment of the game coming out is gone now.' It felt, not like it was over or that we wouldn't be able to do it, but certainly if there was an opportunity it was slowly passing by. But it's interesting--music just survives." Gordon has confirmed that he'll be bringing the legendary Doom Machine for the performance--the custom instrument he created specifically to compose the soundtracks. Theatrics will be in full swing too, as festival organizer Joe James tells GameSpot, "We're looking at all options to make it epic. Fire, screens, projection mapping are all on the table." Radar Festival takes place between July 30 and August 1, 2027. You can sign up to their mailing list(https://mailchi.mp/773aad0f0673/signupradar27) for 25% off tickets. Gordon is currently working on the soundtrack(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/if-you-liked-dooms-heavy-metal-soundtrack-mick-gordons-next-project-will-go-even-harder/1100-6536078/) to the upcoming game, Defect.

!Game Informer News(https://gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/bodydefault/public/2026/07/29/d7cd16fb/ddpsionicscreenshot.jpg.webp) Dungeons and Dragons has a lot planned for the coming year. Following the 2024 release of its revised fifth edition ruleset (which the developers have come around to calling "5.5e" after initially resisting(https://dndbeyond-support.wizards.com/hc/en-us/sections/46714233564564-5-5e-Change-FAQs)), the D&D team has crafted a seasonal content structure reminiscent of a live-service video game like Overwatch or Fortnite. At today's Gen Con presentation, we got a decent look at all the expansions, collaborations, and tie-in products on the horizon for the coming year. It's a lot, so here's a rundown of what to expect in chronological order. Season of Magic: July – September 2026 !Game Informer News(https://gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/bodydefault/public/2026/07/29/133a7623/arcanaunleashed.jpg.webp)(https://gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/nocompression/public/2026/07/29/133a7623/arcanaunleashed.jpg.webp) Arcana Unleashed The first (and technically ongoing) season brings a pair of Arcana Unleashed books, themed around magical subclasses, items, and an adventure that pits players against the Red Wizards of Thay (a faction you might recognize from the 2023 Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves movie). Arcana Unleashed is the gameplay expansion, which includes eight subclasses, 33 spells, 10 backgrounds, 29 feats, 47 magic items, and more. It also concludes with a short adventure for first-level characters to test out the new arcane additions. Meanwhile, Arcana Unleashed: Deadfall is a "magical espionage campaign" that has you face off against Szass Tam, the dreaded lich. It's designed to bring players from level 11 up to level 20. Both Arcana Unleashed books drop September 15. DnDBeyond.com/LFG Next, Dungeons & Dragons is adding a new game-finding feature to D&D Beyond, and you can check it out at dndbeyond.com/lfg(http://dndbeyond.com/lfg). This page has three functions. First, you can use it to find in-person games near you. Second, D&D is partnering with startplaying.games(http://startplaying.games) to give players a discount when using the service, which connects people to for-hire Dungeon Masters online. Specifically, it makes the first game cost just 99 cents. Finally, there will also be a server to connect players with players through Discord. Season of Champions: October – December 2026 !Game Informer News(https://gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/bodydefault/public/2026/07/29/0401104d/dnd-wow343702.jpg.webp)(https://gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/nocompression/public/2026/07/29/0401104d/dnd-wow343702.jpg.webp) Dungeons & Dragons: World of Warcraft The next season is headlined by Dungeons & Dragons: World of Warcraft, one of the TTRPG's more ambitious crossovers. Not only does it bring Azeroth to the world of D&D, but the designers are boasting that it's a very thorough crossover. With 11 new species and 9 subclasses, the team says you can play as any World of Warcraft race and class combination that you could play in the game. It also includes seven World of Warcraft dungeons, 30 dungeon boss stat blocks, over 60 new spells, over 50 new monsters, and bespoke mechanics for professions, mounts, companion creatures, and faction rewards. Dungeons & Dragons: World of Warcraft, alongside a new DM screen, a pack of Icecrown Citadel maps (with an included adventure), and two packs of miniatures, launch on November 17. Like with all D&D products, you can also access them two weeks early if you purchase them from a local game store or pay for the D&D Beyond subscription Master Tier. The whole suite of products is available for pre-order today. D&D: Universes Beyond This is the first collaboration in a new initiative called Universes Beyond, which seeks to partner D&D content and mechanics with compatible crossover universes. While this is the first and only example we've seen so far, it's not hard to imagine that the D&D team will take some guidance from the numerous crossover collections seen in Magic: The Gathering in recent years. Season of Survival: February – July 2027 !Game Informer News(https://gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/bodydefault/public/2026/07/29/d09a7963/dnd-darksunfull-artedgeofoblivionsetting-expansionnestor-ossandon-leal.jpg.webp)(https://gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/nocompression/public/2026/07/29/d09a7963/dnd-darksunfull-artedgeofoblivionsetting-expansionnestor-ossandon-leal.jpg.webp) Dark Sun Dark Sun returns next year, kicking 2027 off with a bloody bang. It's set in Athas, a brutal world of city-states ruled by sorcerer kings, and with intense violence and sexual themes, the setting is pretty mature for D&D standards. The art is graphic, but so are some of the rules – in a private briefing of the news, we heard designers tease an optional decapitation mechanic, for example. It's actually extreme enough that it comes with a content warning, and copies in stores will have to be shrink-wrapped on shelves so sensitive audiences don't accidentally view its graphic art. The news was accompanied by a particularly gruesome animated trailer, complete with cartoon dismemberment, to set the tone. That trailer also has footage of a person fighting foes with psychic powers, because this book will finally re-introduce the Psion class to the D&D world. While it initially appeared in some playtesting material early in fifth edition's lifespan, Wizards of the Coast ultimately chose to add psychic-themed subclasses to its existing classes instead, saving the new rules for another time. Last year, it was released again as Unearthed Arcana, and it seems that this time, the design team was able to make enough progress to move it on the path towards publication. The content release includes two main books: Dark Sun: Edge of Oblivion is a setting expansion, while Dark Sun: Blood and Power is a gameplay expansion. The drop will also include a map pack, a Dark Sun DM Screen, and a limited edition 5.5e Player's Handbook with Dark Sun cover art. Season of Sword & Sorcery: September – October 2027 !Game Informer News(https://gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/bodydefault/public/2026/07/29/5ae17f7a/dnd-greyhawkdrelzna-concept-art.jpg.webp) Greyhawk: Crown of the Witch Queen The last announced season, scheduled for late 2027, will bring a new Greyhawk campaign setting, returning players to one of D&D's earliest original worlds. Greyhawk: Crown of the Witch Queen will be a 160-page hardcover book that is villain-focused, centering on Drelzna, the vampire daughter of Iggwilv (who is also known as Tasha). It's over a year out, so details are limited, but we know the book will be accompanied by a Greyhawk DM screen and a map pack. Other Announcements Finally, here's a rundown of everything else mentioned in the presentation that don't have a specific date tied to them. !Game Informer News(https://gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/bodydefault/public/2026/07/29/fe7bbee3/dndiconsforgencon.jpg.webp) D&D Icons D&D Icons is a new collaboration campaign to bring storied creators to work with the current design team on upcoming D&D content. Joe Manganiello (who I played HeroQuest with last year(https://gameinformer.com/feature/2025/08/26/can-you-sign-my-dice)) will be the program's chief creative officer, and the program will launch with collaborations with Luke Gygax (who will work on Greyhawk materials), Margaret Wies and Tracy Hickman (who will work on Dragonlance materials), and R. A. Salvatore (from The Legend of Drizzt). D&D says this group of cohorts is just the start of the Icons program, and hopes to work with more creators in the future. !Game Informer News(https://gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/bodydefault/public/2026/07/29/26e6400c/ddbmobileappframe1.png.webp)(https://gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/nocompression/public/2026/07/29/26e6400c/ddbmobileappframe1.png.webp) D&D Beyond Improvements Next, the presenters announced an overhaul to the D&D Beyond app, which is intended to make it a more helpful mobile companion for use at the table, not just for online play. It looks streamlined, with more intuitive menus and a cleaner interface. A version is scheduled to drop in 2027, but the developers stressed it will be a "very early version" and that they'll be relying on player feedback to shape the final product. !Game Informer News(https://gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/bodydefault/public/2026/07/29/10bf1c56/tasharevealstatic.png.webp)(https://gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/nocompression/public/2026/07/29/10bf1c56/tasharevealstatic.png.webp) Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons We also learned more about Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons, the upcoming third-person action-adventure game. Every warlock needs a patron, and today we learned the patron in this story will be Tasha, the Witch Queen. We also learned she'll be voiced by Maggie Robertson (best known for playing Lady Dimitrescu in Resident Evil Village), and that we'll get our first glimpse of gameplay at Gamescom next month. Annual Setting Support We also learned that D&D is teaming up with third-party TTRPG designers to create a more regular cadence of releases in its existing campaign settings. Ghostfire Gaming is developing a Ravenloft adventure for next year, Visionary Productions is developing an Eberron adventure featuring the Lord of Blades for 2028, and Kobold Press is working on future content set in the Forgotten Realms. D&D/Star Wars Crossover Details are scarce, but Wizards of the Coast also used its showcase to reveal upcoming plans for a "Season of Rebellion" related to some kind of Star Wars crossover. Wizards of the Coast published one of the main iterations of the Star Wars TTRPG starting way back in 2007, but a more recent Star Wars RPG (with different rules) has been published by Fantasy Flight in more recent years. We'll have to wait to learn precisely what this new crossover might involve.
