Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave Direct Reveals True Protagonist And Plot, Details Gameplay Systems

!Game Informer News(https://gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/bodydefault/public/2026/08/04/1955ed59/nintendoswitch2fefwscrn15.jpg.webp) This morning’s Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave Nintendo Direct featured a 20-minute gameplay deep dive into the upcoming strategy RPG. The presentation broke down classes and non-combat activities and revealed the game’s true structure. As previously detailed,(https://gameinformer.com/nintendo-direct/2026/06/09/fire-emblem-fortunes-weave-has-four-playable-protagonists-and-a) Fortune’s Weave centers on four playable protagonists who enter the Heroic Games, a gladiator-style arena tournament, to have their wish granted: Cai, Dietrich, Theodora, and Leda. You can switch between playing each one at any time, with progress for each one saved, allowing you to experience each character’s narrative in parallel. This plays into the game’s main theme of multiple fortunes intertwining. However, the twist is that this era is actually set in the past. Fortune’s Weave’s true plot is set five years in the future, where the world has been destroyed by the returning demon god Balor. The progenitor god Sothis has summoned the one soul capable of stopping him, a nameless hero clad in white who is the game’s true protagonist. To avoid facing Balor alone, this hero travels to the past to influence the fates of the four champions in order to assemble them in the future to save the world. Arena combat involves choosing a team of units and placing them on the field in traditional Fire Emblem fashion. Units can wield swords, gauntlets, spears, axes, bows, and magic, each with different properties and even forms (such as a gun(!)). Unleash Combat Arts deal greater damage at the expense of weapon durability, while Blaze Arts unleash bespoke special moves at the expense of HP. For example, Kai can blast a fireball that deals burn damage, Dietrich can instantly teleport to new squares, and Leda can buff surrounding allies and summon a monster to the field. After each move, you can rewind to any previous point in battle to redo any mistakes. The game’s classes are divided between Beginner, Specialty, and Advanced. Here’s a breakdown of each one, as detailed by Nintendo. - Beginner – There are five Beginner Classes, each dedicated to playing a foundational role in combat. They include gladiators who excel in handling weapons, diviners who wield magic, ornius riders with increased movement range and more. - Specialty – There are over 10 Specialty Classes, each with specific abilities. Armored knights offer ironclad defense, wing soldiers can leap obstacles and cover long distances, charioteers can strike multiple enemies in a straight line, and more. - Advanced – These classes are masters of their skills. Cataphracts have the mobility of horses and are heavily armored; guardians are skilled with white magic and spears; and elephant riders fight astride their giant mounts, to name a few. Between matches, Free Time occurs. You can prepare for future battles by training in the arena or by watching rivals battle to gather intel on them. The shopping arcade offers new weapons and enhancements. At Temple Row, you can volunteer at certain temples to temporarily gain stat buffs in battle, such as reduced damage. Taking certification exams lets units learn a new class, provided they have prerequisite skills. You can also take on quests from townsfolk, which must be finished within a deadline. Certain citizens can be recruited to your cause, though some require gifts or a meal to convince them to join. Inns let you lodge, eat, and pass time to gain resources automatically. Bonded characters converse in cinematics, raising their bonds. Outside of Dagsion, you can explore a world map to visit towns, gather information to find treasures, and battle in random encounters. You can also find dungeons to get materials for weapons and other rewards. Interestingly, dungeon battles unfold as traditional turn-based battles instead of taking place on a grid. The presentation concluded with smaller updates. Nintendo Music will be updated to feature a selection of tracks from Fortune’s Weave, such as the main theme. The Nintendo Today app also has new Fire Emblem themes coming tomorrow, along with new information leading up to launch. A new Ask the Developer article will be published on September 15. Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave is coming to Switch 2 on September 17. !(https://gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/entitybrowserthumbnail/public/2026/08/04/b04617b2/nintendoswitch2fefwscrn21.jpg.webp)!(https://gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/entitybrowserthumbnail/public/2026/08/04/dcf1f374/nintendoswitch2fefwscrn07.jpg.webp)!(https://gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/entitybrowserthumbnail/public/2026/08/04/5e159fe9/nintendoswitch2fefwscrn16.jpg.webp)!(https://gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/entitybrowserthumbnail/public/2026/08/04/57f28297/nintendoswitch2fefwscrn02.jpg.webp)!(https://gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/entitybrowserthumbnail/public/2026/08/04/f5305aa1/nintendoswitch2fefwscrn08.jpg.webp)

Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave Has Guns Now, Nintendo Just Won’t Admit It

Ahead of its launch in September, Nintendo broadcast a new deep dive on Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave(https://www.gamespot.com/games/fire-emblem-fortunes-weave/) today. So far, it looks like tried-and-trusted Fire Emblem with its mix of turn-based strategy and character buildcrafting, but the biggest surprise was the reveal of the ultimate weapon class in the game--that's right, the new Fire Emblem is packing heat. !(https://www.gamespot.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Fire-Emblem-Gun-2.jpg?w=636) Always bring a gun to a swordfight. While they aren't explicitly referred to as guns, the livestream did describe gauntlets as weapons that "look like firearms" when you equip them. They certainly do have more firepower as well, as the brief snippet of footage showing one of these in action revealed a weapon capable of firing off lightning-empowered rounds. Are there concealed carry laws in the Dagdan Empire regarding gauntlets? These are the questions we're dying to know the answer to. https://youtu.be/RaZiSBaJfU Normally, Fire Emblem games have focused on a mix of medieval weaponry and magic, with each weapon class being effective against certain types of classes and ineffective against others. This has created a delicate balance over the years, and that gameplay system has been retained for Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave. Archers are still a flying unit's worst nightmare, axe-wielding troops are slow but powerful, and mages are glass cannons in combat. Other interesting details from the livestream include a story that focuses on multiple characters, who players can switch between at any time, and the reveal that the story doesn't stop after you win the tournament that these champions are competing in. It looks like the narrative kicks off properly several years after the contest ends. Fortunately, you won't have to wait too much longer to play the new Fire Emblem, as it launches on September 17 for Switch 2.

Xbox Game Pass Loses This Perfect Organism And Three More Games In August

Xbox Game Pass giveth, and it taketh away in August. Fortunately, not too many games are going to be exiting the subscription service in the first half of August, as only four titles are on their way out on August 15. This month, you can say goodbye to Menace--which was available via Game Preview on PC,--Atlas Fallen, Aliens: Fireteam Elite, and Firewatch. As a reminder, Game Pass subscribers can save 20% on these titles before they leave, so if you like what you've been playing, this is a little bit of a silver lining. Aliens: Fireteam Elite fans will also want to keep an eye out for the sequel(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/aliens-fireteam-elite-2-revealed-and-you-can-almost-hear-the-motion-tracker-already/1100-6539841/) to the gung-ho action game, which launches on August 25. Game Pass removals for August 15 - Menace via Game Preview (PC) - Atlas Fallen (Cloud, Console, and PC) - Aliens: Fireteam Elite (Cloud, Console, and PC) - Firewatch (Cloud, Console, and PC) There are usually two waves of removals every month with Xbox Game Pass, and July was a pretty big one. Last month saw a grand total of 20 games exit Game Pass--11 games in the first wave(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/xbox-game-pass-is-removing-a-lot-of-games-very-soon/), and eight in the second(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/xbox-game-pass-is-removing-a-lot-more-games-very-soon/)--with several big names like Celeste, Whiskerwood, Sniper Elite: Resistance, and Crusader Kings 3 amongst the departures. The good news is that several replacements are on the way, with August's first wave(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/xbox-game-pass-reveals-first-wave-of-august-2026-games/) including Beast of Reincarnation as a headline act, while Game Pass Ultimate subscribers can try out Gears of War: E-Day early with the beta that starts on August 6. This Game Was Labeled A Success. Its Developer Laid Off 85% Of Staff 2 Months After Release.

In June, Netflix released an officially licensed FIFA World Cup game(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/fifa-world-cup-game-coming-to-netflix-with-updates-based-on-how-the-tournament-goes/), and while it was not a critical success, Netflix management later singled it out as a successful release(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/netflix-says-part-of-its-games-business-is-up-600-but-its-still-early-days/). Now, however, the studio behind the game, Refactor Games, has enacted a round of mass layoffs affecting the majority of the studio. Cofounder Nathan Burba told GamesBeat(https://gamesbeat.com/refactor-games-worked-with-delphi-on-fifa-game-for-netflix-now-the-studio-laid-off-85-of-staff/) that the studio has laid off 85% off its staff. This amounted to about 80 people, according to Insider Gaming(https://insider-gaming.com/developers-fifa-world-cup-let-go-refactor-games/). The studio's co-owner, Delphi Interactive, was said to have pulled funding after the launch of the game in June. Affected developers were reportedly notified on Friday, July 31. The laid-off developers reportedly received no severance pay, though the last day was a payday. !(https://www.gamespot.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Screenshot-2026-08-04-at-8.54.47-AM-1.png) Netflix continues to grow its games business. The Netflix FIFA game, which is called FIFA World Cup Launch Edition(https://www.netflix.com/games/82050895), allows people to play on their TV or computer with up to four people. The game features all 48 teams, 1,238 players, and 16 stadiums from the tournament. The game received poor review scores, with VGC saying(https://www.videogameschronicle.com/review/fifa-world-cup-review/) it's a "woefully undercooked companion" to the World Cup. During Netflix's latest earnings call, management said FIFA World Cup Launch Edition and the horror game Unhinged(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/you-can-play-oxenfrees-devs-new-game-unhinged-in-30-minutes-and-it-rules/) were two of company's "most successful" launches ever for cloud games on TV. Netflix did not share any specific datapoints that speak to their success, however. Despite some initial stumbles, Netflix remains interested and invested in the gaming space for the long term, seeing it as a major growth-driver.(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/netflix-reveals-its-vision-for-gaming-and-teases-interesting-releases-coming-this-year/1100-6539467/) Recently, Netflix reported that some of its gaming efforts have grown by 600%(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/netflix-says-part-of-its-games-business-is-up-600-but-its-still-early-days/), while also informing investors that it's still early days.
