Tomb Raider: Legacy Of Atlantis Director Discusses Use of Generative AI In The Upcoming Unreal Engine 5 Remake

!Tomb Raider Legacy of Atlantis Trailer Release Date PlayStation State of Play(https://www.gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/bodydefault/public/2026/06/02/70686a04/tombraider02.jpg.webp) We first learned about Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis last year(https://www.gameinformer.com/the-game-awards-2025/2025/12/11/tomb-raider-legacy-of-atlantis-is-a-remake-of-the-first-game-in-the), but it appeared during last week's PlayStation State of Play(https://www.gameinformer.com/round-up/2026/06/02/heres-everything-shown-during-the-june-2026-playstation-state-of-play) with a new February 12 release date(https://www.gameinformer.com/state-of-play/2026/06/02/tomb-raider-legacy-of-atlantis-gets-february-2027-release-date-in-new) and a Steam generative AI disclosure that indicates developers Crystal Dynamics and Flying Wild Hog used AI at one point, but notes that all AI assets have been "replaced or refined by humans."(https://www.gameinformer.com/opinion/2026/06/03/tomb-raider-legacy-of-atlantis-used-ai-at-one-point-but-devs-say-all-ai-assets) During Summer Game Fest 2026 media play days, we had a chance to play Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis – read our hands-on preview thoughts here(https://www.gameinformer.com/preview/2026/06/11/dont-go-chasing-waterfalls) – and interview Crystal Dynamics about the game. During this interview, Game Informer senior video editor Alex Van Aken asked Crystal Dynamics' experience director for the game, Jeff Adams, about the use of generative AI. Here's what he had to say: "At Crystal Dynamics, we see AI as a tool that can help our team get to right answers faster. So, let me give you an example of what that looks like. So, say in early level development, we have an idea for an object, but we're not sure whether or not we want to take the dev time to build it. We can use a generative AI tool to help us visualize that object in the world. And if it works, we'll then move it to our traditional pipeline. From there, the team will concept it, they'll build it, and we'll make sure that all the finished content in the final game is human-crafted. It's really important for us that our team has the tools to make the highest quality experience possible. Our fans deserve nothing less than that." We followed up, asking, "And so when you drag that generative piece into the engine, does it have scripts attached to it? Or is it an environmental art tool in that procedure? What's that look like?" At this point, a PR representative stepped in to say, "I think what I'd probably say is I think we've said all we want to say about it now. Once the game comes out and everyone can see how amazing it is, we'd probably be more comfortable. I think in this early moment, I just wouldn't want us to like start talking about that." Adams concludes, "We just want to make it as easy as possible for us to make high-quality game experiences. That's really the important thing." Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis is set to launch on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC next year on February 12. Tomb Raider: Legacy Of Atlantis Used AI At One Point, But Devs Say All AI Assets Have Been 'Replaced Or Refined By Humans'

Tomb Raider: Legacy Of Atlantis Used AI At One Point, But Devs Say All AI Assets Have Been 'Replaced Or Refined By Humans'

!Tomb Raider Legacy of Atlantis Trailer Release Date PlayStation State of Play(https://www.gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/bodydefault/public/2026/06/02/6aeadcac/tr3.jpg.webp) We got another look at Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis(https://www.gameinformer.com/product/tomb-raider-legacy-of-atlantis), which remakes Lara Croft's original 1996 adventure in Unreal Engine 5(https://www.gameinformer.com/the-game-awards-2025/2025/12/11/tomb-raider-legacy-of-atlantis-is-a-remake-of-the-first-game-in-the), during yesterday's PlayStation State of Play(https://www.gameinformer.com/round-up/2026/06/02/heres-everything-shown-during-the-june-2026-playstation-state-of-play), where we also learned it's been delayed from 2026 to February 12, 2027(https://www.gameinformer.com/state-of-play/2026/06/02/tomb-raider-legacy-of-atlantis-gets-february-2027-release-date-in-new). Those who have visited the game's Steam page(https://store.steampowered.com/app/3558670/TombRaiderLegacyofAtlantis/) since have discovered, however, that an "AI Generated Content Disclosure" is attached, stating that AI assets have since been replaced or refined by humans. AI has become a problem for the games industry in more ways than one. Not only is it leading to countless layoffs at studios and publishers around the world – with companies shortsightedly believing AI generation can replace the work done by real human hands – but it's also led to a RAM shortage in computing parts, leading to PlayStation(https://www.gameinformer.com/2026/03/27/sony-announces-playstation-5-and-portal-price-increases-coming-next-week), Xbox(https://www.gameinformer.com/2025/05/01/xbox-console-and-accessory-price-increases-begin-today-80-first-party-games-starting), Nintendo(https://www.gameinformer.com/2026/05/08/the-switch-2-is-getting-a-price-increase), and even Steam(https://www.gameinformer.com/2026/05/27/valve-just-raised-the-price-of-the-steam-deck-by-hundreds-of-dollars) to raise prices for their respective hardware. Whether you're someone affected by layoffs or struggling to enjoy the hobby because of rising prices, it can be a disappointment to see a game you're excited about utilize generative AI technology. Case in point, Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis. Here's what the disclosure says: "AI-assisted tools were used during development to support some early exploration and temporary development content. Any AI-assisted assets were either replaced or refined by humans in order to maintain the creative and artistic vision of the development team." It's nice to see that AI assets have at least been replaced or refined by humans, but it's still a shame to see that generative AI technology was used at all, especially when you consider that the various generative AI models out there are largely reliant on scraping existing human-made work on the internet. For now, we'll have to take the word of developers Crystal Dynamics and Flying Wild Hog on the AI content in the game. Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis launches on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC on February 12, 2027. How do you feel about this AI content disclosure? Let us know in the comments below!
