MachineGames' Dawn of the Machine gives players a new reason to play Quake 30 years after launch

PSA: Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls Has Day-One Issues On PC
Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls(https://www.gamespot.com/games/marvel-tokon-fighting-souls/) is out today, but PC players are experiencing some problems with the game that their PlayStation 5 counterparts don't have have to deal with. Developer Arc System Works noted that the PC port had issues during the open beta last month and it pledged to fix them(https://x.com/MARVELTokon/status/2082149200574173584?refsrc=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E2082149200574173584%7Ctwgr%5E95945384acf5e1428ea79c86c2138f102115a5e0%7Ctwcon%5Es1&refurl=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.eventhubs.com%2Fnews%2F2026%2Fjul%2F28%2Fmarvel-tokon-pc-issues-pledge%2F) with a patch on day one. However, PC players are reporting that Marvel Tokon is still suffering from the same problems that made it nearly unplayable during the beta. As explained by a player on Reddit(https://www.reddit.com/r/Fighters/comments/1vh9ywj/marveltokonisstillunplayableonpcforafew/), Marvel Tokon on PC is plagued by dropped frame rates and stutter regardless of the specs of the machines being used. "It's a problem that Arc System has to fix on their side, you can't do anything about it," writes Davids Symphony. "You could be running a 5090 with a 9800X3D at the lowest settings and it'll still happen." Players who were hoping to take Marvel Tokon for a spin on Steam Deck have also been disappointed to find that it can't even launch in Steam OS/Linux. "The best part is the community manager on discord saying that, 'Asking for Linux support is like asking for a Switch port,'" writes Rinnekaton on Reddit(https://www.reddit.com/r/Fighters/comments/1vh7wfn/marveltokonisblockedfromevenlaunchingon/). "The game uses EAC, and I don't even need to mention that EAC is widely supported on Linux. Linux support for EAC being a simple toggle (direct words from Valve themselves) is common knowledge at this point. In no way is it like porting to Switch." While it's unknown if or when Arc Systems will address Marvel Tokon's compatibility with Steam Deck, the developer has shared the details about its day-one patch. In the meantime, Arc Systems has unveiled a roadmap for Marvel Tokon's upcoming DLC(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/marvel-tokon-fighting-souls-roadmap/). The first new fighter slated to be added to the lineup this fall is Phoenix Cyclops, a cosmic-powered incarnation of the character from 2012's Avengers vs. X-Men crossover event. In that story, Cyclops, White Queen, Namor, Colossus, and Magik were each given a portion of the Phoenix Force that remade them into god-like beings. If the game follows a similar direction, other members of the Phoenix 5 could be added later. The current patch notes are below. Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls Day One Patch Notes Performance Optimizations (Primarily for the PC SKUs) - Removed unnecessary character animation updates from being performed; resulting in a reduced CPU load. - Made improvements to alleviate the load on the user interface update. - Made improvements to address an issue where performance significantly deteriorated when running applications that use overlays or capture video. OBS Studio: Video capture via Game Capture & Discord: Overlays, Video Capture. - Added an anti-aliasing option to the automatic graphics quality setting to ensure that the appropriate anti-aliasing option is applied based on performance and prevents unintended load increases. - Fixed an issue that enabled unintended anti-aliasing plug-ins (e.g. DLSS, FSR, XeSS). - Also included a feature to the custom graphics quality settings and effect options that allow you to change the update frequency of the stage background characters. - Selecting medium quality of low quality will reduce the update frequency and slightly reduce the load on the CPU. - Have set the prompt inquiring about performing a shade warm-up at startup to ON by default, making it easier to find and perform a shader warm-up. - Fixed an issue that caused the shader warm-up to run unintentionally at startup. - Steam Version: Fixed an issue that caused a delay in sending input data during online matches; resulting in improved online match performance. - PS5 Version: Implemented additional measure to mitigate input lag. Other Fixes - Game Screen - Fixed an issue where the game would automatically switch between monitors on setups that featured multiple monitors. - Online Lobby - Fixed an issue where some players would become invisible after viewing rankings in Ranked Mode and then enter the Online Lobby. - Ranked Mode - Fixed an issue where the screen would become distorted when a large number of digits were displayed. - Game Server Connectivity - Improved communication stability between the client and the game server. - Mouse - Fixed an issue where the game would sometimes crash when using the mouse too quickly in the game's menus. - Text Optimization - Fixed an issue where performance was significantly reduced when large amounts of text were on screen; particularly when set to Arabic or Thai. - Connectivity- Fixed an issue where the game would become unplayable if the network connection was lost during the Challenger Alert screen. Gameplay Adjustments - Input Optimization - Changed the input prioritization to 236 < 623 < 236 after 41236, allowing for a more accurate activation of 623 when using the input 6236. - Danger - Revised the input handling for ground dashes. Have made it possible to cancel into a skill from a ground dash to make it less likely for aerial special moves to be accidentally triggered.

The Latest PS5 Boxes Come With A Pretty Bleak Warning
The writing is on the wall for PlayStation and its plans for an all-digital gaming future--or on the PlayStation 5 packaging, to be exact. With Sony ending the production of game discs(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/sony-confirms-playstation-disc-production-will-end-in-2028/) in January 2028, the PS5 manufacturer has reportedly begun to slap warning stickers on restocks of its console, informing consumers that games will only be available in a digital format 17 months from now. Spotted by YouTuber Behind the Games--who says the console was purchased by a "trusted source" they know--the sticker includes the following disclaimer: "From January 2028, newly released games on PlayStation will be available for purchase on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital format only. Discs for games released before January 2028 can continue to be played on this console." The sticker looks legitimate--and Behind the Games has uploaded a video of it(https://x.com/BehindTGames/status/2085343574548189195) since then--as the same text can be found on the listings for PS5 consoles through European Amazon storefronts(https://www.amazon.de/PlayStation-PS5-SLIM-V2-Playstation%C2%AE5/dp/B0FP2S1MNB?th=1), likely so that Sony can comply with consumer laws in that region. https://twitter.com/BehindTGames/status/2085059320694100095 The company's decision to no longer offer a physical version of PlayStation games has been met with significant backlash(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/playstation-disc-death-sends-the-internet-into-its-physical-media-defense-arc/) so far, with many users calling for a boycott of the company and constantly replying to social media posts with calls for Sony to reverse its decision. Despite the ongoing campaign, Sony is still moving ahead with its plans, with Sony CFO Lin Tao commenting on the backlash(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/sony-defends-going-digital-but-says-it-understands-players-love-of-physical-ps5-games/) during a Q&A session for investors this week. Tao acknowledged that the announcement had been met with "strong views," but she said that Sony would continue to "cautiously" proceed. The company has in recent months noted how the ratio between physical and digital game sales has only widened in recent years, and in the last quarter (covering April to June), 82% of its game sales(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/sony-latest-ps5-sales-data-shows-digital-pulling-even-further-ahead/) were digital.

Nintendo Reveals Digital Sales Up 90% Compared To Last Year, Switch 2 Units Top 23 Million, And More
!Game Informer News(https://gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/bodydefault/public/2025/04/02/12807291/switch2preorder.jpg.webp) Nintendo has released its latest financial earnings report(https://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/pdf/2026/260806e.pdf), covering the first quarter of the fiscal year, which encompasses April through June 2026. In it, the company has revealed that digital sales revenue is up 90% year-over-year, that the Switch 2 sold nearly 4 million units in those three months, and that, unsurprisingly, Mario Kart World(https://gameinformer.com/product/mario-kart-world) continues to be the best-selling game on the console. According to Nintendo, digital sales totaled 132.7 billion yen (or roughly $837 million), up 90% year-on-year, "mainly due to an increase in sales of downloadable versions of packaged software." This figure arrives just weeks after Sony announced it will stop manufacturing discs for PlayStation games in 2028(https://gameinformer.com/2026/07/01/playstation-will-cease-production-of-physical-discs-for-new-games-in-january-2028), sparking an uproar among players who want to purchase physical copies. With rumors swirling that Xbox may follow suit, Nintendo could be the last of the Big Three console makers to release its games in a physical format (though players argue whether Nintendo's current go-to solution for physical releases, Game-Key Cards, is any different from a digital download key). Elsewhere in the company's earnings report, it states the "Nintendo Switch 2 hardware maintained strong sales momentum, with sales totaling 3.82 million units," bringing the total up to 23.68 million. Software units total 58.17 million. Looking at Switch 2 software, the company says Yoshi and the Mysterious Book(https://gameinformer.com/review/yoshi-and-the-mysterious-book/low-stakes-charm), Star Fox(https://gameinformer.com/review/star-fox-2026/mission-complete), and Pokemon Pokopia(https://gameinformer.com/review/pokemon-pokopia/a-pleasant-paradise) "sold well" but stops short of giving exact numbers for this fiscal quarter. Nintendo did reveal that Switch 2 software sales totaled 9.46 million during this latest fiscal quarter, adding that Switch software in the form of Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream(https://gameinformer.com/review/tomodachi-life-living-the-dream/you-get-what-you-give) reached 7.94 million units. As a result of these earnings, Nintendo says it is not making changes to its original financial forecast for the fiscal year. "Nintendo Switch 2 is now in its second year since launch in June 2025 and sales continue to be strong," the report reads. "We aim to maintain momentum for the hardware and see it delivered together with software into the hands of a wide range of consumers." The company highlights recent releases and upcoming launches, including Splatoon Raiders (launched in July) and Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave, Nintendo Switch Sports Resort, and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (the remake) coming throughout the rest of the year. To close out this look at Nintendo's latest fiscal report, here are the sales numbers(https://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/en/finance/software/index.html) for various Switch 2 and Switch games released so far (in total): - Mario Kart World: 15.39 million units – Our Review(https://gameinformer.com/review/mario-kart-world/roam-if-you-want-to) - Donkey Kong Bananza: 4.78 million units – Our Review(https://gameinformer.com/review/donkey-kong-bananza/breaking-through-to-something-new) - Pokemon Legends: Z-A – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition: 3.99 million units – Our Review(https://gameinformer.com/review/pokemon-legends-z-a/maintaining-rank) - Pokemon Pokopia: 3.68 million units – Our Review(https://gameinformer.com/review/pokemon-pokopia/a-pleasant-paradise) - Kirby Air Riders: 1.90 million units – Our Review(https://gameinformer.com/review/kirby-air-riders/star-ships-were-meant-to-fly) - Super Mario Party Jamboree – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition: 1.15 million units – Our Review(https://gameinformer.com/review/super-mario-party-jamboree-nintendo-switch-2-edition-jamboree-tv/solid-base-with-tepid) Do any of these numbers surprise you? Capcom Unfazed By Physical Games Dying Off
One of the biggest talking points in gaming lately has been around Sony's decision to end support for physical game discs in 2028(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/sony-confirms-playstation-disc-production-will-end-in-2028/). It's prompted concerns about game preservation, along with people generally being upset about owning physical media. Now, publisher Capcom has shared its thoughts, with management saying the shrinking physical game market is not expected to have much of an impact because the company sells mostly digital games. "Approximately 90% of our unit sales are digital. We do not anticipate a significant impact at this time," the company said(https://www.capcom.co.jp/ir/english/data/pdf/explanation/2026/1st/explanation20261st02.pdf). Capcom is not alone in having a growing share of its game sales come from digital--a shift to digital has been a growing trend in recent years across the board. Nintendo, for its part, just released its latest earnings briefing today, August 6, confirming digital game sales made up 61.5% of total sales(https://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/pdf/2026/2608062e.pdf) during the latest quarter, up from 59.3% during the same period last year. Electronic Arts recently released its latest report as well, showing 81% of game sales were digital(https://www.tradingview.com/news/tradingview:f534cc4e79e85:0-electronic-arts-inc-fy-2026-revenue-7-53b-eps-3-51-10-k-summary/). For its part, Sony said it's ending support for physical game discs on PlayStation in response to "consumer trends." The data clearly shows a growing trend toward digital games, but experts also believe the shift to all-digital is about power, control, and making more money(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/why-is-sony-killing-discs-its-all-about-profitability-and-control-expert-says/). The biggest game of 2026, GTA 6(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/grand-theft-auto-6-everything-we-know/1100-6503729/), is also releasing as a digital exclusive. The game will be sold at retailers in a box, but players only get a code to download the game(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/gta-6-is-not-releasing-with-a-disc-and-that-just-makes-sense-in-2026/).

Halo On PS5 Is Off To A Slow Start, Expert Says
For the first time ever, a Halo game is available on PlayStation with Halo: Campaign Evolved. The game is having a "notably slow start" on Sony's console in terms of sales, however, according to gaming analyst Rhys Elliott(https://alineaanalytics.substack.com/p/julys-top-playstation-games-by-copies). He estimated that Campaign Evolved sold 351,000 copies on PS5 during July and 452,000 to date, generating nearly $28 million. By comparison, Elliott said Campaign Evolved has shifted 212,000 units on Steam and about 900,000 on Xbox across console and PC thus far. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7LimYD3Ycwo The analyst said the game's price point--$50--was partly to blame. "Fifty dollars for what’s essentially a graphical touch-up of a 2001 game was always going to be a hard sell, and players clearly weren’t having it," he said. Beyond graphical improvements, Campaign Evolved also features three new prequel missions via the Operation Meteorite story arc. Multiplayer is what Halo is perhaps best known for, but Campaign Evolved--as its name suggests--does not feature multiplayer support. Also in his comments, Elliott said the slow start for Halo on PS5 "stings even more" when compared to the success of the Black Ops 1 and 2 ports on PlayStation. Those games reportedly combined to sell more than 11 million units(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/black-ops-1-and-2-ports-sold-11-million-copies-combined-on-playstation-benefitting-both-xbox-and-sony/), generating hundreds of millions of dollars. Elliott went on to lament the slowing sales and diminishing profile of Halo as a franchise in general after the series peaked with Halo 3 and Halo: Reach years ago. "One can’t help wondering what could have been if Halo had kept the trajectory it had around Halo 3 and Reach. A remake of the game that started it all landing this softly on a new platform makes me pretty sad, as a Halo fan," he wrote. There are more Halo games in development, including one that's been described as "like Fortnite"(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/next-halo-game-may-be-like-fortnite-with-live-service-report/1100-6535547/) with regards to its live-service approach. Developer Halo Studios has said future Halo games will also be on PlayStation(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/halo-games-will-be-on-playstation-going-forward-says-microsoft/1100-6535712/), but those comments came before Asha Sharma became Xbox CEO and pledged to release more exclusive games for Xbox(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/xbox-clarifies-its-exclusivity-strategy-moving-forward-wants-you-to-buy-an-xbox/).

Halo remake isn't doing so hot on PS5 compared to Black Ops ports
Call of Duty: Black Ops and Black Ops 2 recently came to the PS4 and PS5, where they're dramatically outselling Halo: Campaign Evolved.
