Ubisoft Singapore On Why Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced Is Ubisoft's First-Ever Remake

!Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced Reveal Screenshots(https://www.gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/bodydefault/public/2026/04/23/a7fa1bed/assets2026041776929556acbfrscreenshotstatic16x9stealth230426615pmcest.jpg.webp) Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced(https://gameinformer.com/product/assassins-creed-black-flag-resynced) is not just the first-ever Assassin's Creed remake, but also developer/publisher Ubisoft's first-ever from-the-ground-up remake. We went hands-on with Black Flag Resynced for a few hours, and you can read our preview impressions here(https://gameinformer.com/preview/2026/05/14/a-textbook-remake-and-all-the-better-for-it) to learn why we're stoked to play more when it launches this July, but we also spoke to various developers on the team (and even Edward Kenway's voice actor Matt Ryan(https://gameinformer.com/interview/2026/05/14/assassins-creed-black-flag-resynced-an-interview-with-edward-kenway-voice)) about this ambitious project. Here's what we learned. I asked Black Flag Resynced creative director Paul Fu, who also handled narrative direction on Skull and Bones(https://gameinformer.com/review/skull-and-bones/middle-high-sea) at Ubisoft Singapore, why this specific Assassin's Creed adventure is the first to get the remake treatment. It turns out it's as simple as liking a character. "The answer is because I really love Edward Kenway," Fu tells me. "I think he's just special. He's almost like a brand within a brand; he's one of the crown jewels of Ubisoft, in my opinion, and he has a really, really good story. It's funny, it's dark, it's melancholic at times, and it's just moving." Ubisoft Anvil architect Nicolas Lopez, who works on the company's Anvil engine tech, says if you remove the number/roman numeral "IV" from the original Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag(https://gameinformer.com/games/assassinscreedivblackflag/b/playstation4/archive/2013/10/28/assassins-creed-iv-black-flag-review-game-informer.aspx), what's left is a game ripe for a return. He says it has a great Caribbean setting, an iconic assassin in Edward, and two interesting types of gameplay: naval combat and on-ground adventuring. "So all that alone, it's like, 'Wow, okay, that sounds like quite the package,' and then when you look at the game and roughly how old it is, you can start to dream about it: 'What if we had Black Flag with all these things?'" Lopez says. "And then for us as a studio, Ubisoft Singapore not only has a history of working on water tech through Anvil, we have a history with naval gameplay and stuff, so when you put all those things together, it's like, 'Yeah, why not take a stab at it with Black Flag?' It actually makes a lot of sense to try, so for us, because of the ability to dream it, it really fits." Lopez says the most exciting aspect of using 2026's Anvil (vs the Anvil of 2013) for Black Flag Resynced is physics-based rendering. Though it's something developers have been doing in games for 15 years or more in some cases, it's hard to deny how far the technology has come. Lopez says the original Black Flag "was so old in a way," and that last year's Assassin's Creed Shadows(https://gameinformer.com/review/assassins-creed-shadows/dont-stop-me-naoe-because-im-having-a-good-time) really pushed the technology of Anvil forward. "But there were still things we wanted to improve," he tells me. "Black Flag Resynced was the perfect opportunity to consolidate and push this even further." !Game Informer News(https://www.gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/bodydefault/public/2026/04/23/21e4ddda/assets2026041776929557acbfrscreenshotstatic16x9havana230426615pmcest.jpg.webp) For example, if you played at 60 FPS in Assassin's Creed Shadows, you didn't get Ray Tracing on PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X/S, and there were no options for Ray Tracing on the Xbox Series S at all. Black Flag Resynced will have Ray Tracing with 60 FPS gameplay on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X due to the Anvil improvements, Lopez says, noting it's quite the achievement for Ubisoft as "Black Flag Resynced is an even heavier game than Shadows." Surprisingly, Black Flag Resynced is more in line with Shadows than with Skull and Bones, despite the obvious comparisons, according to Fu. "They're very different games," Fu says regarding Black Flag Resynced and Skull and Bones. "I did work on Skull and Bones as the lead narrative designer, so I worked on a lot of the stories and the quest systems, but they are very, very different games. I would very confidently say that the naval tech we have in Black Flag Resynced has more from Shadows than it does Skull and Bones." Fu says the team even drew more creative inspiration from the original Black Flag and Assassin's Creed III(https://gameinformer.com/games/assassinscreediii/b/xbox360/archive/2012/10/30/assassin-39-s-creed-iii-review-staggering-scope-and-breadth.aspx), where naval combat first appeared in the series, than from Skull and Bones. Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced launches on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC on July 9. Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced's Modern Day Story Has Been Replaced With 'What If?' Scenario Rifts For Edward Kenway

!Game Informer News(https://www.gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/bodydefault/public/2026/05/14/8d389185/Black%20Flag%20Modern%20Day.jpg.webp) Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag's(https://gameinformer.com/product/assassins-creed-iv-black-flag) modern-day storyline is an odd one. Though it's a story I ultimately like (I am admittedly a sucker for this element of this series), it's hard to deny that it feels a bit strained because of the events of Assassin's Creed III(https://gameinformer.com/games/assassinscreediii/b/xbox360/archive/2012/10/30/assassin-39-s-creed-iii-review-staggering-scope-and-breadth.aspx) before it, which effectively wraps up the storyline the games began in the first Assassin's Creed. As a result, it's somewhat of a nothingburger of a subplot, but it does provide some "Here's where they are now" looks at key characters like Shaun and Rebecca. Nonetheless, with Ubisoft remaking this pirate adventure in Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced(https://gameinformer.com/product/assassins-creed-black-flag-resynced), which launches on July 9, developer Ubisoft Singapore is changing how the modern-day story plays out, and it's quite a drastic change. It eschews what's there – no more first-person office simulator – and replaces it with rifts, last seen in 2025's Assassin's Creed Shadows(https://gameinformer.com/review/assassins-creed-shadows/dont-stop-me-naoe-because-im-having-a-good-time). Instead of being taken out of the historical story told through Edward Kenway, in Black Flag Resynced, players will find rifts hidden throughout the Caribbean that then tell "What If?" scenarios about this Assassin's life. "The modern-day direction has changed quite a bit," creative director Paul Fu tells me. "Desmond's story has also come to a conclusion some time ago at the point in the series when Black Flag originally launched, so it felt natural for us to evolve with the Animus Hub. Edward's story is now being told in modern-day rifts, which are now almost like secret bottles that you find in the Caribbean, so they no longer strongly telegraph and push the narrative anymore; you have to actively search for these secrets, and they provide 'What if?' scenarios. "So, 'What if Edward chose greed over his wife?' for example. We wanted it to be a little more narrative-driven than they were in Shadows. But at the same time, we know that there are people who love the previous modern-day story as well. Personally, I'm one of them. I actually really like the Abstergo stuff, but we didn't include that because it felt like it didn't fit. But we did rewrite parts of the story to allude to that narrative. There's an entirely new scene that helps us cover Bartholomew Roberts' story more with something I won't spoil right now, but I think people who have played Black Flag know what the story was, so we created a new scene ... to pull the heartstrings of fans when they play the content." In another interview, game director Richard Knight tells me that Ubisoft is viewing Black Flag Resynced as the next flagship Assassin's Creed, even if it is a remake of an older entry. He says that was taken into account when discussing how to remake the modern-day story of Black Flag. "The modern-day story in Black Flag Resynced continues some of the things you saw in Assassin's Creed Shadows. But we also knew that we wanted something that was not completely disconnected because some players like the modern-day too, but some players will feel like, 'Oh, I'm doing something else, but I'm here for Edward.' We're here for Edward, too, so we're building around that. So with our modern-day, we wanted something that can still be that experience but also tie it back to Edward, and that's where the 'What ifs' are important. You're still exploring it in that sort of modern-day format, but you're getting these 'What if?' stories that make you think about the characters and the choices they made." I'm excited for Black Flag Resynced, and you can read my hands-on impressions here(https://gameinformer.com/preview/2026/05/14/a-textbook-remake-and-all-the-better-for-it), but as a fan of the modern-day storytelling in the franchise, I'm nervous about these changes. They sound interesting, but I also hope it doesn't completely erase the narrative that exists in the modern-day sections of the original Black Flag. Fortunately, I don't have to wait long to find out as Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced launches on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC on July 9. In the meantime, check out the Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced PC specs and requirements(https://gameinformer.com/2026/04/23/here-are-the-assassins-creed-black-flag-resynced-pc-specs-and-requirements), and then read about this real-life $500,000 treasure hunt Ubisoft has launched(https://gameinformer.com/2026/05/13/assassins-creed-black-flag-resynced-ubisoft-launches-real-life-500000-treasure-hunt-but) to celebrate this remake. After that, read Game Informer's original Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag review(https://gameinformer.com/games/assassinscreedivblackflag/b/playstation4/archive/2013/10/28/assassins-creed-iv-black-flag-review-game-informer.aspx). Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced Might Be Adding As Many Problems As It's Fixing

There are always the usual questions when a remake for an already-beloved game gets announced. What about it is actually new beyond the visual upgrade? Why is this specific title getting the remake treatment and not another game in the same series? And, most importantly, why remake this older game in a different engine, with new recorded voice lines, different gameplay, and reimagined characters and storylines, when all of the time and resources to do all of that could be used on a brand-new game? That last one in particular kept ringing in my head during a preview event for Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced(https://www.gamespot.com/gallery/10-ways-assassins-creed-black-flag-resynced-differs-from-ubisofts-original-pirate-adventure/2900-7683/), where I played about three hours of the upcoming pirate adventure. Pessimistically, I think the answer is that Ubisoft needs an easy win, and theoretically, there shouldn't be an easier slam dunk for the developer-publisher than Black Flag. It may not be the number-one Assassin's Creed game on every player's list, but it's near-universally beloved by the community in a way that no other game in the series is. If I had to remake an Assassin's Creed game, Black Flag would definitely be the one that I'd pick. It's the one game in the series that you'd need to change the least to get a ton of fans on board. Virtua Fighter 6 Leak Reveals New Character, Old Favorite, And A Fresh Title

It appears that a big reveal of gameplay features and visuals tied to the new Virtua Fighter game is imminent. Overnight, part of what looks like an online presentation was leaked on Chinese video-sharing platform Bilibili, where it quickly spread like wildfire across Reddit(https://www.reddit.com/r/virtuafighter/comments/1tje7vv/virtuafightervicrossroadsleakedvideo/?utmsource=share&utmmedium=web3x&utmname=web3xcss&utmterm=1&utmcontent=sharebutton) and fighting-game discord channels. The footage, which features four characters showing off new and old fighting techniques, gives us a glimpse of the game's flashy visual presentation, which seems heavily inspired by recent games like Street Fighter 6. The fighting, however, remains true to Virtua Fighter's roots of martial-arts realism, depicting some brutal-looking strikes, kicks, and grapples. The already-revealed Wolf and Stella are present in the leaked footage, but there are two faces we haven't seen yet: a male character who seems to use a mix of Southeast Asian martial arts--with their name shown briefly as "Cielo" during a shot of the matchup screen--and what appears to be an older version of longtime Virtua Fighter favorite Pai Chan. The title is also shown in part of the screen as "Virtua Fighter Crossroads." Producer Riichiro Yamada and another RGG studio staff member also speak briefly about the game as the footage plays--which Gematsu has translated(https://www.gematsu.com/2026/05/leaked-virtua-fighter-crossroads-developer-diary-appears-online) for the curious--giving veracity to the leak. It's likely that we get a much bigger look at the upcoming game either during June's State of Play presentation, Summer Games Fest, or EVO 2026. While the leak is unfortunate, it does offer a tantalizing glimpse into a longer showcase of the game coming in the near future that will likely tell us more about game modes, controls, and the narrative element.

Former Splinter Cell Director Thinks Modern Graphics Are Hurting Stealth Games

Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory creative director Clint Hocking has suggested that modern-day advances in video game graphics have made it more challenging to develop stealth games. Thanks to the evolution of lighting over the years--like ray and path tracing--Hocking believes that the more nuanced shade and darkness levels present in games make it harder for players to read the digital room and see just how hidden they are when sneaking past enemies. "I actually think one of the difficulties with modern stealth games is the sophistication in the rendering has made lighting so much more realistic," Hocking said to FRVR(https://frvr.com/blog/news/splinter-cell-designer-says-one-of-the-difficulties-with-modern-stealth-games-is-realistic-lighting/). "When you think about those old-school stealth games because of their baked lighting, the lighting is very clean and readable and very understandable for the player. "But once you get into this diffuse and ambient occlusion and all of the stuff that comes with it, it gets very hard to tell what's light, what's shadow, what's dark, what's safe, what's dangerous, and all of that stuff." Early Splinter Cell games had a solution to this issue, as they made use of a light meter to give players an indicator if they were cloaked in shadows or on the verge of being spotted. Fast-forward to Splinter Cell: Conviction(https://www.gamespot.com/games/tom-clancys-splinter-cell-conviction/), and Ubisoft's approach was to remove color from the game world as Sam Fisher blended into the monochrome shadows--this was later removed for Splinter Cell Blacklist(https://www.gamespot.com/games/tom-clancys-splinter-cell-blacklist/), replaced with a small light on Sam Fisher's suit.
