🎮 Multi-platformHow Capcom Created Its Own Version Of Legendary Samurai Miyamoto Musashi In Onimusha: Way Of The Sword
!Onimusha Way of the Sword Capcom Release Date September 25 2026(https://gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/bodydefault/public/2026/06/02/211dfbee/onimusha01.jpg.webp) I traveled to Osaka, Japan, back in June to visit Capcom’s HQ and learn more about Onimusha: Way of the Sword(https://gameinformer.com/Onimusha), which is the latest game to grace the cover of Game Informer(https://gameinformer.com/cover-reveal/2026/07/16/cover-reveal-onimusha-way-of-the-sword). You can read that cover story right here(https://gameinformer.com/feature/2026/07/21/the-return-of-onimusha) if you’re a subscriber(https://gameinformer.com/subscribe), but alongside that feature, I’m posting exclusive stories for the next couple of weeks based on my various interviews with the leads behind Capcom’s return to the Onimusha series after a 20-year hiatus(https://gameinformer.com/exclusive-interview/2026/07/20/why-2026-was-the-year-to-bring-onimusha-back-after-a-20-year-gap). One of those interviews was with Way of the Sword animation team lead Hiroshi Yugen, who explained how the studio created its own version of Miyamoto Musashi, a legendary samurai in Japanese history and the game’s protagonist. He says the fables, legends, and real stories about Musashi influenced a lot of the game’s take on the swordsman. !Game Informer News(https://gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/bodydefault/public/2026/06/12/09998bcb/onimushawsss17-demo1.jpg.webp) “There’s definitely a lot of influence from those real stories that went into creating the action Musashi uses in the game, both in terms of his reputation as a sword master and him being very skilled with multiple weapons,” Yugen says. Musashi won’t be utilizing his famous dual-wielding style as he’s still early in his journey – in his 20s – and hasn’t yet discovered/created it at this point of his life in Way of the Sword. “Where Musashi is set in this game is before he’s really mastered that, so there’s more focus on that one-sword action, but we did want to include elements of his familiarity with other weapons, which is why we have the Oni Armament skills that come into play.” During my time playing Way of the Sword, I used two different Oni Armaments. The Two Celestials are small blades that deal straight damage, while the Earth-Shaker hammers I later unlock in my playtime inflict heavy stagger damage. Equipping different Oni Armaments based on the enemies before you is a crucial part of Musashi’s combat kit. During a fight with the Nue, which consisted of two Chimera, mythical beasts inspired by various animals, using the Earth-Shaker hammers was key to my (eventual) victory against them. Yugen says stories about Musashi tell of how he used whatever means necessary to achieve victory, which is why his kit includes more than just a sword. You can parry enemies into torches, setting them on fire as a result, or flip tables to use as large shields – after you’re done using it as a shield, you can throw it into enemies, too, knocking them off balance. “These are all elements that were kind of inspired by the real stories of Musashi,” Yugen says. Some stories of Musashi, who is famous for an undefeated record of 62 sword duels and traveling around Japan specifically to reach that number, tell of an attitude somewhere between confident and cocky. That’s apparent in Way of the Sword’s Musashi, who is also searching for the next duel – in fact, he wants to get rid of the Oni Gauntlet on his arm because he feels like using it is cheating in these duels, a far cry from the likes of Samanosuke or Jubei, who want to use their Oni powers to save the world in Onimusha: Warlords and Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny, respectively(https://gameinformer.com/exclusive-interview/2026/07/23/a-look-back-on-the-first-two-onimusha-games-with-planner-and). !Game Informer News(https://gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/bodydefault/public/2026/06/12/0f61b816/ss4ee71e56889c1dc82b55e013d6bbe7f2cd2d1027.1920x1080.jpg.webp) Yugen says he and the team stressed this confidence/cockiness to the motion capture artists Capcom hired to perform the actions of Musashi and his enemies. But, given how early in Musashi’s journey Way of the Sword takes place, they also took great care to make his action “a little rough around the edges” and “not quite as defined,” according to Yugen. One thing that helped was to imagine each fight in the various scenarios Musashi finds himself in as a Street Fighter bout. Leaning on one of Capcom’s other franchises, Yugen says the Street Fighter angle helped them define what Musashi would be thinking about as each fight begins, how he would walk up to enemies and approach them with sword in hand, and more. “It was towards the end of the project that we really started introducing those elements to flesh out the uniqueness of him, even down to the way he walks,” Yugen adds. “We didn’t want him to walk with this tension; he has a bit of swagger to him, and that’s something we really paid attention to in design.” Continuing, Yugen says, “Musashi doesn’t really hide his feelings. He’s very blunt, he’s very direct, and when something is a pain in the ass, he’ll say, ‘God, this is a pain in the ass.’” Some of that is apparent in the Way of the Sword demo that you can play right now, and a lot of that was apparent in my extended hands-on time with the game. I look forward to seeing how Musashi grows as a swordsman and a man in the game when it launches next month. I’ll continue diving deeper into Capcom’s return to Onimusha as part of Game Informer’s month of Way of the Sword coverage. We’ll be publishing exclusive gameplay and behind-the-scenes videos (including a Rapid-Fire Interview) on the Game Informer YouTube channel(https://www.youtube.com/@gameinformer) as well. 🎮 Multi-platformMLB The Show 26 Celebrates The Trade Deadline’s Biggest Villain
Tarik Skubal has been one of the best starting pitchers in all of baseball over the last few years, winning two consecutive Cy Young Awards as a member of the Detroit Tigers. But the Tigers have been having a rough season, and the team dealt Skubal to the Dodgers at the trade deadline this past weekend. Now, MLB The Show 26 is celebrating Skubal's move to Los Angeles with a special Diamond Dynasty card, so everyone can play as the biggest villain in baseball. !(https://www.gamespot.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/HPIA9Qia4AAF66c.jpg) Coming later today around noon PT / 3 PM ET, the New Threads Trade Deadline program contains a 99-rated Tarik Skubal. The other players and their ratings are as follows: - Jo Adell (98) - Taylor Ward (98) - Arjun Nimmala (98) - Ryan Zeferjahn (97) - Luke Weaver (97) - Luis Castillo (97) - Liam Hicks (97) - Daulton Varsho (97) - AJ Minter (97) Yes, Skubal is the only 99-rated card of the bunch (though the extra booster packs contain a few more), and his real-life counterpart joins a team that already had the absolute best starting rotation in all of baseball. It makes the Dodgers even more of a ridiculously stacked team, and Skubal said he has no sympathy(https://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/article/tarik-skubal-doesnt-sympathize-with-those-blaming-dodgers-for-ruining-baseball-after-trading-for-him-004056313.html) for people who blame the Dodgers for buying the best team every year. That being said, the Dodgers have been on a very rough stretch since the trade, so perhaps some form of karma is rebalancing the scales. Skubal better enjoy the next few months of playing in his Dodgers uniform, because there's a pretty good chance he's not going to get to do it again until 2028. The CBA between the players and the league is set to expire, and a proposed salary cap is the biggest sticking point.

🎮 Multi-platformWhy GTA 6 Doesn’t Have Early Access, According To Take-Two
Take-Two Interactive's quarterly earnings call had plenty of new information about GTA 6(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/grand-theft-auto-6-everything-we-know/1100-6503729/), including why the game won't have an early access perk. Speaking to investors, CEO Strauss Zelnick was also asked why Take-Two Interactive is selling fewer special versions of GTA 6--so far only the $80 standard and $100 ultimate editions are available to preorder--and why early access wasn't offered as an additional perk, when it is available for its line of 2K sports games like NBA, WWE, and PGA Tour. Zelnick explained that the pricing decisions ultimately belong to Rockstar Games, and while it could have charged more for features like paid early access, the studio was once again aiming to provide value to its consumers(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/take-two-defends-gta-6s-80-price-calls-it-phenomenal-value/). "Given the hype around this title, I mean, I think we could have made any number of other pricing choices," Zelnick explained. "But as I said earlier, our focus is on delivering way more value than what we charge for something." Essentially, Zelnick explained that both GTA 6 editions are already value-packed products in the eyes of the company, and while preorders are exceptionally high, he did note that these could always be canceled before the game launches on November 19. That has led to Take-Two Interactive being cautiously optimistic, but the company is still expecting GTA 6 to help increase its revenue by 20%(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/unsurprisingly-gta-6-has-take-two-predicting-a-massively-profitable-year-ahead/) in its current financial year. Early access has become more commonplace for new games over the last couple of years, and in addition to Take-Two, companies like Microsoft make extensive use of it to give players extra incentive to buy a premium edition of a game--which obviously costs more than the regular version. Forza Horizon 6 offered a headstart when it launched earlier this year, and Gears of War: E-Day(https://www.gamespot.com/games/gears-of-war-e-day/) will also have an early access period for owners of the game's special edition. Meanwhile, GTA 6 launches on November 19(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/gta-6-has-not-been-delayed-still-on-track-for-its-november-launch/) for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, and you can check out an "extended" preview(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/gta-6-extended-look-coming-august-27-on-netflix/) of the game first on Netflix on August 27--if you're a Netflix subscriber.
