Activision has officially announced Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, which is being led by series creator Infinity Ward. You can also read GameSpot's hands-on preview of MW4. When will Modern Warfare 4 be released? Modern Warfare 4 releases on October 23, 2026. That's about a month before GTA 6 launches on November 19. Who is making Modern Warfare 4? Infinity Ward is leading the development of Modern Warfare 4. The studio created the Call of Duty sub-brand and is working alongside a number of other teams on it. In alphabetical order, these include Activision Central Design, Activision Central Technology, Activision QA, Activision Shanghai, Beenox, Demonware, High Moon Studios, Raven Software, Sledgehammer Games, and Treyarch. The Nintendo release is notable given that Call of Duty has been absent from Nintendo's platforms since 2013's Wii U version of Call of Duty: Ghosts. Microsoft pledged to bring Call of Duty to Switch as part of its appeal to regulators to approve the company's blockbuster buyout of Activision, and now it's finally happening. The Switch 2 edition is a native version, Activision said. Additionally, the company said the PC version of MW4 is being developed by Beenox and that MW4 in general has been "built with the PC community in mind." To that end, Activision said PC players can expect "more ways to tune performance, visual fidelity, responsiveness, and customization." Modern Warfare 4 won’t be on Game Pass All of Microsoft’s first-party new releases come to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate on day one–or at least that used to be the case. In April this year, Microsoft announced drastic changes to Game Pass(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/game-pass-gets-price-drop-new-call-of-duty-games-no-longer-included/1100-6539523/) that included a price decrease and the announcement that new Call of Duty games will no longer launch into Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass. They will, however, arrive on Game Pass after about a year. What this means for MW4 is that anyone hoping to play it as part of their Game Pass subscription is out of luck and will need to pay for it outright. Modern Warfare 4 preorders Preorders for Modern Warfare 4 are not yet open, so there is no word yet on the game's various editions and their price points. Modern Warfare 4 story, setting, and characters As rumored, Modern Warfare 4 centers its action on the Korea peninsula, with players taking on the role of Private Park. He is a young Korean "grunt" soldier(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/call-of-duty-modern-warfare-4-puts-you-in-the-boots-of-a-grunt/) who is going to battle for the first time. Park and his team are trying to overcome impossible odds in what Activision described as a "zero-to-hero" journey. One of the most famous members of Modern Warfare's Task Force 141, Captain Price, returns for Modern Warfare 4, but he's no longer part of the team. While the game is centered on Korea, Modern Warfare 4 will put players into battles in various places around the world, including New York, Paris, and Mumbai. What's new for multiplayer? Multiplayer is Call of Duty's bread and butter, and of course it's returning for Modern Warfare 4. Activision said players can expect multiplayer that feels "grounded," which would be in keeping with tradition for the Modern Warfare series. This may be welcome news to those who do not enjoy the futuristic setup in the recent Black Ops games where players can run on walls and use cloaking devices, among other things. Activision is promising the "most authentic" Modern Warfare gunplay in Modern Warfare 4, with updates coming for bullet trajectory, weapon motion, Operator stance, camera, audio, FOV, and target visibility. Additionally, there is no more weapon bloom for hipfire. In terms of maps, there will be 12 all-new core 6v6 maps at launch, and that's notable because some previous Call of Duty games launched with recycled maps from previous games. Beyond the core modes, MW4 has dedicated Gunfight maps and Big War maps featuring vehicles and large-scale battles. There is also a new "Gunny" system for weapon customization, along with new "Apex" attachments that players unlock when they reach max weapon progression. Open beta An open beta for MW4 was confirmed by Activision, but there is no word yet on any specifics like what it will include or when it will begin. The return of DMZ DMZ was a new mode for 2022’s Modern Warfare II, and while some people enjoyed and embraced it, others said it felt like a half-baked idea. The large-scale extraction-based mode had players amassing contracts, taking on missions, and fighting enemies in a variety of settings. As rumored, DMZ is returning in Modern Warfare 4, but that's the extent of what we know so far. Presumably more details about DMZ will be divulged later on. Not expected to outsell GTA 6 The Call of Duty franchise is a juggernaut, but Call of Duty games are not known to outsell new releases from Rockstar Games, and that trend is expected to continue this year with MW4. Activision has officially announced Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, and it's being released slightly earlier than some might expect. MW4 is set for launch on Friday, October 23 across PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Switch 2. That's 27 days before GTA 6 releases on November 19. For comparison, 2025's Black Ops 7 launched on November 14. Not on Game Pass Another notable development for MW4 is that it will not be available on Xbox Game Pass. As Microsoft announced previously, new Call of Duty games are no longer included with Game Pass(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/game-pass-gets-price-drop-new-call-of-duty-games-no-longer-included/1100-6539523/), and instead won't come to the subscription program for about a year. This is part of a new "windowing" strategy whereby Microsoft excludes certain key games from Game Pass at launch. MW4 will, however, be available on Nintendo Switch 2. That's notable because the Call of Duty series hasn't shown up on a Nintendo platform since 2013. MW4's development is being led by Infinity Ward, the studio that created the sub-brand. It'll debut that day alongside the game's other versions for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. The game is not coming to last-gen consoles. If you've played the Call of Duty games in recent years--arguably any of them past the first handful--then you know the games tend to star heroes with near-superhuman reflexes, athletic abilities, and rapid decision-making. For Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, Infinity Ward is taking a step back, partially, from these larger-than-life heroes and putting you back in the boots(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/infinity-ward-makes-key-improvements-to-the-formula-with-call-of-duty-modern-warfare-4/) of a regular "grunt" soldier. The decision to move back to regular soldiers--which should be familiar to Call of Duty 2 players, for example--came about as Infinity Ward developed the setup for Modern Warfare 4's story. Set during a renewed war between North and South Korea, it's a conflict with global ramifications, and the mandatory military service ingrained in South Korean society played a big role. You'll spend part of the game as the Korean soldier Private Park, who is facing combat for the first time. "South Korea has a particularity that every single person there has to serve in the military when they're young, and so for us, that's an interesting perspective," Infinity Ward co-studio head Jack O'Hara told GameSpot during a pre-reveal game presentation. With the story seemingly breaking new ground we didn't touch in the old-school Modern Warfare games, it remains to be seen if this can inject some new life into the series at a key moment. More than a decade after it originally released, The Witcher 3 is getting new content, Songs of the Past. Developer CD Projekt Red wants fans to know that this is an "expansion" and not "DLC." The terms may be synonymous to some, but the Polish developer does not see them as being the same. "For us at CDPR, DLCs are small pieces of content we release for free--like the additional outfits for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Expansions, on the other hand, are major pieces of content providing lots of hours of gameplay, including new story, characters, etc," CD Projekt Red's Marcin Łukaszewski said(https://x.com/veryfishysushi/status/2059576563163619378). Another developer from CD Projekt Red, Paweł Sasko, pointed to comments from Cyberpunk 2077 actor Idris Elba(https://x.com/pawesasko/status/2059741978510672130?s=46) to make his point about DLC vs. expansions. "Just to be clear, it's not DLC. It's an expansion," Elba said about the Phantom Liberty expansion for Cyberpunk 2077. "You know why? Because we do expansions. Big. Massive. Monster. More than hoodies, hidden blades, or alien artifacts, one of the defining features of Assassin's Creed is the Leap of Faith. Ever since the first game, players have been yeeting their characters off of tall structures and into conveniently placed bales of hay, and now, several people are attempting that feat in real life. Ahead of the release of Assassin's Creed: Black Flag Resynced(https://www.gamespot.com/games/assassins-creed-black-flag-resynced/), Red Bull Gaming organized a tropical jaunt for several athletes, tasking them with recreating Edward Kenway's signature leaps from the game. In total, the Red Bull crew took on four challenges: Jumping from a cliff into the ocean water, leaping from the top of a pirate ship, falling into a pile of sand, and capping the challenge with a Leap of Faith into hay. Unsurprisingly, jumping into water resulted in zero fatalities, although there was some hesitation from the group when they were on the ship, due to the motion of the waves making the vessel sway about. https://youtu.be/LcTqca3NV18 Once they got to the third challenge, things started to look a little hairy, with the sandpile not exactly providing the softest landing. The highest point from which a jump was executed was from 12 meters, with one of the Red Bull athletes coming dangerously close to missing the sand entirely. From there, the crew took on a classic Leap of Faith into hay, upping the ante and breaking the previous world record by jumping from a height of 18 meters--and in full Assassin's Creed cosplay. Once again, the team miraculously survived, setting a new world record in the process. It's an impressive feat, although the 2016 Assassin's Creed movie contains an even more hair-raising recreation of the Leap of Faith(https://youtu.be/PuZJz80w00U). One of the highest freefalls performed in decades at that time, stuntman Damien Walters jumped from a height of 38 meters, landing on a massive stunt mattress below--good thing it wasn't a pile of
