Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave Nintendo Direct Announced For This Week
A new Nintendo Direct has been announced, and this time, the focus is on Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave(https://www.gamespot.com/games/fire-emblem-fortunes-weave/). If you're interested, you can tune in at 7 AM PT / 10 AM ET on August 4 to watch the broadcast. Nintendo says that you can expect "roughly 20 minutes" of new information about the game. One of several big first-party games from Nintendo scheduled for launch this year, Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave is the first game in the longrunning tactical-RPG series to be developed exclusively for Switch 2 consoles. The last time it was in the spotlight was during the June Nintendo Direct, where a few more details about the game were revealed. The game will feature four characters competing to win the Dagosian Games--a high-stakes tournament--with combat taking place inside of an arena. This is a departure from the battlefields of previous Fire Emblem games, but outside of the tournament, there'll still be opportunities to explore new locations and deal with bandits who are hoarding treasure. Each of the four main champions also possesses a special crest that can grant them special abilities in combat, and it looks like there'll be social events to take part in when you're not fighting for glory. Launching on September 17, Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave enters a stacked month of new releases(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/september-2026-is-packed-with-games-trying-to-avoid-gta-6/) as several games are attempting to hit the ground running before heavyweight titles like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4(https://www.gamespot.com/games/call-of-duty-modern-warfare-4/) and GTA 6(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/grand-theft-auto-6-everything-we-know/1100-6503729/) descend. Preorders are open(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/fire-emblem-fortunes-weave-is-getting-a-collectors-edition/) for Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave, with the standard edition priced at $70 - $80 depending on whether you want a physical version or a download code. You can also pick up the Special Edition of the game for $120, which includes the full physical edition of the game and a selection of collectibles.

Two Unreleased Virtual Boy Games Are Coming To Nintendo Switch Online
Three decades ago, Nintendo discontinued its Virtual Boy console after it failed to catch on. But now, two of the unreleased Virtual Boy titles are set to make their debut on Nintendo Switch Online. Nintendo has announced that D-Hopper and Zero Racers(https://www.gamespot.com/games/zero-racers/) will be available on Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pass on August 4. D-Hopper was originally known as Dragon Hopper(https://www.gamespot.com/games/dragon-hopper/), and it's a fantasy action-adventure game that puts players in control of a prince as he attempts to bring down an evil regime and free his loved ones, fairies, and elemental spirits from their grasp. Zero Racers is a racing game that was inspired by the SNES hit F-Zero. Both D-Hopper and Zero Racers would have been released in 1996 if Nintendo hadn't pulled Virtual Boy from store shelves. https://twitter.com/NintendoAmerica/status/2083002205519413357 Nintendo is also catering to Virtual Boy fans with its latest additions to Nintendo Music. The following games have been added to that lineup and are available to listen to now. - Virtual Boy Wario Land - Mario Clash - Galactic Pinball - Teleroboxer - Mario's Tennis Although Oculus Rift creator Palmer Luckey once opined that Virtual Boy had "hurt the VR industry(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/virtual-boy-hurt-the-vr-industry-rift-creator-palm/1100-6433674/)," Nintendo surprised players by adding support for select Virtual Boy titles(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/nintendo-switch-online-expansion-pass-is-adding-nintendos-biggest-flop-virtual-boy/1100-6534695/) in September 2025. It even released a plastic replica Virtual Boy as well as its cardboard counterpart to recreate the experience of playing the games in a primitive form of VR. As an unexpected benefit, players can also use the Virtual Boy replicas to access VR modes(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/the-new-virtual-boy-headset-lets-you-access-some-obscure-vr-modes-in-switch-games/1100-6538182/) in Switch titles like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey. Additionally, the GameCube's signature Mario game, Super Mario Sunshine(https://www.gamespot.com/games/super-mario-sunshine/), will arrive on Nintendo Switch Online(https://x.com/NintendoAmerica/status/2082994655705125308) on August 13.

Super Mario Sunshine Joins Nintendo Switch Online GameCube Library Next Month
!Game Informer News(https://gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/bodydefault/public/2026/07/31/e6439c1d/super-mario-sunshine-wallpaper.jpg.webp) Super Mario Sunshine is the next classic GameCube title joining Nintendo Switch Online’s classic game catalog. The 2002 platformer arrives on August 13. Super Mario Sunshine sees Mario and friends travel to the tropical Delfino Island, where an imposter known as Shadow Mario vandalizes the destination with graffiti and abducts Princess Peach. Mario teams up with a talking water hose/jetpack named F.L.U.D.D. to clean up the island and rescue Peach. Sunshine’s jetpack-centric twist on 3D platforming, combined with blasting enemies and levels using F.L.U.D.D., made it both a celebrated and polarizing entry in the franchise. Square Enix Insists That Cursed Kingdom Hearts Art Was Not AI-Generated
Last month's Nintendo Direct(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/nintendo-direct-june-2026-all-the-biggest-announcements-and-games/) was full of all types of treats for Kingdom Hearts fans, including the announcement that native versions of the entire Kingdom Hearts trilogy will be coming to Switch 2(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/all-the-new-switch-2-ports-confirmed-in-nintendo-direct-june-2026/) via the release of The Kingdom Hearts Collection I-III. Players did not respond well to the trilogy's key art, which Square Enix shared on X(https://x.com/KINGDOMHEARTS/status/2064362651036369250) shortly after the announcement. Players quickly noticed several strange details in the image, and accused Square Enix of using generative AI(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/players-think-kingdom-hearts-new-art-is-ai-generated/) to create it. GameSpot reached out for comment at the time, and Square Enix has now decided to clear things up. According to a statement shared with GameSpot, The Kingdom Hearts Collection I-III art is not the result of AI. "We're aware of feedback regarding recent Kingdom Hearts visuals," reads the statement, which was shared via phone call with a Square Enix PR rep. "These assets were created by our development team without the use of generative AI, and the issues resulted from human error." Some of the "issues" being referenced here include Donald Duck having 4 fingers on one hand and 5 on the other, the hands on the clocktower appearing warped, the Keyblade's keychain links appearing uneven, Sora's crown-shaped belt chain links melting into each other, the absence of the crown-shaped pattern usually seen on the bottom of Sora's shoes, and various clothing zippers seeming to fade into nothing, among other issues. "Quality is extremely important to us, and updated assets have been implemented where appropriate," the statement continued. !An altered version of The Kingdom Hearts Collection I-III's new key art, which replaces Donald Duck's five-fingered hand with a proper, four-fingered hand.(https://www.gamespot.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/KHfixedartSquare.png?w=636) The new art fixes Donald's hand, but other odd flaws remain. The X post that started it all is still up, but elsewhere online, the image has been replaced with a new version. (The official trailer's YouTube thumbnail features a third version of the image(https://i.ytimg.com/vi/ldMqRmTwy80/maxresdefault.jpg), in which Donald's five-fingered hand is simply obscured.) The new image still features some of the strange details players pointed out in the original key art, including the warped crowns on Sora's belt chain, the lack of crowns on his shoe soles, and and the strange links on Mickey's Keyblade keychain. The clocktower's hands look a bit straighter, but for the most part, it appears the main goal was correcting Donald Duck's five-fingered hand, which now features the correct four digits. Square Enix did not provide any commentary as to how the original image came to be.

Final Fantasy 14 On Switch 2 Is A Sobering Reminder That Storage Isn’t Cheap
One of the biggest MMOs of all time, Final Fantasy 14(https://www.gamespot.com/games/final-fantasy-xiv-online/), is coming to Switch 2(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/final-fantasy-14-is-coming-to-switch-2-but-with-an-annoying-caveat/1100-6539621/) next month, and you're going to want to clear a lot of space to install the game. According to the Switch eShop listing(https://www.nintendo.com/us/store/products/final-fantasy-xiv-online-switch-2/) for the game, Final Fantasy 14 will take up 117.2GB of available storage capacity, gobbling up almost half of the handheld's built-in SSD. As for why Final Fantasy 14 is so massive, that comes down to the Switch 2 version offering the base game and its five expansions--Heavensward, Stormblood, Shadowbringers, Endwalker, and Dawntrail. Each one is a substantial piece of content that offers new stories, classes, and activities within the world of Eorzea, and when you factor in how Final Fantasy 14 has been running for over a decade, then you'll realize just how much the game has grown since then. It's also worth noting that Square Enix games are notorious for their large install sizes on Switch 2, as recent releases take up a chunk of SSD real estate on the console. The recent Final Fantasy 7 games--Remake and Rebirth--are 90GB and 95GB in size, respectively, and serve as a solid reminder to grab a microSD Express card to beef up storage capacity. https://youtu.be/Q7VVqo8644 That's an easy and expensive solution, as these thumb-sized storage solutions have shot up in price lately. Due to global NAND flash shortages and a surge in demand from AI data centers, prices have doubled in recent months. For example, the Lexar 1TB microSD Express card originally retailed for $220, but currently, you can expect to pay $350 for one of these. Other affordable options like the Samsung P9 256GB card (was $55, now $80), the Sandisk 512GB (was $100, now $130), and the Lexar Play Pro 1TB (was $220, now $350) are all considerably more expensive now than they were a year ago. Outside of the Switch 2, things aren't looking too good(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/the-console-market-has-gone-from-bad-to-worse-as-the-prices-continue-to-rise-and-the-audience-shifts-towards-other-gaming-experiences/) for PC and consoles either. The components shortage has seen RAM prices go through the roof, while SSDs and GPUs are also incredibly expensive. Console prices have gone up(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/ps5-xbox-and-switch-2-heres-how-their-prices-have-changed-since-launch/), more increases(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/xbox-may-have-another-price-hike-up-its-sleeve-in-2027/) are being forecast, and upgrading your PC requires the average consumer to buy a single part per month before they can overhaul their system.
