The biggest topic in the games industry right now is the debate around physical media, with Sony kickstarting the conversation by killing its production of PlayStation discs(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/sony-confirms-playstation-disc-production-will-end-in-2028/) in January 2028. Everyone has thoughts about the company's decision, including Final Fantasy 7 Revelation(https://www.gamespot.com/games/final-fantasy-vii-revelation/) director Naoki Hamaguchi, who said he's trying to make a physical edition of the game happen. In a July 29 interview with GamesRadar+(https://www.gamesradar.com/games/final-fantasy/final-fantasy-7-revelation-director-wants-some-kind-of-physical-edition-for-the-rpg-but-he-cant-promise-it-as-sony-becomes-the-latest-to-shift-away-toward-digital/), Hamaguchi acknowledged that "the general trend" he's seeing is a shift towards downloadable games. However, he still believes that physical media is "a wonderful culture" and that "it would be a shame to lose that." As such, his team is working diligently to make sure that a physical version of Revelation comes out. "We're still having internal discussions on what the exact SKU product lineup is going to be for Revelation,” Hamaguchi said at Berlin's Final Fantasy 14 Fan Festival. "So I can't say anything particularly definitive at this point in time. "Each platform and first-party have their own specific rules and regulations that we need to take into account, and think about what format is actually going to be best for the game. These are the discussions that we're having at this point in time. I do hope that we'll be able to come up with something that is as close as possible as to what players and fans are going to want, but you’ll have to look forward to future announcements for that." Revelation is the third and final entry in the remake trilogy. Considering Revelation releases sometime in 2027, it stands to reason that it'd get a physical edition on PlayStation 5, too, since Sony isn't ending disc production until 2028. We'll see sometime in 2027. Although Revelation will bring an end to Cloud and friends' story, that may not actually be the end of the game itself. A recent leak suggested(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/even-the-end-of-final-fantasy-7-revelation-isnt-actually-the-end-leak-suggests/) that the upcoming action-RPG will receive a plethora of DLC, including some sort of "Story Expansion Pass" that may see Cloud and company explore a brand-new territory.
Rockstar Co-Founder And GTA Co-Creator On Physical Games: Companies Should Provide It If People Want It
Dan Houser, the co-founder of Rockstar Games and co-creator of the GTA franchise, has commented on the ongoing discussion and debate about physical games in the wake of Sony's decision to stop supporting discs in 2028(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/sony-confirms-playstation-disc-production-will-end-in-2028/). Jones said in the IGN interview that he understands how good it can feel to pop a disc into a console, but he also appreciates being able to, for example, download a game at the airport and then play it on a flight. Dan Houser, meanwhile, added, "I love physical media." Absurd Ventures is working on multiple open-world, action-adventure video game projects. One takes place in the sci-fi world of the company's A Better Paradise comic series, and the other takes place inside the studio's comedy satire world, Absurdaverse. Sony is no longer going to support physical game discs on PlayStation starting in January 2028. The company said it's doing this due to "shifting trends in consumer preference." Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Swings Into A Brand New Day
Spider-Man: Brand New Day officially swings into theaters this week, and to celebrate the return of the webhead, Marvel's Spider-Man 2(https://www.gamespot.com/games/marvels-spider-man-2/) on PS5 is getting a few upgrades. While developer Insomniac had previously revealed that the game would be updated with a new costume(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/marvels-spider-man-2-pulls-in-another-costume-from-the-movies/) based on the threads worn by Spider-Man actor Tom Holland, players can also grab a slick cel-shaded costume and some PS5 Pro enhancements. With Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls out next month, players can look forward to donning a costume that puts a fresh spin on the character. Featuring a cel-shaded design, the suit has a very anime-inspired aesthetic with its bold colors and a larger spider emblem on the chest. In comparison, the Brand New Day costume goes back to the basics of Spider-Man, offering a subtle texture and colors that pay homage to the classic comics and animated series starring the wallcrawler.
