Nintendo Reveals Digital Sales Up 90% Compared To Last Year, Switch 2 Units Top 23 Million, And More

!Game Informer News(https://gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/bodydefault/public/2025/04/02/12807291/switch2preorder.jpg.webp) Nintendo has released its latest financial earnings report(https://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/pdf/2026/260806e.pdf), covering the first quarter of the fiscal year, which encompasses April through June 2026. In it, the company has revealed that digital sales revenue is up 90% year-over-year, that the Switch 2 sold nearly 4 million units in those three months, and that, unsurprisingly, Mario Kart World(https://gameinformer.com/product/mario-kart-world) continues to be the best-selling game on the console. According to Nintendo, digital sales totaled 132.7 billion yen (or roughly $837 million), up 90% year-on-year, "mainly due to an increase in sales of downloadable versions of packaged software." This figure arrives just weeks after Sony announced it will stop manufacturing discs for PlayStation games in 2028(https://gameinformer.com/2026/07/01/playstation-will-cease-production-of-physical-discs-for-new-games-in-january-2028), sparking an uproar among players who want to purchase physical copies. With rumors swirling that Xbox may follow suit, Nintendo could be the last of the Big Three console makers to release its games in a physical format (though players argue whether Nintendo's current go-to solution for physical releases, Game-Key Cards, is any different from a digital download key). Elsewhere in the company's earnings report, it states the "Nintendo Switch 2 hardware maintained strong sales momentum, with sales totaling 3.82 million units," bringing the total up to 23.68 million. Software units total 58.17 million. Looking at Switch 2 software, the company says Yoshi and the Mysterious Book(https://gameinformer.com/review/yoshi-and-the-mysterious-book/low-stakes-charm), Star Fox(https://gameinformer.com/review/star-fox-2026/mission-complete), and Pokemon Pokopia(https://gameinformer.com/review/pokemon-pokopia/a-pleasant-paradise) "sold well" but stops short of giving exact numbers for this fiscal quarter. Nintendo did reveal that Switch 2 software sales totaled 9.46 million during this latest fiscal quarter, adding that Switch software in the form of Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream(https://gameinformer.com/review/tomodachi-life-living-the-dream/you-get-what-you-give) reached 7.94 million units. As a result of these earnings, Nintendo says it is not making changes to its original financial forecast for the fiscal year. "Nintendo Switch 2 is now in its second year since launch in June 2025 and sales continue to be strong," the report reads. "We aim to maintain momentum for the hardware and see it delivered together with software into the hands of a wide range of consumers." The company highlights recent releases and upcoming launches, including Splatoon Raiders (launched in July) and Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave, Nintendo Switch Sports Resort, and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (the remake) coming throughout the rest of the year. To close out this look at Nintendo's latest fiscal report, here are the sales numbers(https://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/en/finance/software/index.html) for various Switch 2 and Switch games released so far (in total): - Mario Kart World: 15.39 million units – Our Review(https://gameinformer.com/review/mario-kart-world/roam-if-you-want-to) - Donkey Kong Bananza: 4.78 million units – Our Review(https://gameinformer.com/review/donkey-kong-bananza/breaking-through-to-something-new) - Pokemon Legends: Z-A – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition: 3.99 million units – Our Review(https://gameinformer.com/review/pokemon-legends-z-a/maintaining-rank) - Pokemon Pokopia: 3.68 million units – Our Review(https://gameinformer.com/review/pokemon-pokopia/a-pleasant-paradise) - Kirby Air Riders: 1.90 million units – Our Review(https://gameinformer.com/review/kirby-air-riders/star-ships-were-meant-to-fly) - Super Mario Party Jamboree – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition: 1.15 million units – Our Review(https://gameinformer.com/review/super-mario-party-jamboree-nintendo-switch-2-edition-jamboree-tv/solid-base-with-tepid) Do any of these numbers surprise you? Nintendo Coy On Star Fox Numbers After Super Mario Galaxy Movie Push

After a decade of dormancy, the Star Fox franchise has seen a huge push from Nintendo in two significant ways. For starters, Fox McCloud had a pretty big presence in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/fox-mccloud-is-in-the-super-mario-galaxy-movie-over-a-decade-since-his-last-game/1100-6539028/), which made over $1 billion worldwide at the box office(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/the-super-mario-galaxy-movie-reaches-1-billion-and-its-the-first-2026-film-to-do-so/). Then, in June, Star Fox, a remake of Star Fox 64, came out exclusively on Switch 2(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/star-fox-for-nintendo-switch-2-announced/1100-6539827/). However, the strong marketing blitz hasn't seemed to lead to a smash-hit sales success for the game--at least not yet. Nintendo has released new financial results(https://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/pdf/2026/260806e.pdf) for April through June (the first quarter of fiscal 2027 for the company), and there are no dedicated sales numbers provided for Star Fox. Instead, it's stated that the Switch 2 exclusive has "performed steadily"--a phrase also used for Yoshi and the Mysterious Book(https://www.gamespot.com/reviews/yoshi-and-the-mysterious-book-is-about-curiosity-not-conquest/1900-6418493/). We can glean that Star Fox failed to sell 1 million copies, since it's missing from that list on other financial data(https://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/pdf/2026/2608062e.pdf). To be fair to Star Fox, these fiscal results only cover six days of sales for the Switch 2 game. However, this title would likely be more front-loaded, and nothing is stopping Nintendo from adding that the title has reached specific sales milestones in the past month. "Performed steadily" doesn't really inspire confidence after choosing Fox of all characters to get screentime in the Mario movie sequel. For more, check out GameSpot's Star Fox review(https://www.gamespot.com/reviews/star-fox-review-switch-2/). In addition, Switch 2 owners can try before they buy with a free demo for the on-rails shooter(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/you-can-play-star-fox-today-thanks-to-a-new-demo/). Minecraft Is Coming To Switch 2 In October, With An Upgrade Path For Switch Owners

Minecraft(https://www.gamespot.com/games/minecraft/) is officially launching October 27 for Nintendo Switch 2, bringing with it what developer Mojang calls "Vibrant Visuals" as well as an upgrade path for original Switch owners. While Minecraft has been playable on the Switch 2 thanks to backwards compatibility, the Switch 2 version will bring some improvements that take advantage of Nintendo's latest hardware. In a blog post(https://www.minecraft.net/en-us/article/minecraft-for-nintendo-switch-2-release-date), Mojang labeled the Switch 2 version's graphical improvements as a new "Vibrant Visuals" experience that will offer enhanced lighting, shadows, and more. Not everything will support "Vibrant Visuals," according to Mojang. Playing in split-screen or using certain worlds or content from the marketplace will not feature the visual upgrades. One piece of content that will, however, is the Super Mario Mash-Up pack that is exclusive to the Nintendo versions of Minecraft, which is being updated to support the improvements. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pBL7nJLH8ro Mojang confirmed there will be a digital upgrade path available for those who purchased Minecraft on the original Switch. Whether that upgrade will be free or cost a fee remains to be seen, with Mojang simply stating there will be "more details to follow." For those worried about losing their worlds and progress, Mojang has previously confirmed save data from the original Switch version of Minecraft will carry over to the Switch 2. In other Minecraft news, Mojang recently added the ability to sit(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/minecraft-is-adding-a-highly-requested-feature-its-been-missing-for-17-years/). A sequel to Minecraft Dungeons(https://www.gamespot.com/games/minecraft-dungeons-ii/) is releasing in September, with the A Minecraft Movie sequel slated for 2027. Minecraft itself looks like it's becoming an even bigger focus for parent company Microsoft amidst recent organizational changes (and mass layoffs(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/xbox-layoffs-studio-closures-and-spin-offs-everything-announced-today/)). Mojang, as well as Candy Crush developer King, now report directly to new Xbox CEO Asha Sharma, something that has been a cause for concern among fans who worry Microsoft meddling may ruin Minecraft(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/microsoft-please-dont-ruin-minecraft/).

We May Already Know One Major Diablo 4 BlizzCon Announcement

We May Already Know One Major Diablo 4 BlizzCon Announcement

Diablo 4(https://www.gamespot.com/games/diablo-iv/) is reportedly headed to Nintendo Switch 2 this September, in what may be the first of multiple Diablo-related announcements coming as part of this year's BlizzCon. As detailed by Dealabs(https://www.dealabs.com/magazine/diablo-iv-debarque-enfin-sur-switch-2-on-vous-devoile-sa-date-de-sortie-prix-et-version-physique-en-exclusivite-61635) reporter billbil-kun, game classification organizations in Indonesia and Taiwan both point towards a Switch 2 version of Diablo 4 existing, with Dealabs independently reporting a September 15 or 18 release date. The site also reports it will allegedly retail for $70 and receive a physical release, though it will only be a code in a box and not a physical cartridge. What's currently unclear is whether or not Diablo 4 on Switch 2 will include both of the game's two expansions, including the most recent, Lord of Hatred. The base version of Diablo 4 currently retails for $50 on other platforms, with a $70 "Age of Hatred" collection including both expansions also available. That could be an indication the Switch 2 version of developer Blizzard's ARPG will include the complete Diablo 4 package, but that remains unconfirmed for now. When this new way to play Diablo 4 will be officially revealed remains to be seen. It's certainly possible it could be announced at Gamescom August 26-30, where Blizzard parent company Xbox will have a presence. However, it seems more likely the port will be announced as part of BlizzCon on September 12-13, with the game's alleged release date being just a few days later. It wouldn't be the first time Diablo appeared on a Nintendo platform. Blizzard previously released both Diablo 3 and Diablo 2: Resurrected on Nintendo Switch. It's been a big year for Diablo 4 already, with the game's Lord of Hatred expansion being well received, even if its current season caught flak from fans for major changes to how Mythic items work(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/diablo-4-season-14s-worst-mythic-change-is-no-more-not-every-idea-lands/). Blizzard will be revealing more details about the game's next season at BlizzCon, but has already confirmed it will add classic items from previous Diablo games(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/diablo-4-season-15-is-adding-stone-of-jordan-and-other-iconic-items-from-diablos-past/) as well as allow players to use the same character each season(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/diablo-4-will-finally-let-you-play-the-same-character-each-season/). There will likely be other Diablo-related announcements as well. As for BlizzCon, Blizzard has certainly been hyping up this year's show. Blizzard president Johanna Faries said earlier this year that 2026 is Blizzard's "biggest year yet"(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/blizzards-biggest-year-yet-coming-in-2026-for-35th-anniversary-president-says/1100-6537061/) and that it's cooking up "major swings" for its franchises that will be revealed at the show. "I have total confidence that the teams are going to come very, very big, both with the heart and soul of what I think our core-most fans long for in a BlizzCon, but also bringing some very new things to the table," Faries said.

Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave Direct Reveals True Protagonist And Plot, Details Gameplay Systems

!Game Informer News(https://gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/bodydefault/public/2026/08/04/1955ed59/nintendoswitch2fefwscrn15.jpg.webp) This morning’s Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave Nintendo Direct featured a 20-minute gameplay deep dive into the upcoming strategy RPG. The presentation broke down classes and non-combat activities and revealed the game’s true structure. As previously detailed,(https://gameinformer.com/nintendo-direct/2026/06/09/fire-emblem-fortunes-weave-has-four-playable-protagonists-and-a) Fortune’s Weave centers on four playable protagonists who enter the Heroic Games, a gladiator-style arena tournament, to have their wish granted: Cai, Dietrich, Theodora, and Leda. You can switch between playing each one at any time, with progress for each one saved, allowing you to experience each character’s narrative in parallel. This plays into the game’s main theme of multiple fortunes intertwining. However, the twist is that this era is actually set in the past. Fortune’s Weave’s true plot is set five years in the future, where the world has been destroyed by the returning demon god Balor. The progenitor god Sothis has summoned the one soul capable of stopping him, a nameless hero clad in white who is the game’s true protagonist. To avoid facing Balor alone, this hero travels to the past to influence the fates of the four champions in order to assemble them in the future to save the world. Arena combat involves choosing a team of units and placing them on the field in traditional Fire Emblem fashion. Units can wield swords, gauntlets, spears, axes, bows, and magic, each with different properties and even forms (such as a gun(!)). Unleash Combat Arts deal greater damage at the expense of weapon durability, while Blaze Arts unleash bespoke special moves at the expense of HP. For example, Kai can blast a fireball that deals burn damage, Dietrich can instantly teleport to new squares, and Leda can buff surrounding allies and summon a monster to the field. After each move, you can rewind to any previous point in battle to redo any mistakes. The game’s classes are divided between Beginner, Specialty, and Advanced. Here’s a breakdown of each one, as detailed by Nintendo. - Beginner – There are five Beginner Classes, each dedicated to playing a foundational role in combat. They include gladiators who excel in handling weapons, diviners who wield magic, ornius riders with increased movement range and more. - Specialty – There are over 10 Specialty Classes, each with specific abilities. Armored knights offer ironclad defense, wing soldiers can leap obstacles and cover long distances, charioteers can strike multiple enemies in a straight line, and more. - Advanced – These classes are masters of their skills. Cataphracts have the mobility of horses and are heavily armored; guardians are skilled with white magic and spears; and elephant riders fight astride their giant mounts, to name a few. Between matches, Free Time occurs. You can prepare for future battles by training in the arena or by watching rivals battle to gather intel on them. The shopping arcade offers new weapons and enhancements. At Temple Row, you can volunteer at certain temples to temporarily gain stat buffs in battle, such as reduced damage. Taking certification exams lets units learn a new class, provided they have prerequisite skills. You can also take on quests from townsfolk, which must be finished within a deadline. Certain citizens can be recruited to your cause, though some require gifts or a meal to convince them to join. Inns let you lodge, eat, and pass time to gain resources automatically. Bonded characters converse in cinematics, raising their bonds. Outside of Dagsion, you can explore a world map to visit towns, gather information to find treasures, and battle in random encounters. You can also find dungeons to get materials for weapons and other rewards. Interestingly, dungeon battles unfold as traditional turn-based battles instead of taking place on a grid. The presentation concluded with smaller updates. Nintendo Music will be updated to feature a selection of tracks from Fortune’s Weave, such as the main theme. The Nintendo Today app also has new Fire Emblem themes coming tomorrow, along with new information leading up to launch. A new Ask the Developer article will be published on September 15. Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave is coming to Switch 2 on September 17. !(https://gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/entitybrowserthumbnail/public/2026/08/04/b04617b2/nintendoswitch2fefwscrn21.jpg.webp)!(https://gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/entitybrowserthumbnail/public/2026/08/04/dcf1f374/nintendoswitch2fefwscrn07.jpg.webp)!(https://gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/entitybrowserthumbnail/public/2026/08/04/5e159fe9/nintendoswitch2fefwscrn16.jpg.webp)!(https://gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/entitybrowserthumbnail/public/2026/08/04/57f28297/nintendoswitch2fefwscrn02.jpg.webp)!(https://gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/entitybrowserthumbnail/public/2026/08/04/f5305aa1/nintendoswitch2fefwscrn08.jpg.webp)
