Amazon Will Soon Be Out Of The MMO Business Entirely

Amazon Game Studios looks to be getting out of the MMO business entirely, handing Western operations of Throne and Liberty(https://www.gamespot.com/games/throne-and-liberty/) and Lost Ark(https://www.gamespot.com/games/lost-ark/) back to their respective developers. In two blog posts, Amazon Game Studios outlined its plans to transition both games to their South Korean creators in the coming months. For Throne and Liberty(https://www.playthroneandliberty.com/en-us/news/articles/throne-and-liberty-in-the-west), that transition will happen in Q4 2026 as NC (formerly NCSoft) takes over, while Lost Ark's(https://www.playlostark.com/en-us/news/articles/lost-ark-in-the-west) transition will happen in early 2027 and see Smilegate fully take the reins. While Amazon didn't develop the two games directly, it did publish both titles and handled live-service operations and customer support in the West. Both free-to-play games found success at launch (Lost Ark in particular saw huge numbers on Steam(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/amazon-reacts-to-lost-arks-massive-launch-reveals-new-player-numbers/1100-6500713/)), but have seen player counts dwindle over time. It doesn't sound like much will change in the near term. Both games will likely experience some downtime as Amazon hands over the keys, but the two games will each continue to operate in the West. Most player data and character progress made in the two games will also carry forward. In the case of Throne and Liberty, cross-progression will no longer work between Steam and consoles after the transition. For those who don't want to hand over all of their data, there will be an option to opt out of the transition. Doing so naturally means characters, items, and other progress won't be transferred, and players will essentially need to start again from scratch. For everyone else, the data transfer will essentially be seamless, with no action needed on the part of players aside from needing to accept a new terms of service upon logging in for the first time. Amazon just a few years ago looked to be establishing itself as a major player in the MMO space. It released its own MMO, New World(https://www.gamespot.com/games/new-world/), in 2021 to huge initial numbers on Steam, even if it didn't hold on to that momentum for long. It then followed up that success in 2022 by publishing and operating Lost Ark in the West, with Throne and Liberty following a similar playbook in 2024. There were also plans for Amazon to publish the anime MMO Blue Protocol, though the game's Western release was instead canceled(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/amazon-and-bandai-namco-cancel-western-release-for-mmo-as-service-ends-in-japan/1100-6526156/) entirely. Flash forward to now and the house of Bezos has completely washed its hands of the genre. Amazon announced earlier this year that New World's servers will go offline in early 2027(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/amazons-big-mmo-that-started-strong-is-shutting-down/1100-6537436/), following a console release in 2024 and a string of well-received updates that had players optimistic for the future prior to the shutdown announcement. The creators of New World were also working on a Lord of the Rings MMO, only for that to be reportedly canceled amidst layoffs at Amazon Game Studios(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/amazon-cuts-hit-video-game-division-reducing-work-on-mmos/1100-6535769/).

Here’s What The Genma Are Up To This Time In Onimusha: Way Of The Sword

!Game Informer News(https://gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/bodydefault/public/2026/07/15/53d2f96b/380onimusha06.jpg.webp) After a 20-year hiatus(https://gameinformer.com/exclusive-interview/2026/07/21/why-2026-was-the-year-to-bring-onimusha-back-after-a-20-year-gap), Capcom’s samurai action series Onimusha is back. Well, almost – the next installment, Onimusha: Way of the Sword, launches next month(https://gameinformer.com/2026/07/02/onimusha-way-of-the-sword-will-now-launch-three-weeks-earlier). Ahead of its release, I traveled to Capcom’s Osaka HQ in Japan to play never-before-seen parts of the game and interview the team making it for Game Informer’s latest cover(https://gameinformer.com/cover-reveal/2026/07/16/cover-reveal-onimusha-way-of-the-sword) (and you can read the cover story right here(https://gameinformer.com/feature/2026/07/21/the-return-of-onimusha)). I’ve been writing exclusive features, interviews, and more from my time with Capcom, and you can read them all in the Onimusha: Way of the Sword hub(https://gameinformer.com/Onimusha). Despite having played the demo a few times and playing through roughly three hours of the game within Capcom’s main development building in Japan, I still wasn’t quite sure what the Genma, the demonic enemies that plague early Edo-period Kyoto(https://gameinformer.com/exclusive-interview/2026/07/20/why-kyoto-was-the-perfect-setting-for-onimusha-way-of-the-sword), were up to in Way of the Sword. So, I asked lead writer Hiroshi Yamashita. !Game Informer News(https://gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/bodydefault/public/2026/07/15/02c3ec7f/380onimusha24.jpg.webp) “To set the scene, we obviously have the Genma in this game’s Japan, but we have the other realm in Hell, which is ruled by the Oni,” Yamashita says. “And within that space, the Genma also exist, and the Oni have kept them in place, but in the living world, from people killing each other and committing crimes, it generates this negative energy, this malice that you see in the game, and that attracts the Genma to the living world.” Yamashita says the Oni are meant to contain the Genma, but because of the growing malice happening on Earth, “and for certain reasons” he didn’t share due to spoilers, mysterious rifts appear in Kyoto that allow the Genma to seep into the real world and invade. “So, for the Genma, at a very basic level, their objective, their motives are pretty much just killing and eating – that’s what drives them,” Yamashita continues. “They’re these menacing invaders, but they’re only thinking on instinct. Within the Genma ranks, though, there are specific Genma who are maybe a little different and do have their own motivations and objectives. So, whilst the main Genma might not really have a specific objective because they’re just killing and spreading chaos, those others are more like scheming Genma. !Game Informer News(https://gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/bodydefault/public/2026/07/15/3da3521c/380onimusha18.jpg.webp) “What do they get out of the Genma invading and doing all this chaos? Killing does create more malice, and as the malice builds up, it’s building toward allowing these specific Genma to do something. That’s going to be the main driving force for Musashi – working to try and stop them from completing this objective.” Unfortunately, Yamashita wouldn’t spill any more on what that objective might be, but I did learn on this trip that Nobunaga, a recurring villainous figure, is not returning… so it’s safe to say the Genma aren’t trying to resurrect him (again). Previously showcased Genma that rank higher than the standard killers include Dokyo and Rasho-Gan, pictured below. Dokyo, especially, is in a Genma league of her own. Not only does she have a terrifying screen presence backed by a standout voice performance (from what I’ve heard so far), but she has a “special” and “unique” place in the wider story of Way of the Sword. But Yamashita says we’ll have to wait until the game’s launch next month to learn more. I’ll continue diving deeper into Capcom’s return to Onimusha as part of Game Informer’s month of Way of the Sword coverage. We’ll be publishing exclusive gameplay and behind-the-scenes videos (including a Rapid-Fire Interview) on the Game Informer YouTube channel(https://www.youtube.com/@gameinformer) as well. Keep an eye on the Onimusha: Way of the Sword coverage hub(https://gameinformer.com/Onimusha) so you don’t miss any of it. God Of War’s Christopher Judge Is Tired Of Video Game TV Adaptations Ignoring Game Creators🎮 Multi-platform

God Of War’s Christopher Judge Is Tired Of Video Game TV Adaptations Ignoring Game Creators

The live-action adaptation of God of War is on the way, but the voice of the iconic god-killer Kratos, Christopher Judge, has a bone to pick with the people behind game adaptations. As the actor explained, he's annoyed that these projects fail to hire anyone from the source material to work on them, as they tend to ignore the talent behind the success of those games. "My problem with all game adaptations is you have this pre-existing, successful property, and the first thing you do is not hire anyone associated with it," Judge said during a Fan Expo panel (via Reddit(https://www.reddit.com/r/GodofWar/comments/1vmazkd/christopherjudgesaysgameadaptionskeepmaking/)), using HBO's The Last of Us as an example. "The Last of Us--loved Pedro Pascal--were they better than the game cast? I saw a stage reading they did. It was unreal. I have no idea why you don't just take that cast, those writers, especially when you're going to do episodes that are shot-for-shot remakes of the game!" !4054335-playstationgifts0009god-of-war-ragnarok.jpg(https://www.gamespot.com/wp-content/uploads/original/1601/16018044/4054335-playstationgifts0009god-of-war-ragnarok.jpg?w=636) God of War Ragnarok The voice actors of The Last of Us have often been praised for elevating the story with their performances, and it's not too much of a stretch to imagine Baker playing the live-action version of Joel Miller. Of course, it's not that easy, as you have various factors to consider, like availability for a shoot and contract negotiations, as well as the fact that Pascal is a bigger star in comparison to Baker--Pascal is a household name who can draw audiences to watch the series based on the recognition factor alone. Baker did appear in the series, making a cameo(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/the-last-of-us-joel-actor-troy-baker-discusses-passing-the-baton-to-pedro-pascal/1100-6512081/) as a villain named James. Writing for video games and TV are also two vastly different things, but it wouldn't hurt to have some of those creatives around to assist with an adaptation in the writer's room. As Judge explained, if you're going to adapt games and do "shot-for-shot" remakes of them, hiring the writers behind them would be a smart move. "What are you thinking? These guys have been immersed in this world for 20 years, but someone's gonna know better?" Judge said about Amazon's God of War project. That show ran into trouble recently, as the original actor cast to play Kratos, Ryan Hurst, suffered a bicep tear(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/god-of-war-tv-show-forced-to-recast-kratos-after-serious-injury/) during filming. Forced to vacate the role, former WWE star Dave Bautista is now rumored to be in talks(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/wrong-gow-right-role-dave-bautista-reportedly-set-to-play-kratos-in-god-of-war-series/) to replace Hurst, who showed off just how shredded he got(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/ryan-hurst-shows-off-how-shredded-he-got-for-god-of-war-before-misfortune/) to play Kratos.

New Phantom Blade Zero Trailer Reveals Donnie Yen And An Upcoming State of Play

!Game Informer News(https://gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/bodydefault/public/2026/08/12/1774261a/phantombladezero-pre-ordertrailer10-37screenshot.jpg.webp) Yesterday, Phantom Blade Zero developer S-Game released a new look at its upcoming high-speed action game. At 11 minutes long, it's packed to the brim with flashy combat, uniquely designed enemies, and new story details (which have been scarce so far). The trailer ends with the reveal that Donnie Yen, an actor (John Wick 4, Rogue One) and martial artist, will appear in the game as Mó Yuan, providing the voice, face model, and motion capture. Yen is also listed as a creative consultant. You can view the trailer below. These set pieces are intense to an almost comical degree, reminding me of an animated show or even some of Resident Evil's zaniest action sequences. That said, it sounds like the trailer's opening encounter isn't even that far into the game. An accompanying post on the PlayStation blog(https://blog.playstation.com/2026/08/11/watch-the-phantom-blade-zero-gameplay-deep-dive-state-of-play-on-august-17-pre-orders-live-today/) from S-Game founder and CEO Soulframe Liang adds that, "Battling enemies atop a speeding wagon and crossing blades with former comrades like The Hunt are just the opening moments of Soul’s journey." The post continues to detail a special Phantom Blade Zero State of Play. The livestream airs next week on Monday, August 17 at 7 p.m. PT/ 10 p.m. ET/ 10 a.m. CST (note: that last start time technically takes place on Tuesday, August 18), and "will introduce never-before-seen characters central to our story while showing just how expressive players can be with their individual builds." If you missed it in the trailer's title, Phantom Blade Zero is available to pre-order now. Doing so will unlock the Treasure Basin accessory and Legacy outfit early, though Liang says both items can also be obtained through regular gameplay. !Game Informer News(https://gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/bodydefault/public/2026/08/12/04babff4/phantombladezero-pre-ordertrailer10-53screenshot.jpg.webp) Phantom Blade Zero launches on October 29 on PS5 and PC. For more on the game, check out our preview from last year(https://gameinformer.com/feature/2025/08/26/kung-fu-punk), when we traveled to China to see its motion-capture studio in person.

One Of This Year’s Biggest Games Is Coming To Switch 2 Next Year

Pearl Abyss has announced that Crimson Desert is planned to come out on Switch 2 in 2027. In fact, the developer behind the huge hit--which has sold over 4 million copies(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/crimson-desert-continues-to-reach-new-sales-heights/1100-6539176/) on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S--has a rough release window sometime between January and June. The open-world action game heading to Switch 2 had previously been discussed by Pearl Abyss, but the company's latest earnings letter(https://www.pearlabyss.com/en-US/Board/Detail?boardNo=15177) confirms Crimson Desert for the hybrid system. "In the case of Switch 2, the game has reached a playable baseline, and we are currently conducting technical reviews regarding performance optimization and quality standard compliance, targeting a release in the first half of next year," the financial briefing states. Switch 2 is the only system listed for platform expansion of Crimson Desert, with Pearl Abyss adding that no mobile version is currently planned. How the game translates to the hybrid system will be fascinating, since it offers such a ridiculous sandbox to play with(https://www.gamespot.com/gallery/crimson-desert-might-be-the-most-ridiculous-and-feature-packed-sandbox-yet/2900-7672/1). The developer is also "currently conducting extensive research from both technical and gameplay perspectives" regarding multiplayer for the game. However, the company is clear that introducing multiplayer is a "complex" endeavor. Crimson Desert made over $180 million(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/crimson-desert-has-already-made-180-million-and-its-developers-are-just-getting-started/1100-6539892/) for Pearl Abyss earlier this year, and it's been one of the best-selling games in the US for 2026(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/tomodachi-life-living-the-dream-beat-every-other-game-in-the-us-last-month/1100-6540051/). Mysterious Witcher Game Project Sirius Undergoes More Changes – Report🎮 Multi-platform

Mysterious Witcher Game Project Sirius Undergoes More Changes – Report

Project Sirius, the upcoming The Witcher project rumored to be a multiplayer game, is undergoing its latest chapter of upheaval. According to Kotaku(https://kotaku.com/witcher-multiplayer-project-suffers-another-round-of-layoffs-2000723777), nine people were laid off from Project Sirius developer The Molasses Flood, which is now part of CD Projekt Red. An additional nine people were shifted to other projects within the organization, the report said, adding that this was done as part of a "broader shift in development strategy." In 2023, CD Projekt Red confirmed that more than 25 people working on Project Sirius were laid off(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/witcher-game-project-sirius-now-has-a-new-framework-dev-hit-with-layoffs/1100-6514111/) as part of the developers implementing a "new framework"(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/new-witcher-game-project-sirius-is-undergoing-some-changes/1100-6512512/) for the game. "We are excited with the updated direction, but we are not ready to talk about details just yet," the developer said at the time. Project Sirius was announced in October 2022 under that codename, with CD Projekt billing it as an innovative take on The Witcher series aimed at veterans and newcomers alike. The Molasses Flood previously developed The Flame in the Flood, a survival game featuring original music from Chuck Ragan. Project Sirius is one of multiple upcoming games in the works at CD Projekt Red. Some of the others include Cyberpunk 2(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/cyberpunk-2077-sequel-release-date-trailer-story/1100-6526333/), The Witcher 4, 5, and 6(https://www.gamespot.com/gallery/the-witcher-4-release-date-trailer-news/2900-5228/), and a game made in partnership with Scopely(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/witcher-devs-new-game-with-saudi-arabias-scopely/).

New Ghost Of Yōtei Story Content And Roguelike Mode Arriving In October🎮 Multi-platform

New Ghost Of Yōtei Story Content And Roguelike Mode Arriving In October

!Game Informer News(https://gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/bodydefault/public/2026/08/12/3ed36ec1/ghsostechose.jpg.webp) Ghost of Yōtei released in 2025 and was one of our favorites of the year(https://gameinformer.com/best-of-2025/2025/12/16/the-top-ten-games-of-2025). You can read Game Informer's Ghost of Yōtei review(https://gameinformer.com/review/ghost-of-yotei/action-and-vengeance-unbounded) by following the link. Following its release, developer Sucker Punch added Legends, a cooperative online multiplayer mode, much like it did to Tsushima – Legends is free and available now if you own the base game. But now, the developer is also adding single-player story content and gathering everything into one package for Ghost of Yōtei Complete Edition. If you already own Ghost of Yōtei , you can upgrade to Complete Edition to get the new single-player content for $14.99 when it becomes available on October 1. The single-player content is made of two pieces: Echoes of Sekigahara and Most Wanted. Echoes of Sekigahara is a narrative expansion that takes place in the current Yōtei timeline but flashes back to detail Atsu's relationship with a character named Nagato and spends more time with The Snake, the least-explored member of the Yōtei Six. You basically kill him in the tutorial of the base game. Atsu's life after her childhood, but before the events of Ghost of Yōtei is ripe for exploration, so this is an exciting prospect narratively and mechanically. Most Wanted is Sucker Punch's "spin on a roguelike" according to a post on the PlayStation Blog(https://blog.playstation.com/2026/08/12/ghost-of-yotei-complete-edition-comes-to-ps5-october-1/) covering all the new content. In the mode, "you’ll accept bounties in order to start new runs, where taking down enemies will earn you perks, as well as unlock additional characters to play as." God of War Ragnarök similarly added a roguelike mode called Valhalla following its release and it was an excellent addition to the game(https://gameinformer.com/opinion/2023/12/13/god-of-war-ragnaroks-valhalla-is-so-much-more-than-just-a-roguelite-dlc). I'm hopeful Yōtei's Most Wanted mode will similarly be a worthy addition. Along with the content outlined above, the October 1 update will also add new tracks for Watanabe Mode, photo mode upgrades, additional New Game+ cosmetics, the option to "keep an armor set’s appearance while using a different set’s stats," and Beauty of Yōtei mode, which sounds like it will make the game showcase different environments from Ezo (where the game takes place) to function a bit like a screensaver.
