NHL 27 Brings Back A Fan-Favorite Mode Not Seen In Years, But It’s Not What It Seems

EA Sports has officially announced NHL 27, with 20-year-old Macklin Celebrini gracing the cover. The new entry in the pro ice hockey series includes all the stuff fans would expect, including better graphics, rebuilt team playbooks, and updated camera work, but there were also a few reveals fans might not have seen coming. One of the marquee new additions to NHL 27 is Connected Franchise, a feature fans have requested for years. It hasn't been in an NHL game since 2013's NHL 14. People were initially excited about the mode coming back, but the hype didn't last long for some, after key detail about the mode was uncovered. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vkz-p4wYegU The NHL 27 website(https://www.ea.com/games/nhl/nhl-27) confirms that Connected Franchise only supports human-controlled teams, and a screenshot from the announcement trailer states, "Teams without a human user cannot be controlled, traded with, or played against." Given that, players will need to have 32 real human people in a league. This is upsetting some fans, who are asking EA to add in AI teams. There was also some confusion about if Connected Franchise would be limited to a single season, but that is not the case. "Want to clear up one misconception: NHL 27 Connected Franchise is not limited to one season. Your league does not end after Year 1," NHL 27's franchise strategy and marketing manager said(https://x.com/TheClapperton/status/2077841479700193564). "You can continue the same league, and roster moves like trades and free agent claims will carry forward. But for this year, aspects like player aging, retirement, season stats, do not carry over. We know those features matter, and the upcoming blog and Feedback Portal will give the community a place to share what they want prioritized next as we continue to build on the mode. More to share soon!" NHL 27 also features a new broadcast commentary team with John Buccigross and Darren Pang. The game launches on September 11 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

Fallout 5 Is Really Happening, Along With Fallout 3 And Fallout: New Vegas Remasters

In a statement today(https://x.com/BethesdaStudios/status/2078117386935214101), Bethesda re-confirmed that Fallout 5 is in the works, along with officially confirming remasters of Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas. These projects are in the works alongside Obsidian's new Fallout game(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/new-fallout-game-is-new-focus-for-new-vegas-developer-obsidian-entertainment-report/?thumbnailid=1814235), so there are a lot of Fallout games coming. Bethesda has been talking about Fallout 5 for years already,(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/fallout-5-release-date-trailer-news/1100-6522412/) but Bethesda today also confirmed the game is now in pre-production. "Fallout is one of our biggest priorities today. Fallout 5 remains our long-range destination, and we have multiple Fallout projects in active development right now," the developer said. "We also know many players want to revisit previous Fallout experiences. While we're not announcing any dates today, we have been working on remasters for both Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas." !(https://www.gamespot.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/falloute50c0b.jpg?w=1024) A scene from Fallout 76. Fallout 5 is now in pre-production, Bethesda confirmed. But the company's current focus is The Elder Scrolls 6. "We know it’s been a very long wait for the sequel," the developer said. "The next chapter is on the way. We’re where we planned to be, loving how it looks, and playing it every day." Beyond Fallout 5 and the remasters, Bethesda confirmed the reports that New Vegas developer Obsidian is making a new Fallout game. "The wasteland continues to expand as we team up once again with our longtime friends at Obsidian Entertainment. We're happy to confirm they're working with us on a new Fallout project. We'll have more to share in the future," the developer said. Bethesda also provided updates on other Fallout projects, saying Fallout 4 has hit 35 million copies sold and that the mobile game Fallout Shelter reached 250 million players. The Fallout Shelter franchise is growing with a new reality TV show(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/fallout-shelter-reality-show-announced-for-prime-video/1100-6537431/). Fallout 76, meanwhile, is getting a "major" expansion in 2027 called Raven Rock, which is a prequel story to Fallout 3. "And while we won't host a traditional Fallout Day broadcast this year, we're already planning something special for Fallout's 30th anniversary in 2027, when Fallout Day will be celebrated live in Washington, D.C.," the developer said. .

Bethesda Confirms Fallout 5 In Preproduction, Obsidian’s Fallout Game, Fallout 3 And New Vegas Remasters, And Updates On Elder Scrolls VI And Starfield

!Game Informer News(https://www.gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/bodydefault/public/2025/10/23/43bbbc48/fallout-4-anniversary-edition-art.jpg.webp) Bethesda Game Studios has penned a lengthy studio letter(https://bethesda.net/en/article/7wrffyXajE4BmCLJVpOkcN/a-note-from-bethesda-game-studios) on the developer’s project pipeline for the next several years. Among the updates are confirmation of multiple Fallout projects, including Fallout 5, and notes about The Elder Scrolls VI and Starfield. Bethesda details the future of Fallout, confirming that Fallout 5 is currently in preproduction, saying it “remains our long-range destination.” This echoes a similar statement he made in 2022(https://gameinformer.com/2022/06/14/todd-howard-confirms-fallout-5-coming-after-elder-scrolls-6-shares-additional-starfield), when he said Fallout 5 would arrive after The Elder Scrolls VI, which will likely still be the case. The game is being developed using Creation Engine 3, Bethesda’s next-generation game engine that will also power The Elder Scrolls VI. Additionally, multiple other Fallout projects are in the works. Bethesda confirms it is developing remasters of Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas, the former of which was leaked in court documents back in 2023(https://gameinformer.com/news/2023/09/19/leaked-microsoft-doc-indicates-xbox-is-working-on-oblivion-remaster-fallout-3). There are no release windows for these remasters, however. Fallout 76 will receive its next major expansion in 2027 called Raven Rock, a prequel story to Fallout 3. Fallout Shelter will receive new seasons while Bethesda teases the unscripted TV adaptation of the mobile game that's currently in development at Amazon. Bethesda also confirms there will be no Fallout Day broadcast this year because it is planning to celebrate the franchise’s 30th anniversary in 2027 with a live celebration in Washington, D.C. In the last Fallout-related update, Bethesda confirmed it is working with Obsidian Entertainment on a new Fallout game, corroborating an earlier report(https://gameinformer.com/2026/07/09/report-obsidian-cancels-avowed-sequel-to-begin-work-on-a-new-fallout-game) that Obsidian had been mandated to pivot to this project, canceling an Avowed sequel in the process. Bethesda’s next big project is The Elder Scrolls VI, a project it describes as “our primary development focus today, with the majority of our team currently working on the next chapter of the franchise.” “The next chapter is on the way. We’re where we planned to be, loving how it looks, and playing it every day,” Bethesda writes. Bethesda is also promoting closer collaborations between its teams. ZeniMax Online Studios, the team behind The Elder Scrolls Online, will also “partner closely” with Bethesda on the Elder Scrolls franchise in addition to making new updates for ESO. “By aligning more directly across the franchise, we can create even better experiences for players,” writes Bethesda. As for Bethesda’s newest IP, Starfield, the team is not done with that universe. He states that Year 3 of the game will bring new stories, further gameplay improvements, and more as Bethesda prepares to launch new Starborn content in 2027. Bethesda’s updates come in the wake of an ongoing massive restructuring of Xbox’s game division(https://gameinformer.com/2026/07/06/xbox-parts-ways-with-five-studios-over-3000-layoffs-announced) initiated by CEO Asha Sharma as a “reset” of the brand, which saw 1,600 employees laid off across its entire game division, with 1,600 more cuts to come over the next several months. Xbox also divested itself of five of its development studios, with Bethesda's parent company, ZeniMax, losing its subsidiary, Arkane Studios. ZeniMax as a whole has reportedly been hit hard by the layoffs, with Bethesda Game Studios(https://www.pcgamer.com/gaming-industry/bethesda-game-studios-and-zenimax-hit-hard-by-xbox-layoffs-says-union/), id Software(https://gameinformer.com/2026/07/07/doom-developer-id-software-reportedly-loses-roughly-half-its-staff-to-layoffs), and ZeniMax Online losing hundreds of staff members amid the restructuring.

Amazon's God Of War TV Series Will Reportedly Recast Kratos Actor After Ryan Hurst Suffers Serious Injury On Set

!Game Informer News(https://www.gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/bodydefault/public/2026/02/27/6e2d8295/gowliveactionsetphoto.jpg.webp) We got our first look at Ryan Hurst and Callum Vinson as Kratos and Atreus(https://www.gameinformer.com/2026/02/27/amazon-reveals-first-look-at-primes-live-action-god-of-war-series) in Amazon Prime's God of War(https://www.gameinformer.com/product/god-of-war) TV series adaptation back in February, and though the response to it was mixed at best, the studio's track record with other video game properties, like Fallout, kept us optimistic. The show has been significantly set back, however, due to a serious injury Hurst sustained on set, which led Amazon, reportedly, to recast the role of Kratos. Deadline(https://deadline.com/2026/07/god-of-war-recast-kratos-role-ryan-hurst-injured-on-set-1236984409/)reports that Hurst, who gained 40 pounds of muscle in anticipation of this role, tore a bicep while performing a stunt on set in late June. He has since undergone surgery and is in recovery, and the TV set's production has been paused and remains on hiatus today. With Hurst likely needing four to six months to recover from this injury and unable to continue the strength training needed to keep up with the stature of his Kratos, Amazon has opted to recast the role rather than wait until probably 2027 to continue shooting with Hurst. Before this injury, Deadline's sources report that Amazon and the crew had already shot four entire episodes. The publication reports that following this recasting of the titular God of War, preparations are expected to begin in August, with production and shooting set to resume in October. God of War has already received a two-season order, with both seasons expected to be shot back-to-back; that remains the plan, according to Deadline. In case you missed it, here's the rest of the announced cast: - Callum Vinson - Atreus(https://gameinformer.com/2026/02/09/atreus-has-been-cast-in-amazons-live-action-god-of-war-series) - Ed Skrein - Baldur(https://gameinformer.com/2026/02/24/deadpool-villain-actor-ed-skrein-cast-as-baldur-in-amazons-god-of-war-tv-adaptation) - Max Parker - Heimdall - Ólafur Darri Ólafsson - Thor - Mandy Patinkin - Odin - Alastair Duncan - Mimir - Danny Woodburn - Brok - Jeff Gulka - Sindri In the meantime, read Game Informer's reviews for the 2018 God of War(https://www.gameinformer.com/review/god-of-war/god-of-war-review-reaching-a-higher-summit) and its sequel, Ragnarök(https://www.gameinformer.com/review/god-of-war-ragnarok/next-to-godliness). Check out the extensive reveal trailer for the next game, God of War Laufey,(https://www.gameinformer.com/state-of-play/2026/06/02/god-of-war-laufey-stars-kratos-wife-fighting-through-the-afterlife-of-the) after that. Netflix Says Part Of Its Games Business Is Up 600%, But It’s Still Early Days🎮 Multi-platform

Netflix Says Part Of Its Games Business Is Up 600%, But It’s Still Early Days

As part of Netflix's latest earnings report(https://s22.q4cdn.com/959853165/files/docfinancials/2026/q2/FINAL-Q2-26-Shareholder-Letter.pdf), the streamer gave an update on its growing video game efforts, which include cloud-based TV games and mobile games. In short, the business is growing and showing positive signs, but it's still early days. June 2026 saw the release of Netflix's two "most successful" launches ever for cloud games on TV with FIFA World Cup: Launch Edition(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/fifa-world-cup-game-coming-to-netflix-with-updates-based-on-how-the-tournament-goes/) and the horror game Unhinged(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/you-can-play-oxenfrees-devs-new-game-unhinged-in-30-minutes-and-it-rules/), though Netflix did not share any specific datapoints about them. The Netflix Playground app, designed for kids, saw 3x growth in daily players since it debuted in April this year. This new app has helped "engagement" for kids' mobile games from Netflix to surge 600% year-over-year, Netflix said. "While off a small base, these early signals give us increasing confidence that we are building a foundation with exciting future growth potential," Netflix said. !(https://www.gamespot.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/netflixgames.png?w=936) The Netflix Games business is growing. During an earnings call(https://s22.q4cdn.com/959853165/files/docfinancials/2026/q2/Netflix-Inc-Earnings-Call2026-07-16T000000English-1.pdf), Netflix co-CEO Gregory Peters said Netflix continues to be in the building stage for its video game efforts. “We’ve been building some solid foundations, and now we’re seeing exciting positive signals that help inform and give us increased conviction in our future growth and the nature of that growth here,” he said. Peters went on to say that another “big positive sign” for Netflix Games has been its cloud-based TV games, which began to scale in earnest in October 2025. Since that time, “monthly active players for cloud games have increased 11x, and adoption is significantly ahead of that curve that we had for mobile games with even higher retention value,” he said. “So we’re definitely excited about that and focused on scaling up cloud games.” Peters said the gaming market is massive, and Netflix is taking it slow as it defines a strategy and determines its investment levels. "We're just getting started here. We're scratching the surface in terms of what we think the total potential of the space offers for us," he said. "You're going to see us continue to calibrate and refine our level of investment here, which is still very small relative to our overall content spend based on demonstrated performance based on what is working for our members and what's delivering returns to our business." The next big Netflix game, Netflix Minigolf, launches on July 28, bringing together franchises like Squid Game, Bridgerton, and Stranger Things(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/new-netflix-game-brings-together-the-streamers-most-popular-shows/). Netflix Games has endured a rocky road in recent years as it set out to establish a strategy. At one point, Netflix invested in AAA games, and hired big names(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/netflix-shutters-aaa-game-studio-led-by-overwatch-and-halo-vets/1100-6527313/), but those plans fell apart. Today, Netflix is more focused on social and party games that people can play quickly and easily. Netflix Games' narrative executive Sean Krankel told The Game Business(https://www.thegamebusiness.com/p/interview-netflix-wants-to-become) that, in the next couple of years, he wants people to see Netflix as "natural" destination to play games, as opposed to it being perceived like it is today, as "experimental." "I would love, in a year or two, for people to be going: ‘This is naturally the place that I would go to play a story’. And that ‘playing a story’ doesn’t sound weird," he said. "The ambitious thing here is that we create a new way of interacting with story and character that doesn’t feel like you have to be trepidatious or worried about trying it, or, ‘Am I going to be good at this?’" "The same way that somebody’ll go to Disneyland and jump on a ride or go into an escape room, and it just becomes a new form of entertainment. That’s where I’d love to see this go," he added.
