Why Kyoto Was The Perfect Setting For Onimusha: Way Of The Sword🎮 Multi-platform

Why Kyoto Was The Perfect Setting For Onimusha: Way Of The Sword

!Game Informer News(https://www.gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/bodydefault/public/2026/07/15/ef040dec/380onimusha22.jpg.webp) Onimusha: Way of the Sword(https://gameinformer.com/Onimusha) marks the return of Capcom’s samurai action series after a 20-year hiatus. While previous entries were set during Japan’s Sengoku period – the Warring States period – Way of the Sword brings players to the Edo period. Though Edo, known in the modern day as Tokyo, was the country's capital then, protagonist Miyamoto Musashi’s adventures in Way of the Sword will largely take place in Kyoto. For Game Informer’s Onimusha: Way of the Sword cover story(https://gameinformer.com/cover-reveal/2026/07/16/cover-reveal-onimusha-way-of-the-sword), I spoke to various leads working on the game to learn more information about this long-awaited return. While Kyoto is a great city and the setting of various games, it’s also a historic location that makes sense for Capcom's goals in Way of the Sword. !Game Informer News(https://www.gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/bodydefault/public/2026/07/15/02c3ec7f/380onimusha24.jpg.webp) The Sengoku period began in the 1400s and ended in 1600, and that’s where the first four Onimusha games took place (and also modern-day Paris in Onimusha 3: Demon Siege – it’s a whole thing). Way of the Sword takes place in the early Edo period, which began at the turn of the 17th Century. Director Satoru Nihei tells me that Musashi is in his 20s in Way of the Sword, which means the game likely takes place between 1603 and 1613. And while he’ll visit other locations, like the Oni Realm, the game largely takes place in Kyoto. “Whilst investigating and researching Kyoto, we started finding all these strange dark stories and myths tied to Kyoto, and felt it was a really good match for Onimusha in terms of having the Genma involved in some of these dark elements of Kyoto’s history,” Nihei says. “That became a point for selecting Kyoto as a location.” While the real-life Musashi did visit Kyoto, Capcom has taken some creative liberties with why and when in Onimusha, for obvious reasons. Musashi didn’t go to Kyoto looking to fight Genma – he went there looking to put another notch in his successful sword duels belt. When he arrives there in-game, he’ll be quite young compared to his Kyoto-based stories of legend, Nihei says. He didn’t factor into local politics in the real world, and Nihei says don’t expect him to do as much in Way of the Sword. “In terms of politics and the surrounding historical context, Musashi doesn’t really factor into that too much, and just because we wanted to release this game to a global audience, we didn’t want to delve too deep into Japanese history and politics, which may not be as accessible for people outside of Japan.” !Kiyomizu-dera Temple, as depicted in Onimusha: Way of the Sword(https://www.gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/bodydefault/public/2026/07/15/ee55b8b4/380onimushakiyomizu02.jpg.webp "Kiyomizu-dera Temple, as depicted in Onimusha: Way of the Sword") Kiyomizu-dera Temple, as depicted in Onimusha: Way of the Sword Way of the Sword lead writer Hiroshi Yamashita says he and his team looked at the legends and myths of Kyoto, developing many of the characters from that starting point, taking bits and pieces from here and there to flesh out more mysterious figures into something more resembling characters. “But in terms of actually writing the characters themselves, a lot of that comes from me, and then I take that to the director and the rest of the team,” he tells me. As you might guess, the team at Capcom visited Kyoto many times – it’s just a short 40-ish minute train ride away, after all – to research the area, experience its atmosphere and history, and take in sights and sounds it might want to include in Way of the Sword. Art director Hiroyuki Nara tells me Way of the Sword’s Kyoto is meant to align with the idea of an “eerily beautiful dark fantasy.” “The general depiction or impression of Kyoto, for a lot of people, is a vivid kind of green, beautiful place, and I would have loved to recreate that sense in the game,” he says. “But just because of the setting and the time that it is, it’s obviously got a much darker edge than real-life Kyoto, so it’s something I had to hold back on.” That said, a lot of real-life Kyoto is in Way of the Sword, including pagodas, shrines, and locations you can still visit today. I even went to the Yasui Konpiragu Shrine with some of the development team to learn more about it, and the Kiyomizu-dera Temple as well. You can see both locations in the gallery below: Onimusha: Way of the Sword is the latest game to grace the cover of Game Informer, and as part of my cover story coverage, I’ll be posting exclusive behind-the-scenes articles diving deep into the making of this game, the team’s thought processes, and more. Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto Defends Remakes Ahead Of Ocarina Of Time Switch 2 Remake🍄 Nintendo Switch, Multi-platform

Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto Defends Remakes Ahead Of Ocarina Of Time Switch 2 Remake

Gaming legend Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator of Mario and The Legend of Zelda, has spoken up to defend remakes. A lot of people embrace and enjoy remakes, while others say developers should instead spend more time and resources on entirely new games. Miyamoto, for his part, said remakes are good, actually, because a lot of people might have missed out on a game when it was originally released. Beyond that, commercial success of a remake can lead to additional resources that a company can use to put into new projects, Miyamoto said. “Some people might say there are a lot of remakes, but after five years, a lot of people have outgrown games and stop playing them. Young people today don’t have the opportunity to play games from 10 years ago, so remaking them to be more playable and releasing them again is a good way to meet the demand," he told Famitsu(https://www.famitsu.com/article/202607/82056), as translated by Nintendo Everything(https://nintendoeverything.com/miyamoto-defends-the-idea-that-there-are-too-many-remakes-explains-why-nintendo-releases-them/). "Letting people know the original games also leads to future developments, so we’ve been actively pursuing that recently.” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ze-346WTsI0 Nintendo has released numerous remakes over the years, so it's not surprising to hear Miyamoto say what he said. The next big remake from Nintendo is The Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time remake(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/nintendo-finally-reveals-the-legend-of-zelda-ocarina-of-time-remake-for-2026/), which comes to Switch 2 this year. Remakes are popular across the entire gaming industry. The next big remake is Halo: Campaign Evolved, a remake of the 2001 game (minus competitive multiplayer), and it launches in early access on July 23(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/halo-campaign-evolved-release-date-and-global-launch-times-revealed/). A study from 2025 found that nearly all gamers played a remake or remaster the previous year(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/report-finds-nearly-all-gamers-have-played-a-remaster-or-remake-in-last-year/1100-6534807/). Another report found that, in 2025, remakes and remasters reached more than 138 million downloads(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/nostalgia-wins-remakes-and-remasters-reached-138-million-downloads-in-2025/1100-6538440/).

If You Aren’t Going To BlizzCon 2026, You Can Still Spend Money Like You Are

BlizzCon 2026 is shaping up to be a major moment for the house World of Warcraft(https://www.gamespot.com/games/world-of-warcraft/) built, but even if you won't be in attendance, Blizzard will still let you buy all kinds of cosmetics to celebrate the occasion. Though BlizzCon this year isn't until September 12, players can buy digital BlizzCon bundles for all of Blizzard's major live-service games right now. Those lucky enough to have a BlizzCon ticket(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/blizzcon-2026-tickets-go-on-sale-soon-heres-how-much-theyll-cost/1100-6535959/) will get every bundle for free. Each bundle individually costs $25 or $30, but snagging the BlizzCon Ultimate Collection bundle, which includes every individual bundle plus a few extras for each game, is $50. If you sink a significant amount of time into more than one Blizzard game and are keen on buying at least two bundles, the Ultimate Collection definitely seems like the way to go. BlizzCon itself will be free to watch from home, and Blizzard is offering a 15-day co-op boost for StarCraft 2 and a new Heroes of the Storm Thrall skin as freebies to all players. The bundles will be available until September 28. Below is a full breakdown of what is included in each available bundle: - World of Warcraft BlizzCon Bundle ($30 USD): Rabbit’ath Flying Mount, Garb of the Dawnfire Phoenix Transmog Ensemble, and the Perch of the Dawnfire Phoenix Decor. !(https://www.gamespot.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/BlizzCon-26-WoW-Bundle.jpg?w=1024) - Overwatch BlizzCon Bundle ($30 USD): Lich Queen Mei Legendary Skin, Frostmourne Ana Weapon Skin, Lichimari King Weapon Charm, and Lich Queen Mei Spray. !(https://www.gamespot.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/BlizzCon-26-Overwatch-Bundle.jpg?w=1024) - Diablo IV BlizzCon Bundle ($30 USD): Streamsnout Pet, Indigo Cat Mount, and Escapeproof Armor Mount Armor. !(https://www.gamespot.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/BlizzCon-26-Diablo-4-Bundle.jpg?w=1024) - Diablo Immortal BlizzCon Bundle ($25 USD). Everything from the five individual digital bundles, plus a World of Warcraft Murk’atath Pet, an Overwatch Lich Queen Mei Player Icon and Name Card, Diablo IV Indigo’s Light Trophy and Indigo’s Master Trophy, a Diablo Immortal Astral Celebration Portrait Frame, and five additional Hearthstone Standard Packs. Blizzard president Johanna Faries has said 2026 will be Blizzard's "biggest year yet,"(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/blizzards-biggest-year-yet-coming-in-2026-for-35th-anniversary-president-says/1100-6537061/) with BlizzCon having a major role to play. "I have total confidence that the teams are going to come very, very big, both with the heart and soul of what I think our core-most fans long for in a BlizzCon, but also bringing some very new things to the table," Faries said. What announcements are in store remains to be seen, but players can expect major news about the future of World of Warcraft, Diablo 4, and Overwatch. Persistent rumors have also pointed towards the reveal of a StarCraft shooter(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/starcraft-shooter-likely-to-be-revealed-at-blizzcon-report-suggests/1100-6537249/). If an alleged leak(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/a-once-dismissed-warcraft-leak-may-have-just-revealed-blizzards-huge-plans-for-the-franchise/) is to be believed, Blizzard could also surprise fans with new games and shows set in the Warcraft universe.

Here’s How To Play Halo: Campaign Evolved With Your Friends Across Xbox, PlayStation, And PC🎮 PlayStation, Xbox, Multi-platform

Here’s How To Play Halo: Campaign Evolved With Your Friends Across Xbox, PlayStation, And PC

With Halo: Campaign Evolved's early access period set to kick off on July 23(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/how-to-get-halo-campaign-evolved-early-access/), you may be wondering just how to enable cross-platform play so you and your fellow Spartans can kick grunt butt across PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Well, the process is actually super simple, so let us break it down for you right here. As outlined in a July 22 blog on the Halo Waypoint site(https://www.halowaypoint.com/news/early-access-primer), playing this Halo remake with your friends is easy. All you have to do is know their Gamertag or Username, search for and add it to your Xbox friends list--either on the Xbox site, from the Xbox Game Bar, or in the Xbox mobile app--then add them to your party from the "Cross-Platform Friends" list of the "Play Co-op" menu when they're online. And just like that, you're playing Halo: Campaign Evolved(Campaign Evolved) with your friends on a platform other than an Xbox. Weird times we're living in, but it really is that simple. It's worth noting that you don't get immediate access to Halo: Campaign Evolved's early access just by buying the game. As is customary with these sorts of things, you’ll need to preorder the $70 Premium Edition to get into the early access pool. If you have preordered the $50 Standard Edition, you can upgrade to the Premium Edition to gain early access, but that will run your wallet $20, bringing the total to the Premium Edition price. And if you got it via Xbox Game Pass(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/is-halo-campaign-evolved-on-game-pass/), you can upgrade to the Premium Edition for $20. Preordering either version nets you the Foundry Armory Pack, which comes with legendary looks for Master Chief's iconic Mark V Mjolnir armor. Opting for the Premium Edition comes with some extra goodies, though, such as a digital artbook and short story, as well as the game manual and five additional Master Chief armor skins and six weapon skins. Halo: Campaign Evolved will launch on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S on July 28--and it's a day-one release on Xbox Game Pass(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/is-halo-campaign-evolved-on-game-pass/). Be sure to check out the release times(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/halo-campaign-evolved-release-date-and-global-launch-times-revealed/) so you can be ready for when the game officially comes out.
