Marvel’s Wolverine Actor Reveals The Performance That Terrified Him

Like several other first-party Sony games, Marvel's Wolverine(https://www.gamespot.com/games/marvels-wolverine/) relied on motion-capture work to draw an authentic performance from its cast. Spartacus actor Liam McIntyre plays the iconic mutant in Insomniac's new game, and in a recent interview, he explained how the role required him to dig deep to find the feral side of Wolverine that erupts from him whenever he enters a berserker state. While McIntyre originally wanted to reference rabid dogs for inspiration--content "which is, first of all, very hard to find, probably for the best," he said to EW(https://ew.com/marvels-wolverine-liam-mcintyre-scared-to-go-all-out-exclusive-12024170)--his take on the character seeing red did terrify the team at Insomniac Games. "I guess that's good, right? Being terrifying," McIntyre said. "But, suddenly, I was like, 'I'm really scared to go all out with this,' but they're such a good team that you feel safe. They will help me if it's not gonna work. They will tell me. They won't just let it happen. So I got to take some really huge swings with my character as a result of being able to trust them so much." Marvel's Wolverine animation director Brian Wyser and narrative director Walt Williams added that McIntyre delivered not only the "raw" performance that the studio was looking for, but he also embodied the humanity of the character, who has spent decades being hurt by other people, inflicting that pain back on them, and has tried to bottle up his emotions. "You don't have that level of rage or pain if you don't have a genuinely deep yearning, caring heart inside of you," Williams said. Out on September 15 for PS5, Marvel's Wolverine follows the mutant as he rejoins Team X to stop Sentinel creator Bolivar Trask from kidnapping mutants all across the globe. With the X-Men not yet formed(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/the-x-men-dont-exist-in-insomniacs-wolverine-but-another-important-team-does/), it's up to Wolverine to lead the charge by slicing and dicing his way(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/wolverine-dev-changed-things-to-avoid-logan-appearing-to-be-a-sadist/) through enemies like the ninja death-cult The Hand and the cybernetic mercenaries known as the Reavers. Country Turns To Gaming Legend To Counterplay Online Gambling Epidemic🎮 Multi-platform

Country Turns To Gaming Legend To Counterplay Online Gambling Epidemic

Online gambling has been in the news a fair bit recently, with the ease of getting into online sportsbook betting becoming a hotly contested issue in the United States(https://news.harvard.edu/gazette/story/2026/01/sports-betting-worries-grow-as-wagers-skyrocket/) and popular prediction markets being subjected to increased controversy and government scrutiny(https://www.curtis.senate.gov/press-releases/curtis-schiff-introduce-bipartisan-legislation-to-ban-sports-prediction-market-contracts/). It's hardly limited to the United States, however, as illicit online gambling has wide appeal across much of Asia, despite local laws forbidding much of it. South Korea in particular has seen an uptick in online gambling, particularly among youth, many of whom have gone to extreme lengths to obtain money to spend on gambling or cover their debts(https://globalnation.inquirer.net/332095/teen-gamblers-turn-to-loan-sharks-classmates-and-parents-bank-accounts). To help combat the growing problem, the government has teamed up with one of the most famous figures in global esports, League of Legends prodigy Lee Sang-hyeok, better known by the handle "Faker." As reported by the Seoul Economic Daily(https://en.sedaily.com/society/2026/07/22/faker-named-honorary-police-officer-to-warn-youth-on-cyber), Faker has been made an honorary police officer with the title of Senior Officer. The rationale behind this appointment is that "Lee is an esports player with high recognition at home and abroad and has consistently practiced the values of self-management and restraint throughout his long career, serving as a role model for young people." In this role, Lee will be producing public service announcements, such as videos and posters, to help promote South Korea's Youth Cyber Gambling Voluntary Reporting System, which aims to help youngsters with online gambling problems. As an added incentive to free themselves of gambling addiction, those who join the program may receive Faker's autographed uniform, which the article notes "will be delivered to young people who have overcome gambling addiction by faithfully participating in treatment programs, serving as encouragement for their healthy return to daily life." This honor is hardly the first for Lee, who was the first Korean eSports athlete to receive the Cheongnyong Medal(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OrderofSportMerit), a top honor for the country's athletes. He's also due to appear on South Korean postage(https://www.koreajoongangdaily.com/business/commemorative-postage-stamp-honoring-esports-legend-faker-to-be-released-in-october/12605989) and has recently debuted on a local Disney+ television program(https://www.koreaherald.com/article/10809459). Suffice to say, Lee is a broadly known public figure whose high profile might bring attention to the issue. This all contrasts against the actions of League of Legends publisher Riot Games, who opened up sports-betting sponsorships for LoL teams a little over a year ago(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/riot-will-allow-sports-betting-sponsorships-for-league-of-legends-esports-teams/1100-6532793/). Whether or not the South Korean government will actually take them to task for that is up in the air.

Insomniac Interview Reveals Marvel's Wolverine Takes Place When 'The X-Men Don't Yet Exist'

!Game Informer News(https://www.gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/bodydefault/public/2026/07/22/13c7b7ee/marvels-wolverine-video-game-072126-1-3d6699eab9914029bd8f201c37e9899f.jpg.webp) Marvel's Wolverine(https://www.gameinformer.com/product/marvels-wolverine), Spider-Man developer Insomniac's upcoming action game, launches in less than two months(https://www.gameinformer.com/2026/02/24/marvels-wolverine-officially-gets-september-release-date), but we still know very little about its world and story. Sony's recent summer showcase gave us our first real look at its gameplay(https://www.gameinformer.com/state-of-play/2026/06/02/new-wolverine-gameplay-offers-first-look-at-jean-grey) and featured a slice of the narrative, but we're still eager for more information about the violent journey Logan will be taking on. Luckily, Entertainment Weekly published an interview today(https://ew.com/marvels-wolverine-liam-mcintyre-scared-to-go-all-out-exclusive-12024170?taid=6a60f946d8ae2a0001d59bc4&utmcampaign=trueAnthem:+New+Content+(Feed)&utmmedium=trueAnthem&utmsource=twitter) with several of the game's developers, and it sheds some light on the state of mutants and the X-Men in the video game world. More specifically, it reveals that the X-Men don't exist yet. "Marvel’s Wolverine, which will release on PlayStation 5 consoles this Sep. 15, is set in a world where the X-Men don’t yet exist," the article reads. "While humanity knows about superheroes like Spider-Man (hence, the events of the previous games), mutants are still largely living in the shadows. "Those that do know of them, either fear them or see them as subjects for extermination. Wolverine works for Team X, a black-ops group (inspired by the team from the comics) fighting for mutant survival." !Game Informer News(https://www.gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/bodydefault/public/2026/07/22/c3ed90ba/marvels-wolverine-video-game-072126-55eea058a29f4720b7e91dcfe26fb921.jpg.webp)(https://gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/nocompression/public/2026/07/22/c3ed90ba/marvels-wolverine-video-game-072126-55eea058a29f4720b7e91dcfe26fb921.jpg.webp) Based on what we've seen in the trailers, this makes sense – Wolverine is generally acting alone, and while he's familiar with other mutants, we've yet to see anyone with a matching yellow suit. Even Jean Grey, who appears in the Summer State of Play footage, wears blue and black, and her relationship with Logan is pretty vague. Still, it's a bit disappointing for folks who have wanted to see a narrative-driven game featuring the X-Men team, but hopefully this paves the road for Xavier's Academy in the future. As for Team X, the team Wolverine is a part of in the game, it's not clear exactly who's on the roster. Sabretooth, Omega Red, Lady Deathstrike(https://www.gameinformer.com/2026/07/16/lady-deathstrike-faces-logan-in-new-marvels-wolverine-cinematic-trailer), and Mystique have all been members in various adaptations of the group, and they're all confirmed to be in the game, but Wolverine also seems to be battling each of them at some point or another, so either he has a falling out with his teammates (very likely), or they're enemies of Team X (also likely). Aside from that detail, the interview largely focuses on Insomniac's take on Wolverine as a character, as well as actor Liam McIntyre's performance. McIntyre tells EW that he watched footage of rabid dogs to get in touch with Wolverine's feral side, a level of commitment his collaborators called "terrifying." “I guess that’s good, right? Being terrifying,” McIntyre told EW. “But, suddenly, I was like, ‘I’m really scared to go all out with this,’ but they’re such a good team that you feel safe. They will help me if it’s not gonna work. They will tell me. They won’t just let it happen. So I got to take some really huge swings with my character as a result of being able to trust them so much.” Later in the piece, animation director Brian Wyser says that trust makes the final product "look good." Marvel's Wolverine launches on September 15 as a PS5 exclusive. EA Sports UFC 6 Leads Game Sales For June, A Month Where Spending Fell 21% Compared To Last Year

!UFC 6(https://www.gameinformer.com/sites/default/files/styles/bodydefault/public/2026/06/26/8e1ffeb5/assets2026051778621559ufc6revtopuriavgaethjecleanweb16x9.jpg.webp) U.S. video game spending in June of this year dropped a substantial 21% compared to June of 2025. While that kind of decline might sound dismal, especially placed within the context of current economic struggles and abundant price increases everywhere, it's also due to just how good June 2025 was for video game spending, bolstered by the record-breaking launch of the Nintendo Switch 2(https://www.gameinformer.com/product/nintendo-switch-2), as reported by the latest Circana analyst report. EA Sports UFC 6(https://www.gameinformer.com/product/ea-sports-ufc-6) took the top spot for best-selling game of 2026 for U.S. spending on physical and full game digital dollar sales, with Meccha Chameleon behind it in second, followed by 007 First Light(https://www.gameinformer.com/product/007-first-light) and Star Fox(https://www.gameinformer.com/product/star-fox-2026), the recently released Nintendo Switch 2 remake of Star Fox 64. The top 10 is as follows: 1. EA Sports UFC 6 2. Meccha Chameleon 3. 007 First Light 4. Star Fox 5. Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight 6. Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream 7. Forza Horizon 6 8. MLB: The Show 26 9. Minecraft 10. NBA 2K26 U.S. video game spending reached $4.5 billion during June (in totality), and first-half spending for the year finished 1% behind 2025's pace, at $27.5 billion. For June 2026 itself, video game hardware spending dropped 62% compared to June 2025, down to $383 million, driven by the aforementioned Switch 2 launch. Switch 2 hardware spending in the U.S. actually dropped 79% compared to its launch month last year, though that's likely to be expected given a console launch is a massive month, if not the biggest, for sales. That said, the Switch 2 remained the best-selling hardware across both units sold and dollars for June 2026 and 2026 year-to-date, with PlayStation 5 ranking second across the same measures. PlayStation 5 spending fell 19% year-on-year, and Xbox Series spending fell more than double that, according to Circana's report. Looking more broadly at U.S video game spending, content (games, etc.) spending fell by 12% last month, compared to June 2025, down to $3.9 billion. Year-to-date content dollars remain flat compared to 2025, though, sitting at $24.3 billion. Surprisingly, subscription service spending was the only content segment in video game spending that experienced growth last month, jumping up 7% compared to June 2025; even mobile spending is down, which is rare. Finally, June accessories spending fell 21% from last year, to $232 million, and controller spending, specifically, dropped 31%. For more, read Game Informer's reviews of EA Sports UFC 6(https://gameinformer.com/review/ea-sports-ufc-6/complacency-at-the-top), 007 First Light(https://www.gameinformer.com/review/007-first-light/cinematic-flair), Star Fox(https://www.gameinformer.com/review/star-fox-2026/mission-complete), and Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight(https://www.gameinformer.com/review/lego-batman-legacy-of-the-dark-knight/batman-built-different).
