John Romero commiserates with ousted id devs as around half the studio reported axed, says he hopes someone is preserving its work like he did before he left

Overview & Key Takeaways

"I know what it feels like to leave id while id goes on."

New CEO Asha Sharma hit the reset button on Xbox yesterday, taking out 1,600 jobs at once with another 1,600 cuts still to come before the end of the year. Very few studios escaped the scythe: even id Software's legendary name did not save it, and it quickly became clear the studio had been swept up in the bloodletting.

Now, anonymous sources tell Game Developer that the losses at id amount to around half the studio, and that the QA department in particular has been heavily affected. Meanwhile, id co-founder John Romero has taken to social media to express his grief at the cuts.

"I'm so sorry for everyone at id Software affected by these layoffs," wrote Romero. "I know what it feels like to leave id while id goes on. It's a strange and painful thing to step away from a place that holds so much of your work, friendships and history." Romero, famously, was forced to resign from id in the mid-'90s after clashing with fellow co-founder John Carmack (they're on better terms now).

Romero, for his part, is pretty chuffed with how id's current devs have continued the studio's legacy. "Doom, Quake, and Wolfenstein are not easy names to carry on, especially in today's industry," he wrote. "The last few games showed real care, skill and respect for what those worlds mean to people."

Touching on an issue with particular salience in the wake of Sony's announcement that it will be ditching physical PlayStation discs in 2028, Romero professed hope that someone is doing the work to preserve "the company's ongoing legacy (the work, code, assets, stories and the people behind them).

"id's history is critically important to the history of games. I've preserved id's complete early history from our start at Softdisk through to August 6, 1996, including materials and assets that, as far as I know, id itself no longer has." In a follow-up post, Romero added that "For those asking, it's in my will to donate everything to the Strong Museum of Play, including all digital assets."

Regardless, Romero's heart goes out to the studio's current and (now) former devs: "I'm thinking of everyone at id today, and everyone else affected by yesterday's layoffs. Romero Games was there a year ago. I know how devastating it is, and my heart's with all of you."

Ignore Your Growing Backlog–It’s Time To Play South Of Midnight On Steam

Look, it's no surprise to anyone for me to admit that I like South of Midnight(https://www.gamespot.com/games/south-of-midnight/). I've written about it being a love letter to the American Deep South(https://www.gamespot.com/reviews/south-of-midnight-review-a-love-letter-to-the-american-deep-south/1900-6418352/), noted how it was one of the best Xbox games of 2025(https://www.gamespot.com/gallery/the-best-xbox-exclusive-games-of-2025/2900-7325/2), and talked about how much the game's story, characters, and setting have meant to me on video podcasts for both GameSpot(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=815z1trpMdQ) and IGN(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZnkSABRc3EI). I want everyone to play this game, and there's never been a better time to do so on Steam(https://store.steampowered.com/app/1934570/SouthofMidnight/). As noticed by Respec(https://www.respec.net/news/151-south-of-midnight-self-published-steam-compulsion-games-xbox), Xbox is no longer listed as the publisher for South of Midnight on Steam. Instead, the game is noted as being self-published by Compulsion Games, reflecting the studio's independence following another round of severe layoffs and restructuring from Xbox(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/xbox-layoffs-studio-closures-and-spin-offs-everything-announced-today/). While Compulsion Games hasn't confirmed whether this is the case--who knows what type of strange and awful backroom clauses might be in place to ensure Xbox keeps getting a slice of this particular pie--this does seem to indicate that all future sales of South of Midnight on Steam will benefit Compulsion, not Compulsion and Xbox. So if you want to play South of Midnight, but you were concerned about continuing to line Xbox's pockets, this seems like the golden opportunity to finally give the action-adventure platformer a go. And you should play it! The game is so good! South of Midnight's selling point is certainly its atmosphere. The sound design and orchestral score(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/south-of-midnights-music-transforms-trauma-into-a-soundtrack/1100-6537016/) are tied into the gameplay and story to put you right into the midst of its gothic fantasy, transforming the trauma of a resilient and multifaceted culture into the backbone of one of the most affecting video games I've ever played. Its combat and platforming aren't exactly wow-worthy, leaning on tried-and-true PlayStation 2-era mechanics without pushing them forward in any meaningful way, but those shortcomings are overshadowed by memorable characters, catchy tunes, and incredible visuals. Like I said in my South of Midnight review(https://www.gamespot.com/reviews/south-of-midnight-review-a-love-letter-to-the-american-deep-south/1900-6418352/), "Compulsion Games hasn’t made a direct sequel to any of its games yet, but it needs to make an exception here." South of Midnight is just that great. Compulsion Games has a real winner here, and you should support the studio by buying and playing South of Midnight, and then joining me in celebrating this gaming accomplishment.
