Sony shutting down PlayStation Store on PS3, Vita by 2027

Overview & Key Takeaways

PlayStation Store support on PlayStation 3 and PS Vita will end completely by July 2027, but some countries will be cut off much sooner, Sony confirms

Sony announced Wednesday that it plans to end support for the PlayStation Store on two platforms starting later this year. The PlayStation Store on PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita will officially close by July 2027, but some markets will be impacted much sooner.

"As the PlayStation Store continues to evolve to support modern commerce systems, including updated payment processing standards, PS3 and PS Vita are no longer able to support these updates at the level required," said Sid Shuman, senior director SIE content communications, on the PlayStation Blog. The first of those closures will start next month.

Here's the rollout for PlayStation Store closures on PS3 and PS Vita:

  • Mexico, Honduras, Nicaragua โ€“ PlayStation Store on PS3 will close starting August 2026.
  • Additional Latin American and Middle Eastern countries โ€“ PlayStation Store on PS3 will close starting late 2026.
  • In all other countries, PlayStation Store on PS3 and PS Vita will close in July 2027.

SIE acknowledges that "this news may be disappointing to PS3 and PS Vita players who hold a special place in their hearts for this generation of gaming. PS3 and PS Vita represent an important era in our PlayStation history, so this was not an easy decision for us to make."

PlayStation Store access for new purchases ended on PS3 and Vita in 2021, but users on those platforms have been able to redownload games from the store's servers.

Sony's PlayStation 3 launched in November 2006, alongside the PlayStation Store, which offers digital games, demos, and other downloadable content. Sony released the PlayStation Vita in December 2011, with the handheld supporting the PlayStation Store out of the gate. Sony ended production on PS3 hardware in 2017, and ended production of the Vita in 2019.

The PlayStation 3 and Vita were both home to a long list of digital-only games, and active users of those older PlayStation platforms may want to grab what they can, while they can.

Sony's announcement that it plans to end support for the PlayStation Store on PS3 and Vita arrived alongside bad news for physical game enthusiasts. The PlayStation maker also announced Wednesday it will end physical game disc production in 2028.

Watch God Of War Laufey Star Smash The Last Of Us Golf Club Prop On Her First Day

Deborah Ann Woll plays Faye in the upcoming PS5 game God of War Laufey(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/god-of-war-laufey-gameplay-release-date-and-everything-we-know-so-far/), and she had quite a memorable first day on set. At San Diego Comic-Con recently, she shared a story about how, on her very first day, she broke a famous prop from The Last of Us due to her strength and tenacity--only she didn't know the significance at the time. And now, footage of the event has arrived. "Unbeknownst to me, this was a very famous prop that they had used on The Last of Us," she said, going on to joke that it was "some sort of sporting equipment." It was actually a golf club prop, and you probably know what that means... "They gave it to me and I was supposed to use it like an axe. And I broke it," Woll said. Game director Ariel Lawrence added, "She swung it so hard, it cracked. And it echoed throughout the volume. And we were like, 'Hot damn, let's go.'" https://twitter.com/SonySantaMonica/status/2088280064974635337 God of War: Laufey is in the works now for PS5, and it's arriving in February 2027(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/surprise-god-of-war-laufey-has-a-release-date-and-its-kratos-led-sequel-has-been-announced/). Starring alongside Woll is The Boys actor Jack Quaid, who plays a gelatinous cube named Phranque(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/god-of-war-laufeys-phranque-is-far-from-just-a-cube/). A new Kratos-led game(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/surprise-god-of-war-laufey-has-a-release-date-and-its-kratos-led-sequel-has-been-announced/) is coming after that, and it will pick up where Laufey left off(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/kratos-next-god-of-war-game-will-pick-up-where-laufey-leaves-off/).

Wolverine on the PS5 made me care about Marvelโ€™s mutant for the first time

Going into my demo of Marvel's Wolverine, I mainly wanted to try out the game's very bloody combat. And it is delightfully bloody. But after two-ish hours of slashing and stabbing (and parrying!) enemies with Wolverine's claws, I left surprised - despite no previous attachment to the character, I was deeply endeared to Logan himself. &8230;
