Overview & Key Takeaways

Viktor Antonov worked on the game that looks like Doom meets Dark Souls before his death in 2025

Developer Eschatology Entertainment has announced Guns of Eschaton, a Soulslike FPS that takes place in a supernatural version of the Wild West. The announcement comes alongside a stunning reveal trailer that highlights the game's gothic cowboy setting. The game's aesthetic was designed by Viktor Antonov, the art director of Half-Life 2 and Dishonored, who died in 2025.

Guns of Eschaton is described as "the world's first Soulslike FPS" as well as a supernatural horror Western. In line with Western genre tropes, the game stars a lone gunslinger roaming the land and taking down anyone that stands in his way. This gunslinger, however, has six arms to help in his journey across the apocalyptic wasteland. The official synopsis of the game is as follows:

You are a man who has lost almost everything, trying to return home before the last scraps are taken from him. The road ahead runs across the Old South of America - now transformed into a haunted frontier of ruined settlements, mythic roads, impossible machines, monstrous factions, and historical figures caught between legend and damnation. This is not only the end of America. It is the beginning of something far worse.

In a press release, Eschatology studio head Fuad Kuliev says, "We are incredibly honoured to be revealing Guns of Eschaton, the final project shaped by the extraordinary vision of Viktor Antonov." Antonov is most famous for serving as the art director on Dishonored and Half-Life 2, but he also worked on titles like Fallout 4, Prey, and DOOM (the influence of which is on full display in the Guns of Eschaton trailer). "From the earliest stages of development," Kuliev continues, "I had the privilege of shaping this world together with Viktor: where ideas, themes, and concepts evolved through his talent into the world players will see today."

Gameplay looks like a wild mix between the fast-paced FPS mechanics of DOOM and the tough-as-nails grind of the Dark Souls franchise. Guns of Eschaton's Steam page emphasizes how much of a Soulslike the game is, despite the protagonist wielding guns instead of swords. The game will have more than 20 unique weapons that are "built around the feel, limitations, and brutality of 19th-century firearms." Like other Souls-inspired titles, Guns of Eschaton will encourage players to find unique playstyles through the use of active and passive abilities, custom bullets, armor, consumables, and more.

Bullet variety plays a major role in combat, with enemies having special weaknesses for players to exploit. A particularly interesting enemy design spotted in the trailer is what appears to be an evil train, and as Final Fantasy 6 has established, fighting a train in a video game is always cool. Guns of Eschaton will be playable solo or in co-op.

Guns of Eschaton will be released on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Windows PC. It has no release date at this time.

We still don't know much about the overall plot other than that the protagonist, known as The Stranger, must survive the dangers of the irradiated surface as well as threats hiding in the underground metro tunnels. Like previous Metro titles, 2039 blends first-person shooting with survival mechanics and elements of horror. Check out the game's latest trailer below. Metro 2039 is coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC in February, but it does not have an exact release date.

Metro 2039 Explores The Horror Humans Can Commit In Latest Gameplay Trailer

The Metro games have never shied away from shoving players into a bleak post-apocalyptic world, but in Metro 2039, things are looking especially grim. Ahead of its release in 2027, a new gameplay trailer for Metro 2039 was revealed at Gamescom Opening Night Live(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/gamescom-opening-night-live-2026-all-the-biggest-announcements-games-and-trailers/), showing how players will have to deal with a new regime that has risen from the ashes of the nuclear war that turned the world into a radioactive wasteland. The gameplay showcased several hallmarks of the Metro's distinct action. These include dangerous metro tunnels filled with soldiers, monsters inhabiting the radiation-filled surface, and the many, many guns you'll have to dispatch them with. Like previous entries, you'll be able to craft weapons to suit your playstyle, with the gameplay showcasing an aggressive approach to the series' stealth action. https://youtu.be/fijVZlJ9rNc While Metro 2039 still features mutated monsters and ghouls, it seems 4A Games is focusing more on the atrocities humans can commit in this sequel. As described by developers on stage at Opening Night Live, Metro 2039 is about consequences: the cost of silence, the horror of tyranny, the price of freedom. It is clear the studio is drawing from its experience of developing the sequel while enduring the ongoing war in Ukraine. Metro 2039 features a new protagonist(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/metro-2039-arrives-next-february-and-nazis-have-overtaken-moscow/), known as the Stranger(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/metro-2039-will-feature-a-new-protagonist-out-this-winter/1100-6539454/). A new power has risen in the form of the Spartan Order, which has evolved from a force for good in the older Metro games into a twisted, authoritarian movement known as the Novareich. Led by Hunter--the very same Spartan Ranger from Metro 2033--the Stranger comes out of exile and embarks on a journey through the remains of Moscow to take down the Novareich and Hunter, its Führer. Developer 4A Games says that Metro 2039 will be a shocking entry in the series: one where players will have to master exploration, survival, combat, and stealth skills to stand a chance at seeing the Stranger's mission through to the end. Despite being a sequel to the original trilogy, 4A Games says this will be an ideal point to jump in if you haven't yet, too. Metro 2039 launches for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S in February 2027.
