Sony Sets Expectations Ahead Of PS6: No More “Significant” Hardware Losses

GameSpot » All News RSS FeedDarryn Bonthuys4 min read(about 2 months ago)

Overview & Key Takeaways

The current generation of gaming has only gotten more expensive lately, and it looks like the next generation of PlayStation consoles will also be a pricy purchase. With concern growing about the yet-to-be-revealed PS6 possibly selling for $1,000 or more when it launches, Sony confirmed that it's not prepared to take a "significant" hit on absorbing some of the costs for its next-gen hardware.

When quizzed about hardware pricing and profitability for the "next-generation platform" during a Q&A session at Sony's Game & Network Services division, Sony executives said that they recognize that hardware is ultimately the most important part of a gaming experience, and they want consumers to recognize this.

"As for pricing, it is not realistic for us to absorb all component cost increases, and we have already implemented some price increases outside Japan," Sony Interactive Entertainment president and CEO Hideaki Nishino said. "At present, however, sales are proceeding as planned, and we do not believe this has led to a decline in customer demand. "As a principle, we do not intend to sell hardware at significant losses. At the same time, we are carefully monitoring the market and continuing to evaluate our approach. We believe it is important for us to make every effort to ensure that customers fully understand the value we provide in relation to pricing."

One thing worth noting from Nishino's comments is that sales are still within Sony's projections, even though PS5 consoles have only gotten more expensive with time. Despite that, May was a dismal month for PlayStation in the United States. Spending on PS5 consoles dropped 43% year-on-year, and overall unit sales fell dramatically by 58%, making May the lowest month for PlayStation sales in 26 years. It was also a bad month for Microsoft, as it suffered the worst May performance since the Xbox console first debuted in November 2001.

The ongoing shortage of memory chips and rising costs have also reportedly thrown Sony's PS6 plans into disarray, with some experts believing that it will only launch toward the end of the decade. Earlier this year, Sony increased the price of the PS5, and the company also said that it has yet to determine pricing or a launch date for its next-gen console.

Meanwhile, things aren't looking too good at Microsoft either. The Xbox Series X|S consoles are also more expensive than ever, and Microsoft hasn't ruled out the possibility of another price hike in 2027.

Watch God Of War Laufey Star Smash The Last Of Us Golf Club Prop On Her First Day

Deborah Ann Woll plays Faye in the upcoming PS5 game God of War Laufey(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/god-of-war-laufey-gameplay-release-date-and-everything-we-know-so-far/), and she had quite a memorable first day on set. At San Diego Comic-Con recently, she shared a story about how, on her very first day, she broke a famous prop from The Last of Us due to her strength and tenacity--only she didn't know the significance at the time. And now, footage of the event has arrived. "Unbeknownst to me, this was a very famous prop that they had used on The Last of Us," she said, going on to joke that it was "some sort of sporting equipment." It was actually a golf club prop, and you probably know what that means... "They gave it to me and I was supposed to use it like an axe. And I broke it," Woll said. Game director Ariel Lawrence added, "She swung it so hard, it cracked. And it echoed throughout the volume. And we were like, 'Hot damn, let's go.'" https://twitter.com/SonySantaMonica/status/2088280064974635337 God of War: Laufey is in the works now for PS5, and it's arriving in February 2027(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/surprise-god-of-war-laufey-has-a-release-date-and-its-kratos-led-sequel-has-been-announced/). Starring alongside Woll is The Boys actor Jack Quaid, who plays a gelatinous cube named Phranque(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/god-of-war-laufeys-phranque-is-far-from-just-a-cube/). A new Kratos-led game(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/surprise-god-of-war-laufey-has-a-release-date-and-its-kratos-led-sequel-has-been-announced/) is coming after that, and it will pick up where Laufey left off(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/kratos-next-god-of-war-game-will-pick-up-where-laufey-leaves-off/).

Wolverine on the PS5 made me care about Marvel’s mutant for the first time

Going into my demo of Marvel's Wolverine, I mainly wanted to try out the game's very bloody combat. And it is delightfully bloody. But after two-ish hours of slashing and stabbing (and parrying!) enemies with Wolverine's claws, I left surprised - despite no previous attachment to the character, I was deeply endeared to Logan himself. &8230;
