Madoka Magica's long-awaited 4th film finally has a release date

Polygon RSS FeedWilla Rowe3 min read(about 2 months ago)

Overview & Key Takeaways

The series that is basically magical girl Evangelion is returning after more than a decade with Madoka Magica the Movie: Walpurgisnacht Rising.

The wait for the next Puella Magi Madoka Magica film is almost over, hopefully. The oft-delayed and long-awaited fourth entry in the subversive magical girl anime series is finally set to be released on Aug. 28 in Japan.

Aniplex announced the release of the fourth full-length Madoka Magica movie alongside the release of a full-length trailer for the animated feature. The full name of the feature is Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie Walpurgisnacht: Rising. That sure is a mouthful.

Madoka Magica first premiered as a 12-episode anime series from studio Shaft in 2011. The show follows a group of schoolgirls, including the titular Madoka Kaname, who make contracts to become magical girls and fight enemies called witches. Over the course of the series, Madoka Magica subverts the tropes of the magical girl genre (think Sailor Moon) and takes a dark turn by revealing all magical girls eventually succumb to a deep despair and turn into witches. Simplistically, this is to magical girl anime as Neon Genesis Evangelion is to mech anime.

Much like Evangelion, Madoka Magica began a reboot/sequel series of films starting in 2012. The first two films, Beginnings and Eternal, were released in 2012 one week apart from each other and retell the same plot covered in the 12-episode anime. A third film, Rebellion, was released in 2013 and told an original story that further chronicled the adventures of the main group of magical girls. Walpurgisnacht: Rising was teased as a concept in 2015 before officially getting announced in 2021. Initially slated for a 2024 release, the project was delayed to 2025 and then later to February 2026, and finally (fingers crossed) to August.

To summarize as simply as possible, the original series ended with Madoka essentially ascending to godhood and creating a new world free of the despair that plagues magical girls. This decision also erases Madoka from people's minds, except for her friend and fellow magical girl Homura Akemi. Homura had spent the series traveling back in time in an attempt to keep Madoka from the tragic fate of all magical girls. The ending of the series, while bittersweet, was somewhat hopeful in that Madoka gave people a new world and Homura seems willing to move on with her life.

Rebellion diverged from this by showing Homura interceding in Madoka's ascension to godhood, instead taking the power for herself and creating a new universe where Madoka lives even at the cost of forcing others to continue suffering. The trailer for Walpurgisnacht: Rising picks up from there, setting the stage for a confrontation between Homura and the other magical girls. While there have been no official announcements, it seems likely that this will serve as a conclusion to the film series.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie Walpurgisnacht: Rising will be released on Aug. 28 in Japan. There is no information on an international release at this time.

We still don't know much about the overall plot other than that the protagonist, known as The Stranger, must survive the dangers of the irradiated surface as well as threats hiding in the underground metro tunnels. Like previous Metro titles, 2039 blends first-person shooting with survival mechanics and elements of horror. Check out the game's latest trailer below. Metro 2039 is coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC in February, but it does not have an exact release date.

Metro 2039 Explores The Horror Humans Can Commit In Latest Gameplay Trailer

The Metro games have never shied away from shoving players into a bleak post-apocalyptic world, but in Metro 2039, things are looking especially grim. Ahead of its release in 2027, a new gameplay trailer for Metro 2039 was revealed at Gamescom Opening Night Live(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/gamescom-opening-night-live-2026-all-the-biggest-announcements-games-and-trailers/), showing how players will have to deal with a new regime that has risen from the ashes of the nuclear war that turned the world into a radioactive wasteland. The gameplay showcased several hallmarks of the Metro's distinct action. These include dangerous metro tunnels filled with soldiers, monsters inhabiting the radiation-filled surface, and the many, many guns you'll have to dispatch them with. Like previous entries, you'll be able to craft weapons to suit your playstyle, with the gameplay showcasing an aggressive approach to the series' stealth action. https://youtu.be/fijVZlJ9rNc While Metro 2039 still features mutated monsters and ghouls, it seems 4A Games is focusing more on the atrocities humans can commit in this sequel. As described by developers on stage at Opening Night Live, Metro 2039 is about consequences: the cost of silence, the horror of tyranny, the price of freedom. It is clear the studio is drawing from its experience of developing the sequel while enduring the ongoing war in Ukraine. Metro 2039 features a new protagonist(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/metro-2039-arrives-next-february-and-nazis-have-overtaken-moscow/), known as the Stranger(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/metro-2039-will-feature-a-new-protagonist-out-this-winter/1100-6539454/). A new power has risen in the form of the Spartan Order, which has evolved from a force for good in the older Metro games into a twisted, authoritarian movement known as the Novareich. Led by Hunter--the very same Spartan Ranger from Metro 2033--the Stranger comes out of exile and embarks on a journey through the remains of Moscow to take down the Novareich and Hunter, its Führer. Developer 4A Games says that Metro 2039 will be a shocking entry in the series: one where players will have to master exploration, survival, combat, and stealth skills to stand a chance at seeing the Stranger's mission through to the end. Despite being a sequel to the original trilogy, 4A Games says this will be an ideal point to jump in if you haven't yet, too. Metro 2039 launches for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S in February 2027.
