FF7 Revelation's visionary is looking beyond a Final Fantasy 6 remake

Overview & Key Takeaways

It doesn't seem like director Naoki Hamaguchi wants to work on another remake after Final Fantasy VII Revelation

While a Final Fantasy 6 remake is in high demand from Square Enix's fans, don't expect that to be the next project the Final Fantasy 7 Revelation team moves on to. In particular, director Naoki Hamaguchi doesn't seem to want to work on a Final Fantasy 6 remake.

This admission came during an interview with Game Informer about next year's Final Fantasy 7 Revelation. Hamaguchi, who directed all three games in the Final Fantasy 7 remake series, was asked about what he may develop next. His response indicated that he knows fans want Square Enix to create a Final Fantasy 6 remake, but that he doesn't have much personal interest in developing that kind of game.

"I do see a lot of fans and community asking me to take on the helm for a FF6 remake," he explained."So, I'm seeing a lot of that floating online, but, you know, a Final Fantasy 6 Remake or any other remake, it could be me, or it could be someone else. Personally, I think that it might be in better hands if it went to another creator in Square Enix."

Considering the past decade of his life has been spent working on a reinterpretation of an existing game, it's understandable that Hamaguchi doesn't want to jump right into a similar project after wrapping up work on Final Fantasy 7 Revelation. As for what he wants to work on, Hamaguchi told Game Informer that he does plan on sticking around in the JRPG genre.

"In terms of what I personally want to do, obviously, I think my next creative work is also going to be a JRPG," Hamaguchi explained. "When you look at all the other titles that we have released at Square Enix, not just the FF7 Remake series, I think Square Enix, as a brand, as a company, is more than capable of delivering this grand-scale RPG that could resonate to gamers across the world. Fans might have a lot of different expectations, but for me personally, I do want to take on this new challenge with another RPG title after this, whether it be Final Fantasy or a different IP."

It will still be some time before Hamaguchi has to determine what his next project will be, as Final Fantasy 7 Revelation's development has not wrapped up yet. It will be released for Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X in spring 2027.

Surprise Xbox Game To Be Announced At Gamescom, Insider Says

Microsoft is gearing up to announce a new game at Gamescom this month, it appears, and it could be from an established series. Insider NateTheHate 2(https://x.com/NateTheHate2/status/2088674549428556273) said, "I've heard of a neat Xbox announcement that should be at Gamescom." He said it will be a "new game in a series" as opposed to a new IP. And no, it's not a new Banjo-Kazooie game, he said(https://x.com/NateTheHate2/status/2089442879185748013). He added that, whatever the project is, it's from a franchise that Microsoft owns(https://x.com/NateTheHate2/status/2089457810501251429), but it's not being made by a studio that Microsoft owns(https://x.com/NateTheHate2/status/2089460969919426888). That leaves open a lot of possibilities, so your guess is as good as anyone's right now as to what it may be and which studio could be behind it. !(https://www.gamespot.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/XboxGamescom.jpg?w=636) Microsoft has an announcement on tap for Gamescom, it seems. That's all we have to go on for now, but with Gamescom coming up soon, we should find out shortly. Xbox is not holding its own dedicated showcase at Gamescom, but it's possible the announcement could come during Geoff Keighley's Opening Night Live on August 25. The Xbox booth at Gamescom(https://news.xbox.com/en-us/2026/07/28/xbox-gamescom-2026/) will feature 25 upcoming games, including Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, Fable, Minecraft Dungeons II, Gears of War: E-Day, Metro 2039, Stranger Than Heaven, and Alien: Isolation 2. There will also be live broadcasts from the Xbox booth August 26 and August 27, featuring interviews, guests, gameplay reveals, trailers, "and more." Perhaps one of the interview slots will be about this upcoming mystery game. 2026 is the 25th anniversary of Xbox, and the company has a lot planned(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/xbox-unveils-new-25th-anniversary-edition-xbox-series-x-based-on-original-xbox-and-its-gonna-be-pricey/).
