Overview & Key Takeaways

You'll probably notice pretty early on in Subnautica 2 that when you try to eat things, it tells you that you've got Digestive Incompatibility. Basically, you're not built to eat the things in this new alien planet you've found yourself on.

And while it won't have you rushing for the ocean toilet, it will make satiating your hunger pretty difficult. Here's what you need to do to cure Digestive Incompatibility in Subnautica 2 and munch up some delicious fish and other recipes.

How to cure Digestive Incompatibility

Living in Subnautica 2 has many challenges and boy, don't I know it. But, aside from terrifying creatures that'll snaffle you up or flora and fauna that'll cause you harm, there's also the fact that you're just not built to survive in the environment.

Fortunately, you'll quickly learn about Adaptations, starting from the game's prologue where you'll be instructed to touch a big purple plant to gain the ability of surviving the ocean's pressure.

You'll then need to figure out pretty quickly how to digest the food if you want to eat. You'll notice when you try to consume fish, it'll say you have Digestive Incompatibility.

For this one, you're on the hunt for another purple plant, but not all Adaptations in Subnautica 2 are plant-based. For now though, let's focus on how to cure Digestive Incompatibility before you starve to death by following these simple steps:

  1. Activate NOA in your lifepod.
  2. Wait for the Missing Colonists message.
  3. Wait for a message about Anita that will prompt a location marker.
  4. Head to the marker and interact with Anita's black box (around 160 meters northeast from your lifepod).
  5. Anita's black box will be found conveniently next to the big purple plant you need to interact with.
  6. Place your hand inside the plant when prompted and this will trigger the digestion adaptation.

You may have stumbled upon the big purple plant before this, like me, and remembered it from the prologue where you solve your issue with pressure. I did this quest in reverse by interacting with the plant and then with Anita's black box, but the outcome is the same.

Then, you'll be able to digest food around you from the easy-to-catch fish like Halfmoon, Bluemoon and Harvestmoon. Take them to your Fabricator to cook them up and then enjoy your food. You can also create an Oily Salad at your Fabricator by using the Fibrous Pulp resource. If you're yet to find it, be sure to check out our guide on how to get Fibrous Pulp.

And that's it! You're now equipped to consume your surroundings in Subnautica 2. But, the journey doesn't end there. There's plenty more to learn about, including how to increase your max oxygen and where to find Silver. Both these guides will help you to thrive under the water in those early stages, instead of, well, dying.
