Overview & Key Takeaways

The new trailer for Final Fantasy 7 Revolution revealed the release date and showed off a bunch of jaw-dropping gameplay footage.

We’ve finally gotten our first glimpse at the final chapter of Final Fantasy 7 remake trilogy. Square Enix debuted its first footage for the RPG, which finally revealed the game’s official title: Final Fantasy 7 Revelation.

The trailer came during today’s Summer Game Fest stream, which featured more than two hours worth of game announcements. We got a glimpse of a new Resident Evil and a new Stellar Blade, but Final Fantasy 7 Revelation was one of the showcase’s biggest surprises.

Aside from revealing the title, the trailer gave us a quick tease of what’s coming in the final chapter. The crew will be able to fly the Highwind airship around Revelation's open world; no matter where you take it, you can jump out of the ship and parachute to the ground in a seamless transition. You'll visit many key Final Fantasy 7 locations across the Planet, including Wutai.

Naoki Hamaguchi is looking to reach a new generation of players

The battle system from the first two games has been "perfected," said Matt Mercer, who voices the game's brooding goth Vincent Valentine, during the Summer Game Fest stream. This time around, Vincent will be a playable party member who uses a rifle, while Cid joins the party wielding a spear. Good thing, since you'll need to fight the Weapons — massive creatures spawned by the Planet itself. The Summer Game Fest trailer ended with a glimpse of a Godzilla-sized creature emerging from the ocean.

Final Fantasy 7 Revelation's appearance wasn’t a total shocker. Earlier this year, Polygon spoke to director Naoki Hamaguchi, who teased that the project was further along in development than fans might be expecting: “I believe that at this point the game is playable, technically, but we are still trying to polish it so it is at a quality where we can deliver it to our players,” Hamaguchi said.

Square Enix did not announce an official release date for Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, though it will be released in spring 2027. It’s expected to launch simultaneously on Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X.

Watch God Of War Laufey Star Smash The Last Of Us Golf Club Prop On Her First Day

Deborah Ann Woll plays Faye in the upcoming PS5 game God of War Laufey(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/god-of-war-laufey-gameplay-release-date-and-everything-we-know-so-far/), and she had quite a memorable first day on set. At San Diego Comic-Con recently, she shared a story about how, on her very first day, she broke a famous prop from The Last of Us due to her strength and tenacity--only she didn't know the significance at the time. And now, footage of the event has arrived. "Unbeknownst to me, this was a very famous prop that they had used on The Last of Us," she said, going on to joke that it was "some sort of sporting equipment." It was actually a golf club prop, and you probably know what that means... "They gave it to me and I was supposed to use it like an axe. And I broke it," Woll said. Game director Ariel Lawrence added, "She swung it so hard, it cracked. And it echoed throughout the volume. And we were like, 'Hot damn, let's go.'" https://twitter.com/SonySantaMonica/status/2088280064974635337 God of War: Laufey is in the works now for PS5, and it's arriving in February 2027(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/surprise-god-of-war-laufey-has-a-release-date-and-its-kratos-led-sequel-has-been-announced/). Starring alongside Woll is The Boys actor Jack Quaid, who plays a gelatinous cube named Phranque(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/god-of-war-laufeys-phranque-is-far-from-just-a-cube/). A new Kratos-led game(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/surprise-god-of-war-laufey-has-a-release-date-and-its-kratos-led-sequel-has-been-announced/) is coming after that, and it will pick up where Laufey left off(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/kratos-next-god-of-war-game-will-pick-up-where-laufey-leaves-off/).

Wolverine on the PS5 made me care about Marvel’s mutant for the first time

Going into my demo of Marvel's Wolverine, I mainly wanted to try out the game's very bloody combat. And it is delightfully bloody. But after two-ish hours of slashing and stabbing (and parrying!) enemies with Wolverine's claws, I left surprised - despite no previous attachment to the character, I was deeply endeared to Logan himself. &8230;
