The X-Men Don’t Exist In Insomniac’s Wolverine, But Another Important Team Does

Overview & Key Takeaways

Marvel's Wolverine finally got its big gameplay reveal during Sony's latest State of Play showcase, alongside first looks at a variety of new characters from the wider X-Men universe. With mutants being rounded up by Trask Industries and other factions, it begs the question: where are the other X-Men? It turns out, they don't exist in this version of Wolverine's universe.

That's according to creative director Marcus Smith, who confirmed that the mutant-defending team would not feature in Insomniac's Wolverine. Instead, the game will feature Team X, which is described as a globe-trotting group of mercenary mutants who are protecting other mutants in danger. In this universe, most mutants are still living in secret, so the idea of Professor Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters seems a while away.

"In our world, mutants aren’t really that well known throughout the world, so they’re mostly in hiding because they’re pretty vulnerable," Smith explained to Variety. "In our trailer that we set up, Logan is hunting down some mutants who’ve been kidnapped by cybernetically enhanced mercenaries called the Reavers, and that’s when he discovers there’s yet another mutant who is also trying to save them, and that’s where he and Jean cross paths."

That would explain why Logan doesn't seem to recognize Jean Grey in the trailer, but might also give some hints as to why other characters also appear. Mystique is seen fighting Reavers near the end of the trailer, suggesting that she might be another member of Team X. While Omega Red and Sabretooth have also been associated with the group in the past, it's clear here that they're villains you'll have to deal with as Wolverine, and likely not aligned with saving other mutants.

One associate of Team X in the comics has been Lady Deathstrike, who has not featured in a trailer yet. She has also lead the Reavers in the past, who are pominently featured (and torn up) in this latest gameplay trailer. So it's possible Insomniac could be reserving her introduction as a surprise later down the line.

There are many Marvel characters that are making an appearance in Wolverine, in large and small roles alike. Check out our list of everyone you might have missed from the latest trailer before Wolverine launches exclusively on PS5 on September 15.

Watch God Of War Laufey Star Smash The Last Of Us Golf Club Prop On Her First Day

Deborah Ann Woll plays Faye in the upcoming PS5 game God of War Laufey(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/god-of-war-laufey-gameplay-release-date-and-everything-we-know-so-far/), and she had quite a memorable first day on set. At San Diego Comic-Con recently, she shared a story about how, on her very first day, she broke a famous prop from The Last of Us due to her strength and tenacity--only she didn't know the significance at the time. And now, footage of the event has arrived. "Unbeknownst to me, this was a very famous prop that they had used on The Last of Us," she said, going on to joke that it was "some sort of sporting equipment." It was actually a golf club prop, and you probably know what that means... "They gave it to me and I was supposed to use it like an axe. And I broke it," Woll said. Game director Ariel Lawrence added, "She swung it so hard, it cracked. And it echoed throughout the volume. And we were like, 'Hot damn, let's go.'" https://twitter.com/SonySantaMonica/status/2088280064974635337 God of War: Laufey is in the works now for PS5, and it's arriving in February 2027(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/surprise-god-of-war-laufey-has-a-release-date-and-its-kratos-led-sequel-has-been-announced/). Starring alongside Woll is The Boys actor Jack Quaid, who plays a gelatinous cube named Phranque(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/god-of-war-laufeys-phranque-is-far-from-just-a-cube/). A new Kratos-led game(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/surprise-god-of-war-laufey-has-a-release-date-and-its-kratos-led-sequel-has-been-announced/) is coming after that, and it will pick up where Laufey left off(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/kratos-next-god-of-war-game-will-pick-up-where-laufey-leaves-off/).

Wolverine on the PS5 made me care about Marvel’s mutant for the first time

Going into my demo of Marvel's Wolverine, I mainly wanted to try out the game's very bloody combat. And it is delightfully bloody. But after two-ish hours of slashing and stabbing (and parrying!) enemies with Wolverine's claws, I left surprised - despite no previous attachment to the character, I was deeply endeared to Logan himself. &8230;
