Sony cemented the most stylish PS5 game ever made with a trailer

Overview & Key Takeaways

Kemuri is an action PS5 game that reaches hypebeast levels of cool. Fans of Spider-Man or Splatoon will want to check it out.

Tuesday's State of Play kicked off in style thanks to Ikumi Nakamura, who showed off the first gameplay trailer for the upcoming PlayStation 5 game, Kemuri. In it, you're a yokai hunter who roams the streets in search of supernatural monsters โ€” and you can bring along some friends for the ride (provided you've got PlayStation Plus!)

When it was originally revealed in 2023, Kemuri was described by studio Unseen as a blend of Japanese folklore, anime aesthetics, and modern culture. Clothing is a huge focus for the game. As you form contracts with demons, you can "wear" them and take on their powers. While some of these creatures have a real-world history, other yokai were developed exclusively for the game.

"This world challenges yokai hunters to confront existential themes and moral dilemmas as they track and fight their prey in fast paced combat," the game's press kit reads. "Collect a wide range of yokai โ€” some malevolent, some friendly โ€” to transform your appearance and access their paranormal abilities."

Check out the latest gameplay trailer below.

Although the PlayStation Blog says that there are many ways to fight, a few specific archetypes do appear. You can be a hunter who gets up close and personal, or fight from afar with magical powers.

Beyond the rad aesthetics, Kemuri looks like a blast to play as well. It's got the sort of thrilling cityscape platforming you'd expect from games like Marvel's Spider-Man or Gravity Rush, but with the sensibility of a Splatoon game aimed at teenage hypebeasts.

You might remember Ikumi Nakamura from 2019, when her bubbly personality made her a minor gaming celebrity. If you're someone with taste, then you might know her from classics like Okami, Bayonetta, and Resident Evil 2. Given her resume โ€” and fashion sense โ€” it's not a huge shocker she'd be leading a game that looks this cool. It's only fitting that Unseen is already selling some hot merch.

Kemuri will be released for PS5 sometime in 2027.

Watch God Of War Laufey Star Smash The Last Of Us Golf Club Prop On Her First Day

Deborah Ann Woll plays Faye in the upcoming PS5 game God of War Laufey(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/god-of-war-laufey-gameplay-release-date-and-everything-we-know-so-far/), and she had quite a memorable first day on set. At San Diego Comic-Con recently, she shared a story about how, on her very first day, she broke a famous prop from The Last of Us due to her strength and tenacity--only she didn't know the significance at the time. And now, footage of the event has arrived. "Unbeknownst to me, this was a very famous prop that they had used on The Last of Us," she said, going on to joke that it was "some sort of sporting equipment." It was actually a golf club prop, and you probably know what that means... "They gave it to me and I was supposed to use it like an axe. And I broke it," Woll said. Game director Ariel Lawrence added, "She swung it so hard, it cracked. And it echoed throughout the volume. And we were like, 'Hot damn, let's go.'" https://twitter.com/SonySantaMonica/status/2088280064974635337 God of War: Laufey is in the works now for PS5, and it's arriving in February 2027(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/surprise-god-of-war-laufey-has-a-release-date-and-its-kratos-led-sequel-has-been-announced/). Starring alongside Woll is The Boys actor Jack Quaid, who plays a gelatinous cube named Phranque(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/god-of-war-laufeys-phranque-is-far-from-just-a-cube/). A new Kratos-led game(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/surprise-god-of-war-laufey-has-a-release-date-and-its-kratos-led-sequel-has-been-announced/) is coming after that, and it will pick up where Laufey left off(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/kratos-next-god-of-war-game-will-pick-up-where-laufey-leaves-off/).

Wolverine on the PS5 made me care about Marvelโ€™s mutant for the first time

Going into my demo of Marvel's Wolverine, I mainly wanted to try out the game's very bloody combat. And it is delightfully bloody. But after two-ish hours of slashing and stabbing (and parrying!) enemies with Wolverine's claws, I left surprised - despite no previous attachment to the character, I was deeply endeared to Logan himself. &8230;
