Marvel's Wolverine gameplay trailer debuts at State of Play with 10 minutes of brutal gameplay

Overview & Key Takeaways

In new footage of the PS5 exclusive, it's clear Insomniac wasn't kidding about the level of violence fans can expect

During the PlayStation State of Play broadcast on Tuesday, Insomniac Games revealed a boatload of fresh new details about Marvel's Wolverine, which launches exclusively on PlayStation 5 on Sept. 15. In the new footage of the game, we learned that Insomniac was NOT playing around about the blood in this game — and that Wolverine is a hairy, beefy daddy who's set to give Leon Kennedy a run for his money this fall.

Just look at the ham hocks on this guy! The healing factor isn't the only mutation happening here.

Ahead of the gameplay footage, Marvel's Wolverine director Marcus Smith said, "Wolverine is a race against time to rescue a group of kidnapped mutants," but Logan "quickly discovers he's not the only mutant attempting to save them."

The official PlayStation Blog has more details about where this moment falls in the story: "Logan is tailing a group of mutants that have been hunted and captured by the Reavers, a guns-for-hire cybernetic militia. The Reavers have plans to deliver the mutants to their client, Bolivar Trask – a billionaire industrialist driven by a fanatical belief in human superiority. We also introduce another major player in Logan’s journey: Jean Grey, a powerful telekinetic and emergent leader of the captured mutants."

We then see an extended in-engine sequence from the game, where Wolverine is making his way through a gaggle of grunts in what appears to be an abandoned factory or shipping yard. As a satisfying amuse bouche for what's in store, Logan peers down from a rooftop, then impales a man through the back of the neck with his claws after jumping down about 100 feet. Nice.

There's not a non-lethal combat clause here like with Batman or Spider-Man — Logan is absolutely shredding his opponents with his adamantium claws, and emerges from each brief encounter coated head-to-toe with blood. (The second person he kills in the trailer is definitely a woman with prosthetic legs, which is pretty shocking!) At numerous points in the footage, we see Wolverine's healing factor kicking in, as abrasions and wounds tidily draw close, with healthy flesh in their place. (His suit also appears to have regenerative powers too, with tears and rips repairing themselves.

The action then moves to the back of a semi-truck, and Logan jumps from vehicle to vehicle letting his opponents have it in violent fashion. At one point, Logan is quite literally run over by a semi, but he shrugs it off, drops to the asphalt, and allows himself to be dragged behind the truck. Logan finally reaches the mutants he's tracking down. "Are you a superhero?" asks a green mutant kid. "No, kid. I'm Wolverine," he growls, as he's grazed by a bullet skidding off his meaty bicep.

Marvel's Wolverine marks a departure from Insomniac's previous superhero offerings, namely the three Spider-Man games for PS4 and PS5. Spidey's attacks are consistently non-lethal, to the point where even if you launch an enemy off a building, they'll end up miraculously webbed onto a wall. Marvel's Wolverine promises to be a far more violent affair. In a September 2025 State of Play presentation, Insomniac devs highlighted the game's cutting-edge "blood tech," including a moment where Wolvy shoves his claws through a man's jaw until they emerge out the top of his head. According to the game's official site, "The game will explore Logan's signature spin on heroism – which is much darker and more brutal than you might expect from Insomniac."

The upcoming game tells an original story that will take Logan to a variety of locations familiar to Marvel fans, including the Canadian wilderness, Japan, and Madripoor. Fans can also expect to see some familiar faces along the way, including the shapeshifter Mystique, Jean Grey, Sabertooth, and the Soviet super-soldier Omega Red.

Marvel's Wolverine will be released for PlayStation 5 on Sept. 15.

Watch God Of War Laufey Star Smash The Last Of Us Golf Club Prop On Her First Day

Deborah Ann Woll plays Faye in the upcoming PS5 game God of War Laufey(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/god-of-war-laufey-gameplay-release-date-and-everything-we-know-so-far/), and she had quite a memorable first day on set. At San Diego Comic-Con recently, she shared a story about how, on her very first day, she broke a famous prop from The Last of Us due to her strength and tenacity--only she didn't know the significance at the time. And now, footage of the event has arrived. "Unbeknownst to me, this was a very famous prop that they had used on The Last of Us," she said, going on to joke that it was "some sort of sporting equipment." It was actually a golf club prop, and you probably know what that means... "They gave it to me and I was supposed to use it like an axe. And I broke it," Woll said. Game director Ariel Lawrence added, "She swung it so hard, it cracked. And it echoed throughout the volume. And we were like, 'Hot damn, let's go.'" https://twitter.com/SonySantaMonica/status/2088280064974635337 God of War: Laufey is in the works now for PS5, and it's arriving in February 2027(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/surprise-god-of-war-laufey-has-a-release-date-and-its-kratos-led-sequel-has-been-announced/). Starring alongside Woll is The Boys actor Jack Quaid, who plays a gelatinous cube named Phranque(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/god-of-war-laufeys-phranque-is-far-from-just-a-cube/). A new Kratos-led game(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/surprise-god-of-war-laufey-has-a-release-date-and-its-kratos-led-sequel-has-been-announced/) is coming after that, and it will pick up where Laufey left off(https://www.gamespot.com/articles/kratos-next-god-of-war-game-will-pick-up-where-laufey-leaves-off/).

Wolverine on the PS5 made me care about Marvel’s mutant for the first time

Going into my demo of Marvel's Wolverine, I mainly wanted to try out the game's very bloody combat. And it is delightfully bloody. But after two-ish hours of slashing and stabbing (and parrying!) enemies with Wolverine's claws, I left surprised - despite no previous attachment to the character, I was deeply endeared to Logan himself. &8230;
